CHRISTMAS IN WONDERLAND & HOGMANAY IN THE HIGHLANDS 2019/2020 PROGRAMME OF EVENTS We are looking forward to welcoming you to the Grant Arms Hotel for our Christmas & Hogmanay Break 2019 / 2020 Our Programme of Events commences on Monday 23rd December 2019 and ends after breakfast on Thursday 2nd January 2020. As with all stays at the Grant Arms Hotel, you are welcome to join in with as much or as little of the Programme as you wish—it’s your holiday and we want you to enjoy it in your own way. Dress code for the whole holiday is informal. The Programme offers activities both in the Hotel and out and about. If you intend to join in with any of the Guided Walks/Field Trips please remember to pack warm, waterproof clothing and stout footwear. Booking forms will be available for you to book on the programme activities. Some of the walks/trips may include walking up hills—this will be notified on the event details in the programme. Transport is not provided for any of the trips, but there may be the opportunity for car sharing with other guests. **Please note that ALL Guided Walks and Field Trips are weather dependent, as such, venues may be changed or trips cancelled as a last resort. The guide of each walk/trip will make a decision the evening before and post any updates on the notice board in Reception, please check for any updates before you leave. If you haven’t already informed us of any dietary requirements or if you require large-print menus, or have any mobility or medical issues that you think we should be aware of, please do let us know before you arrive. We have included a wine pre-order form for the evening Dinners and Christmas Day Lunch—we would be grateful if you could take the time to fill this in and give it to Reception upon arrival (additional sheets will be available if required). Throughout the break, there is a table for our single guests to help you get to know each other. The table is booked for 6pm on the day of arrival. Packed lunches are available to be booked for your days out at £8.50pp, however, if the packed lunch is instead of a Soup/Sandwich Lunch in the hotel, then it will be complimentary. Order forms can be picked up from Reception, and returned to Reception by late afternoon/early evening before the day you need it. Get to know your surroundings by taking a stroll through Grantown-on-Spey or simply relax in the Capercaillie Bar. 2pm–5pm AFTERNOON TEA will be served in the Capercaillie Bar. 3pm FILM: ELF (2003, Cert PG / 1hr 35 min). Will Ferrell stars as Buddy, a human being who has spent his whole life believing himself to be an elf. Brought up by Santa (Edward Asner) and his elves at the North Pole, Buddy has spent the last 30 years happily working in Santa’s toy workshop. But when his ungainly size starts to become a liability in the elf-sized working environment, Santa suggests that Buddy head to New York City to find his biological father (James Caan). Needless to say, the unlikely spectacle of a 6’5’ man dressed from head to foot in bright green stands out a mile on the streets of the Big Apple, and the good-natured Buddy finds himself in all sorts of scrapes as he gets used to his new family and surroundings—and they get used to him. The procession starts at the Craiglynne Hotel—meeting at 7pm for a 7.30pm start and will end in The Square in front of the hotel by approximately 8pm with carol singing and mince pies and fruit punch for sale. (To get to the Craiglynne for the start, turn left out of the Grant Arms and continue down high street for about 0.5 mile—the Craiglynne will be on your right opposite Grant Park at the end of the town) 8.30pm EVENING TALK: UGANDA—PEARL OF AFRICA BY ALAN DAVIES AND RUTH MILLER. In this talk Alan Davies and Ruth Miller from Birdwatching Trips, will talk about their recent trip to Uganda. With habitat ranging from papyrus swamps, high altitude forest, lowland forest, savannah grasslands, and the mighty River Nile, their trip took them to many of the wonderful bird-rich habitats and the impressive national parks of this beautiful country where they saw over 450 species of bird including Shoebill, Grey Crowned Crane and Great Blue Turaco, and over 35 mammal species including Gorillas and Chimpanzees. After breakfast join our guest speakers Alan Davies and Ruth Miller for walk around Loch Garten and Loch Mallachie to see some of our local and iconic wildlife. Take some seed to hand-feed the Coal Tits, other possible sightings at this time of year include Crested Tits, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Treecreeper, Wren, Robin, Siskin, Goldcrest, Crossbill, Red Squirrel, Roe Deer, Brambling and Woodcock in the woods, Goldeneye, Goosander, Heron, Mallard, Pink Footed Geese and Whooper Swans on the lochs. Meet in Reception at 9am and follow Alan & Ruth to the venue or meet at the Loch Garten Car Park by 9.30am. Seasonal, semi-improvised British comedy starring Martin Freeman and Ashley Jensen. Shabby, under-achieving primary school teacher Mr Maddens (Freeman) works at a school that competes annually with a local private school for the best production of the Christmas nativity play. Tired of always playing second fiddle to his arch-rival, Maddens idly concocts a white lie centred around his ex-girlfriend, Hollywood producer Jennifer (Jensen), in which he boasts that she is coming to see his play with a view to turning it into a film. What he omits to mention is that he and she have not spoken to one another for years. Now, with the expectations and burning ambitions of parents and pupils running high, can he possibly turn his elaborate fiction into reality in time to make everyone’s Christmas wishes come true? After lunch meet our guest speakers Alan Davies and Ruth Miller at Strathdearn (Findhorn Valley) to look for some of the raptors and other wildlife that can be found there. Potential sightings include raptors such as Buzzard, Golden and White-tailed Eagle, Goshawk, Hen Harrier, Kestrel, Merlin, Sparrowhawk, Peregrine and Red Kite, Crossbills, Dipper, Goosander, Red-breasted Merganser, Grey Heron, Pied and Grey Wagtail, Mistle and Song Thrush, Mountain and Brown Hare, Grey and Red-legged Partridge, Raven, Red Deer, Wild Goats, Red and Black Grouse, Red Squirrel, Lesser Redpoll and Woodcock, Redwing and Fieldfare. Meet at the car park at end of the road (BWWC Map Site 13) by 1pm (we may move around the area to find the best wildlife spots) 2pm GUIDED WALK AT MERKINCH WITH DAVE SLATER (approx. 1.5 hrs). After lunch, meet our local wildlife guide Dave Slater at Merkinch Local Nature Reserve. A little hidden gem of a reserve in Inverness on the edge of the Moray Firth, full of wildlife and walkways among a diverse set of habitats around several pools, which are partially connected to the sea. Habitats include salt marsh, freshwater marsh with reed beds, bog, scrub and wooded embankments. Wildlife that could be seen include Roe Deer, Herons, Cormorants, Sea Ducks, Divers and wading birds of various descriptions. Meet at the car parking area at the end of Kessock Road, Inverness IV3 8AJ by 2pm 2pm–5pm AFTERNOON TEA will be served in the Capercaillie Bar. 3pm FILM: NATIVITY 2 (2012, Cert U / 1 hr 26 mins). This Christmas, the unforgettable pupils of St. Bernadette s have set their hearts on competing in the National choir contest “A Song For Christmas”. But with the headmistress not in favour of the plan, new class teacher Mr Peterson (David Tennant) has his hands full trying to curb the enthusiasm of the kids, not to mention Mr Poppy (Marc Wootton). Ugly animals are often shunted to one side when it comes to natural history series as the cute, good-looking and highly cuddlable ones get all the air time. But Nigel is about to change all that as he seeks out the ugliest animals in the world. From wrinkled bats to naked mole rats and from ugly bugs to plump toads, we’ll find that appearances can be deceptive. Alternatively, join our local wildlife guide Dave Slater for a guided stroll from the Hotel around some of the paths in Anagach Woods looking for some of our local and iconic wildlife. When their new teacher Mr Shepherd (Martin Clunes) loses his memory and forgets all about Christmas, as well as his fiancée Sophie (Catherine Tate) and the whereabouts of the beloved Archie, it’s up to the pupils of St Bernadette’s to save the day. Led by the ever-enthusiastic Mr Poppy, they embark on a Christmas journey like never before—but time is against them if they are to help Mr Shepherd get to New York in time for his magical yuletide wedding. Alan Davies and Ruth Miller of Birdwatching Trips will focus on their home patch of North Wales for this talk. North Wales has so much to offer from high mountains down to stunning beaches and so many different habitats each with exciting birds to discover! CHRISTMAS IN WONDERLAND & HOGMANAY IN THE HIGHLANDS 2019/2020 PROGRAMME OF EVENTS THURSDAY 26th DECEMBER (BOXING DAY) 7am–10am ENJOY A FULL SCOTTISH BREAKFAST in the Restaurant. 10am FIELD TRIP TO CAIRNGORM AND GLENMORE WITH SIMON PAWSEY (approx. 2 hrs). Meet our local wildlife guide Simon Pawsey at Cairngorm. We will start off Black Grouse at the cairngorm viewpoint, and then move up to the Funicular Car Park. If time and weather permit, we may take a short walk up part of the trail. We will then move back down to Glenmore to have a short walk in the woods before Simon heads to the Reindeer Centre for the annual Boxing Day visit to see and feed the Cairngorm Reindeer. We will be on the lookout for Black Grouse, Mountain Hare, Ravens, Ptarmigan, Snow Bunting, Crossbills, Crested Tits, Raptors and any other birds and wildlife. Meet at the Cairngorm Viewpoint, Coire na Ciste Car Park (BWWC Map Ev end en Site 21) at 10am on /R tted Woodpecker 10am GUIDED WALK AROUND LOCH AN EILEIN WITH NIGEL MARVEN (approx. 2 hrs). After breakfast join our guest speaker Nigel Marven for a walk around the beautiful Loch an Eilein on the Rothiemurchus Spo reat Estate. This is easily the best screen version of the much-loved yuletide tale. The ever- versatile Alastair Sim is impeccable as the miser who comes to see the error of his ways through the promptings of the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Michael Hordern makes a splendid Jacob Marley and Mervyn Johns a humble Bob Cratchit, while George Cole does well as the younger, carefree Scrooge. Beautifully designed by Ralph Brinton and directed with unexpected finesse by Brian Desmond Hurst, this is not to be missed. CHRISTMAS IN WONDERLAND & HOGMANAY IN THE HIGHLANDS 2019/2020 PROGRAMME OF EVENTS 1pm FIELD TRIP TO INSH MARSHES WITH NIGEL MARVEN (approx. 2 hrs): After lunch, meet our guest speaker Nigel Marven at the RSPB Insh Marshes Reserve where he will take you around the 3 hides they have there and help you spot the wildlife that could potentially be seen at this time of year including overwintering Greylag Geese (look out for any rare visitors too), Whooper ng / Andrina Laid Swans, Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Teal, Wigeon, Roe Deer, Great mbli ler Bra Spotted Woodpecker, Robin, Siskin, Red Squirrel, Redwing, Fieldfare, Brambling, Lesser Redpoll, possible Waxwing and maybe Hen Harriers coming in to roost and the possibility of Merlin, Peregrine, Golden Eagle and White-tailed Eagle. Meet at BWWC Map Site 17 at 1pm 1pm CAIRNGORM REINDEER VISIT WITH SIMON PAWSEY. Time to meet our local wildlife guide Simon Pawsey at the Reindeer Centre for our annual eer / Jo Pen boxing day trip to see and feed the local Reindeer herd. Christmas isn’t the same without Morecambe and Wise and here we celebrate with three of their classic episodes with special guests Jack Jones, Vera Lynn, Bruce Forsyth, Andre Previn, Ian Carmichael and Glenda Jackson, John Hanson, Hannah Gordon, Vanessa Redgrave, Rudolph Nureyev, Laurence Olivier and The New Seekers, Diane Solomon, Brenda Arnau, Des O’Connor, Gordon Jackson and Diana Rigg.
