Hello! Let me be the first to welcome you to this new academic year with the Student Academy of Audiology (SAA). Not only is it a brand new year, but the SAA Board of Directors is debuting our brand new look. With the implementation of our new board structure and the establishment of the President-Elect position, we hope that the SAA will continue to improve our ability to serve audiology students and to be essential in the lives of our membership. I am honored to be writing to you as the President of the SAA, especially given that SAA has been my professional home since I began my Au.D. Within weeks of starting my degree at Washington University in Saint Louis., I joined my local SAA chapter. I was surprised to learn that being a part of SAA not only meant participating in fundraisers and events, but also meant receiving mentorship from second and third year members. The next year I applied to volunteer with national SAA and was placed on the Programs Subcommittee! I collaborated with other members of the subcommittee and I also received support and mentorship from the subcommittee chair. Last year, I was elected to the national Board of Directors and served as the Undergraduate Committee Chair. After serving on the national SAA in various capacities, it was my turn to support and mentor other students. I had an opportunity to pay it forward by supporting other audiology students and I can’t wait to do it again! Of course, I loved every second of my interactions with students across the country. True to every single step of this journey, I did not operate independently and I was supported by fantastic mentors and peers along the way! What all this nostalgia amounts to is this: I did not get here alone. You may be a leader in your local chapter, a volunteer on a national SAA committee, or a student who recently learned about SAA for the first time. Whoever you are, you have something special to contribute, and wherever you are on your journey, this year, I encourage each of you to become more engaged with SAA and to empower other students along the way. Jeni Whittaker, SAA President Hello and welcome to national SAA! I am so excited that you have chosen to volunteer with SAA, whether in a local, state or national capacity. Our field is only as successful as the individuals dedicated to its success! I thank you for being that person and I’m excited to be a future colleague of yours. My name is Liz Marler and I am entering my third year at Purdue University. I am currently serving as the President-Elect of SAA! This structure is brand new to the national level and I’m excited to complete large projects and initiatives. As a leader, I thrive on information, ideas, opinions and data to make my decisions and I encourage you to contact me if you have any of these. My introduction to SAA started as a member of a local audiology organization at Purdue. After assisting with the establishment of an SAA chapter at Purdue, it became very clear why the SAA is so different. We are a network of students, all suffering through difficult courses, filling out fourth year applications and forgetting the masking formulas. We are all volunteers with graduate assistantships, family, and hobbies (ha) competing for our time. But we are also all future audiologists, concerned about the direction of our profession, and excited to contribute. This unique collection of voices has been extremely influential for my personal and professional life and I hope you can experience the same rewards. Welcome to another great year with the SAA and I look forward to serving you in the upcoming years. Liz Marler, SAA President-Elect 3

Student Academy of Audiology Overview Overview and Mission: The Student Academy of Audiology (SAA) is the national student division of the American Academy of Audiology (AAA) that serves as a collective voice for students and advances the rights, interests, and welfare of students pursuing careers in audiology. The SAA introduces students to lifelong involvement in activities that promote and advance the profession of audiology and provides services, information, education, representation, and advocacy for both the profession and consumers of audiology services. The SAA has over 2,000 members, consisting of students enrolled in AuD, PhD, post-baccalaureate, undergraduate, or other accredited audiology doctoral programs for a professional degree in audiology. Vision: To be essential in the lives of audiology students by equipping them with the knowledge to begin a patient-centered career that promotes the profession and advances research in audiology. History: The SAA was founded in 2009 after NAFDA (National Association of Future Doctors of Audiology) approached the AAA for support. Various professional healthcare organizations have affiliated student institutions, such as the American Medical Association-Medical Student Section (AMA-MSS), the American Psychological Association (APA), the American Dental Association (ADA), the American Nurses Association (ANA), and the American Veterinary Association (AVA). All have student sections that work together with the parent organization to achieve common goals. In October 2008, Dr. Brian Vesely, the former NAFDA President, and Dr. Patrick Feeney, the former AAA President, signed an agreement that merged NAFDA into the AAA’s student organization, the Student Academy of Audiology (SAA). The ultimate goal of the merger was to maintain an independent student voice, while maximizing the opportunities that come with joining the AAA. 5
Partnerships The SAA maintains a close relationship with both the Academy and its partners. Student liaisons on the SAA Board communicate with leadership in the following organizations: American Academy of Audiology Mission: The American Academy of Audiology promotes quality hearing and balance care by advancing the profession of audiology through leadership, advocacy, education, public awareness, and support of research. Vision: The American Academy of Audiology is to be essential in the professional lives of audiologists by advancing the science and practice of audiology, and achieving public recognition of audiologists as experts in hearing and balance. About: The American Academy of Audiology is the world's largest professional organization of, by, and for audiologists. The active membership of more than 12,000 is dedicated to providing quality hearing care services through professional development, education, research, and increased public awareness of hearing and balance disorders. Website: www.audiology.org American Academy of Audiology Foundation Mission: The American Academy of Audiology Foundation promotes philanthropy in support of research, education, and public awareness in audiology and hearing science. Vision: Support for advancements in hearing and balance that enhance the experiences of life. About: The Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Academy and is an Academy partner along with the American Board of Audiology (ABA), Accreditation Commission of Audiology Education (ACAE), and the SAA. The Foundation’s programs reach audiologists, audiology students, consumers, and those with hearing impairments. Our initiatives can be broadly categorized into one of three areas that correspond with our mission: research, education and public awareness. Website: www.audiologyfoundation.org American Board of Audiology Mission: The American Board of Audiology® (ABA), an autonomous organization, is dedicated to enhancing audiologic services to the public by promulgating universally recognized standards in professional practice. The ABA encourages audiologists to exceed these prescribed standards, thereby promoting a high level of professional development and ethical practice. Vision: ABA credential are earned by all leading audiologists, respected by other healthcare providers, and trusted by patients. About: Founded in 1999, the ABA works closely with expert practitioners across the globe to create universally recognized standards in professional audiology practice. The ABA encourages audiologists to exceed these prescribed standards, thereby promoting a high level of professional development and ethical practice. Website: www.boardofaudiology.org 6
Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education Mission: The mission of ACAE is to assure the public that only those programs that have complied with this agency’s standards and that graduate competent audiologists trained at the AuD level will be accredited. Purpose: The purpose of the ACAE accreditation is to recognize, reinforce and promote high quality performance in AuD educational programs through a rigorous verification process. This process will produce evidence that AuD programs have prepared graduates who are qualified to be doctoral-level audiologists. It also will assure communities of interest that graduates will be able to function according to the national scope of practice, as defined by the professional organization. Chapter Affiliation with the national SAA I. New Chapter Affiliation Application Process a. Policy. Local SAA chapters must be affiliated with national SAA. Multiple audiology organizations may have local chapters at the same university. Local chapters must follow all rules and regulations of their respective universities and programs. b. Procedure. Local chapters may apply for national SAA affiliation at any time. Chapters must complete and submit a chapter information form, a faculty advisor information form, chapter bylaws, affiliation agreement and, as needed, proof of their exempt status, D&O Insurance, and Liability Insurance. All forms are available at https://saa.audiology.org/ under “Become a Chapter”. No Academy or SAA dues are required for a chapter’s affiliation. A faculty advisor is required who is a member of AAA. c. Undergraduate Chapter. At institutions where a doctorate of audiology graduate program is not established and no SAA affiliate exists, a group of ten or more undergraduate associates may request to form a local chapter. Prospective chapters must complete the same application as new chapter affiliates, outlined above. d. Incentives. Chapters meeting the follow national membership benchmarks by January 1 will receive the following incentives: i. 75% membership - Eligible to apply for Humanitarian, Education, and Awareness Resources (HEAR) Chapter Grants (for more information, please see page 14) ii. 85% membership - Recognition in the SAAy Anything Newsletter and at the SAA Membership Meeting iii. 90% membership - Extra Chapter Challenges Point iv. 100% membership - Chapter Spotlight v. Chapters not holding at least 75% national membership will be contacted by their regional representative to see how the SAA can better serve their members and assist their chapter. II. Chapter Affiliation Renewal Process a. Chapters are required to renew their affiliation with national SAA annually. In addition, national SAA must be notified of changed contact information, as necessary. b. In order to maintain affiliation with national SAA, renewal documents must be submitted by January 1. i. For this academic year, renewal documentation will consist of updated contact information for the chapter president, vice president, and advisor at the beginning of the academic year and when your chapter board changes over (please see Chapter Contact/Information form on page 10). ii. In even years, renewal documentation will consist of chapter bylaws signed by both the chapter president and advisor, in addition to the documentation listed above. The SAA Board of Directors will carefully review all documentation and chapters will be notified of their completion of the renewal process no later than February 1. 8
III. Chapter Governance a. Information regarding chapter governance (e.g., membership composition, officers, finances, meetings, etc.) is detailed in the chapter’s bylaws, which are completed and submitted with the application for affiliation. A template for the bylaws is available here. b. Any changes to a chapter’s bylaws need to be submitted to Olivia DeWald (oliviadewald.saa@gmail.com), Chapter and Member Relations chair, and Rachael Sifuentes (rsifuentes@audiology.org), the SAA Liaison, for approval. c. Logo and Letterhead Use. The SAA logo is a registered trademark owned by the Academy. The logo and letterhead design and format may not be altered in any way. Any and all usage of the logo, for letters or other purposes, or letterhead, must have prior approval by SAA Liaison, Rachael Sifuentes, and the Academy, to ensure appropriateness and professionalism. IV. Tax Exempt Status for Chapters a. It is recommended that chapters review the financial policies of the university under which they are housed. In most cases, student run organizations may qualify for tax- exempt status through their university. b. Chapters interested in obtaining tax-exempt status on their own must make their own individual request to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for a separate review by the IRS of their particular operations. c. There may also be particular state and local requirements that may have to be taken into consideration by the applicant and coordinated with the IRS application when tax-exempt status is sought. d. The tax-exempt 501(c)(6) status of the Academy/SAA is particular to it and may not be used as any type of "umbrella" under which chapters conduct tax-exempt activities. In the event there are any questions about this issue, please contact the Academy for further information. 9
Chapter Contact/Information Form The Chapter Contact/Information Form gives the national SAA information on who your chapter’s main points of contact are and how we can reach them. It is important we keep this information as up to date as possible. Anytime your chapter holds an election or an officer is changed, we ask your chapter to submit a new Chapter Contact Information Form. Once completed, please email to both: • Olivia DeWald, Chapter and Member Relations Committee Chair (oliviadewald.saa@gmail.com) • Rachael Sifuentes, Associate Director of SAA and Volunteer Engagement (rsifuentes@audiology.org) 10

Chapter Activities with the national SAA Ask Me About Audiology Campaign (AMAA) In celebration of October being National Audiology Awareness Month (NAAM) and October 28 being National Make a Difference Day, we’re challenging you to advocate for audiology by participating in our Ask Me About Audiology Campaign on Saturday, October 21, 2017 in YOUR local community. On the day of the AMAA Campaign, gather members of your local SAA Chapter, wear the color forest green, and get out into your local communities. Some great areas to target are town centers, local parks, outdoor markets, county fairs, health fairs, sporting events, etc. Encourage members of the public to ask questions or share their own personal experiences with hearing loss. The overarching goal is to raise awareness for the profession of audiology and do so on both a united local and national level. Lastly, be sure to send pictures and/or reflections about your chapter's experiences participating in the event to the SAA Public Outreach Chair, Hanna Sawher, at hannasawher.saa@gmail.com. Auction4Audiology All SAA chapters are encouraged to participate in this annual fundraiser by donating an item to the silent auction. Proceeds from the items donated by SAA chapters go towards student scholarships and grants funded by the American Academy of Audiology Foundation. These scholarships and grants support students around the country by funding their research, academic, and clinical endeavors. High 5 for Foundation In honor of National Philanthropy Day, the SAA Fundraising Committee created the High-5 Fundraiser to support student initiatives. We are asking each SAA Chapter to find five supporters (anyone can participate) to each donate $5 to the American Academy of Audiology Foundation by from October 11 – November 11. We challenge each chapter to take pictures of their supporters to showcase your chapter’s participation on the SAA Facebook and Twitter. Let's work together to make the 2017 High-5 Fundraiser an amazing second year! National Day At Your State Capitol Day (NDAYSCD) Every year between January and May, state legislators convene in their corresponding state's capitol to participate in the process of lawmaking known as legislative sessions. During this time, members of the public are welcomed and encouraged to reserve space within their state's capitol to converse with their state legislators about issues that they are most passionate about and/or directly affect their quality of life, whether on a personal, professional, or global level. This is where YOU come in! The SAA Public Outreach committee is challenging you to take advocacy to the next level in your own state and allow your voice to be heard where it matters most - upon the ears of your state's legislators! We have provided training sessions, how-to documents, and many resources for your chapter on the SAA’s website. National Day At Your State Capitol Day will be held on April 6th, 2018 this year. 15
SAA Humanitarian Week Join the national SAA for the third year in celebrating the World Health Organization’s (WHO) annual World Hearing Day on March 3, 2018! World Hearing Day is held annually on March 3 after being introduced at the First International Conference on Prevention and Rehabilitation of Hearing Impairment in 2007. Each year, WHO and other international and local organizations carry out ear- and auditory perception-related activities and events to promote hearing health and care around the world. The SAA wants you to get involved and do your part to promote WHO’s initiative by hosting a humanitarian event in your community during the month of February! Special Olympics Healthy Hearing Special Olympics is the largest global public health organization dedicated to serving individuals with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics provides free health screenings and information to Special Olympics athletes at local, regional, and world games. One of the health screening programs provided by Special Olympics is called Special Olympics Healthy Hearing (SOHH), which provides free hearing screenings, education about hearing and hearing loss, and medical referrals. SAA members are encouraged to volunteer with SOHH by connecting with their Healthy Hearing Clinical Directors in their states. Click the header to find your respective local Special Olympics program. SOHH Supply Drive The national SAA is teaming up with SOHH for a special service project in order to gather some of the supplies needed to screen and care for the SOHH athletes in our first ever SOHH Supply Drive. Some of the supplies needed may include gloves, hand sanitizer, and hearing aid repair supplies. The supply drive will allow volunteers to screen and treat more athletes and provide SAA chapters with a meaningful service project. 16
