Program information Overview In 2022, the China Placement Program will be delivered in partnership with AustCham Shanghai (The Australian Chamber of Commerce Shanghai) to provide a unique experience for students to live and work in central Shanghai for six weeks during the winter vacation period, 20 June to 29 July 2022. The program is aimed at Chinese nationals. A Chinese passport and spoken and written Mandarin language skills are essential for this program. Students must be physically present in China in June 2022 to be eligible to participate in the program. It offers exciting opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students, providing a professional practical experience in Shanghai which complements coursework completed at University. Opportunities to develop professional networks through networking activities and events will be facilitated by AustCham Shanghai. The 6-week placement enables students to work and live within the central business districts of a major Chinese city while gaining valuable work experience and building peer and professional networks. Students will intern full-time for up to 40 hours per week in an internship while concurrently working on assignments from the University. The program’s design provides each student with a comprehensive academic, professional and cultural experience to position them well for a global career. Students will receive a total of 6 credit points towards their degree by successfully completing the relevant Business School unit of study and the work experience component. Units of study Students accepted into the program will be enrolled into BUSS2504/BUSS6506 China Placement Program, which is administered by the Business School. The unit requires students to complete their work placement in China, undertake preparatory coursework in reflective and professional practice, while concurrently completing associated coursework. Assessments will include critical reflection, set readings, compulsory online learning and workshops based on the placement experience. The China Placement Program is an elective unit of study. Upon successful completion of the program students will receive 6 elective credit points, which cannot count towards a major/specialisation. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have room in your degree to undertake this unit. It is also your responsibility to ensure that your study plans conform to the relevant degree and faculty resolutions that are applicable to you. Please make sure to read the student responsibilities statement on the Current Students website to ensure you understand those responsibilities. Please refer to the Business School Handbook for the requirements of your degree. Professional Host Organisations Students will be placed in either a public or private organisation for the duration of the six-week program. Although the roles and responsibilities will vary somewhat, the same core requirements are relevant to all placements: professionalism, integrity, strong oral and written communication, research skills, teamwork and leadership skills. AustCham Shanghai will be responsible for matching students to host organisations that have been approved by the Business School. In previous years, some of our host organisations have included EY, KPMG, Grant Thornton, Colliers, Hilti, Henkel and Zhonghua Certified Public Accountants LLP. AustCham and the Business School’s responsibility for placement sourcing and matching aims at ensuring the following: Please note program information contained in this flyer is subject to change 1
1. Meets appropriate WHS standards. 2. Student can undertake meaningful work experience that is most aligned (but not always guaranteed) to a student’s degree where/when available. 3. Students will receive adequate supervision. The China Placement Program aims to ensure students’ employability skills are developed and appropriate work experience is undertaken to meet the unit of study requirements. It is not an opportunity for a student to be placed with an organisation due to an organisation’s branding reputation alone, nor a student’s non-learning expectations. Who Should Apply? The China Placement Program (Shanghai) is open to Chinese nationals only. A Chinese passport and spoken and written Mandarin language skills are essential for this program. Students must be physically present in China in June 2022 to be eligible to participate in the program. Undergraduate students enrolled in a Business School degree (or combined Business School degree) are eligible to apply. Students must have completed a minimum of 48 credit points at the time of application. Postgraduate students enrolled in Master of Commerce, Master of Commerce (Extension), Master of Professional Accounting or Master of Human Resource Management & Industrial Relations are eligible to apply. Students must have completed a minimum of 24 credit points at the time of application. A minimum 60% WAM across the Business School units is required. Applicants are expected to be an outstanding ambassador for the Business School. Evidence of this will be demonstrated through academic and personal achievements. Applicants must have a minimum of 6 elective credit points available in their degree. Students are not able to exceed their degree requirements to participate in this program. Please note students can participate in only one Business School placement program during the course of their degree, ie Local Industry Placement Program, International Industry Placement Program or other related programs. Students will only be awarded a second placement opportunity in exceptional circumstances. In addition, students may also participate in a study tour/business practicum/project- based unit and/or the Self-Sourced Placement Program if their degree will accommodate them enrolling in more than one program. Please contact business.placements@sydney.edu.au if you require clarification. How To Apply The placement program application is a three-part process that consists of the following steps: 1. Apply for departmental permission in Sydney Student. 2. Complete an online application in Sonia Online. 3. Complete an online interview. Step 1: Departmental permission First, you will need to log in to Sydney Student and add the unit of study relevant to your placement (ie China). You should refer to the Sonia Online homepage for the unit of study you need to add. When you select the unit, you'll be prompted to apply for departmental permission so that it can be assessed whether you meet the eligibility criteria and if you have room in your degree. Please note program information contained in this flyer is subject to change 2
After you have applied for departmental permission, you can then proceed to Step 2 and complete the online application process. If you receive a notification that you have not met the course requirements for the unit of study, you are not eligible to participate in the program based on your current enrolment status and the associated degree progression information available in Sydney Student (eg degree, specialisations and elective space in your degree). Please do not proceed to Step 2 in the application process. As you are applying for an international placement program, you are required to attach a copy of your current passport identification page to your departmental permission application. Failure to do so will result in your application being rejected. Step 2: Online application You will need to lodge your application through Sonia Online by the application deadline. You can find instructions in the Sonia Online application user guide (pdf, 776KB). As part of your application you will be asked to include: • a copy of your resume. We recommend that you use this resume template (pdf, 125.8KB) when preparing your resume • a copy of your academic record printed from Sydney Student • an image of your current passport identification page. Your documents need to be submitted as a single Microsoft Word document, no larger than 12MB. Step 3: Online interview Once you have submitted an online application and applications have closed (10 March) you will receive email notification to complete an online interview on a system called Sonru. This will be sent to your university email account and you will have approximately two days to complete the interview. Before attempting the interview, please keep in mind the following: • you can use a desktop, laptop or mobile device • you will need good internet connection, a webcam and a microphone • you will have only 1 attempt at completing the online interview in Sonru, so we strongly recommend that you become familiar with the system beforehand and don’t leave your interview to the last minute. To help prepare for your online interview, you can access a range of resources on the Careers and Employability Office Canvas site. Your Industry Placement Program application is not complete until you have completed Steps 1, 2 and 3. Late applications will not be accepted. Applications will open at 9am (AEDT) on 21 February and close at 12pm midday (AEDT) on 10 March 2022. Closing date for online interviews is 11:59pm on Sunday, 13 March 2022 (AEDT). Please contact business.placements@sydney.edu.au if you have any questions regarding the application process. Please note program information contained in this flyer is subject to change 3

As students are not covered for medical related costs by the University of Sydney student travel insurance policy when visiting or staying in their country of residence, program participants are advised to purchase their own travel insurance policy for the duration of the program. Please refer to the Student Travel Insurance page for further information. We strongly advise that you do not confirm/pay for any domestic in-country travel until you have received official confirmation that you have been accepted into the program and your placement has been confirmed. Accommodation Due to the high cost of accommodation in Shanghai, risk policy and management requirements, the University will arrange twin-share accommodation for students. The cost of the accommodation will be significantly subsidised by the Business School through a reduction in the required program fee. All participating students are required to stay in the accommodation organised by the University. Student accommodation in Shanghai will be provided from Sunday, 19 June to Saturday, 30 July 2022. Students must check out from the accommodation on 30 July. Accommodation before or after these dates will have to be self-arranged and at student’s own expense. Further details on the accommodation will be available closer to the time. It is a mandatory requirement of the program that all students must stay in the accommodation provided with room allocation being at the discretion of the program unit of study coordinator. To meet the program’s risk protocols, students are not permitted to stay with family or friends or to otherwise arrange their own accommodation during their placements. Students must remain in Shanghai for the entire duration of the 6-week program and must not travel outside of Shanghai, or travel to any medium-high risk COVID-19 areas. Fees The China IPP fees consist of two components: 1. The subsidised program package fee is AUD$3,100 and includes the following: • partial accommodation costs • program briefing pack • placement sourcing and matching • in-country support and risk management 2. In addition, the BUSS2504/BUSS6506 unit of study tuition fee, which is the normal tuition fee associated with a unit of study at the Business School, will be charged through the normal University billing process, and is separate to the subsidised program fee. Additional costs not covered by the program fee or tuition fee: • Domestic in-country travel fares, in-country transport, food & incidentals, any additional accommodation requirements before and/or after the program, and any quarantine costs. The program package fee deposit of AUD$1000 is due by 9am (AEDT) on 31 March 2022. The balance of the program fee is due by 28 April 2022. The fees are to be paid in Australian dollars.
