1 2 Letter from the founder and CEO of CWMUN Letter from the President of CWMUN Claudio Corbino Letizia Brichetto Arnaboldi Moratti Dear delegates, Dear delegates, First of all, I want to tell you that I am really happy to be able to give each one of you my most sincere welcome to the 7th edition of the CWMUN in New York. This year, I decided that my letter to you will start with a story that I would like to share with you. I am extremely delighted to welcome you to the 2018 edition of Change the World MUN. Your presence is an important signal of the effort undertook by young generations to build not only peaceful relations among countries and their different populations, but also to When I was a student, and I was your age, I dreamed that I could do something for others student and try to improve the way we study promote integration and discussion to face new social needs. and our commitment to the world: through this way Associazione Diplomatici was born. As a good Italian and Sicilian, the link with my land has always been deep, indissoluble, but at the same time, I have always felt the need The theme of this year’s Change the World MUN will be “The new routes to freedom - Social, Web, Human Rights, News and Education to discover something more, to look at the world through the lives of those who habit sharing their experiential baggage. But as you in the global world”. You will thus be asked to cooperate and present concrete proposals on freedom, one of the most delicate topics know, the curiosity and thirst for knowledge, until a few years ago, were not for everyone. in the current geo-political debate. In order to be able to travel the world and know its nuances, we needed facilities that not only were not available to those who wanted to use them, but for the vast majority of people, they were practically non-existent. You delegates, are in New York City today. As history showed us various times, freedom is not achieved once and forever, but it often needs to be defended and renewed to This is the time in which making a plane ticket just takes just one click. Do you have any idea of how immensely extraordinary this is? preserve it when circumstances change. The first article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” Dear guys, you are the fortunate children of the digital revolution, which has turned boundaries into networks, has broken down the walls and helped creating your own generation, which is fluid and sees in the international dimension of study and work, not a new Freedom and equality are two values associated with democracy: the one cannot be without the other, and both must be protected emigration season, but simply the possibility of having the best for itself, anywhere in the world. with the rule of law. Mobility is no longer the exception, but the rule. Going away is no longer, or no longer alone, a choice of life, but also a natural aspiration to make the global dimension to which you are used to think since your birth concrete. Of course, the theme of necessity still exists Unfortunately, these values are not universally recognized and protected across the globe. Even where they are though, not always in many countries, where starting to hope to find a job more easily, to look for a new opportunity, seems like a chimera. Honestly, I equality in rights results in actual equality. Granting each person equal access to work, healthcare, economic resources, energy and think that this concept is now obsolete, outdated. GUEST OF HONOR President Clinton Founder and Chairman of the Board, Clinton Foundation 42nd President of the United States William Jefferson Clinton, the first Democratic president in six decades to be elected twice, led the United States to the longest economic expansion in American history, including the creation of more than 22 million jobs. After leaving the White House, President Clinton established the Clinton Foundation in order to continue working on the causes he cared about. Since its founding, the Foundation has endeavored to help build more resilient communities by developing and implementing programs that improve people’s health, strengthen local economies, and protect the environment. The Foundation is guided by the belief that every problem has a solution and together with a diverse set of partners, works to improve lives around the globe and across the United States through a wide range of initiatives, including the now independent Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), which has helped over 11 million people in more than 70 countries access critical HIV/AIDS medications at CHAI-negotiated prices. The Clinton Climate Initiative, the Clinton Development Initiative, and the Clinton Giustra Enterprise Partnership are applying a business-oriented approach to promote sustai- nable economic growth and fight climate change in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Caribbean. In the United States, the Foundation is focused on helping children and adults live full and active lives by working to combat the rise in childhood obesity through the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a partnership forged with the American Heart Association; reduce health disparities and address emer- ging health threats like the opioid epidemic by partnering with local communities through the Clinton Health Matters Initiative; and increase awareness about the importance of early childhood develop- ment through the Foundation’s Too Small to Fail initiative. The Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock remains the heart and soul of the Clinton Foundation, and since it opened its doors in 2004, the Clinton Center has hosted hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, catalyzing $3.3 billion in economic impact throughout the community. Today, the Clinton Center also cooperatively manages the Presidential Leadership Scholars Program—a joint effort between the George W. Bush Presidential Center, the George Bush Presidential Library Foundation, and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation that seeks to equip emerging leaders with the tools they need to drive positive change in their communities. Above all, President Clinton has always believed that we can do more together than any of us can do on our own. In 2005, he founded the Clinton Global Initiative to foster partnerships among govern- ments, businesses, nongovernmental organizations and private citizens to turn good ideas into mea- surable results. To date, over 3,600 CGI commitments have already improved the lives of more than 435 million people in more than 180 countries. CGI’s work continues through these ongoing commit- ments and through the Clinton Global Initiative University which this year, celebrates 10 years of bringing together college and university students from every corner of the globe to turn good ideas into action. In addition to his continuing roles with the Foundation and CHAI, President Clinton has joined with other former Presidents to support relief efforts for communities recovering from natural disasters—partnering with President George H.W. Bush three times to organize aid and support for those affected by the 2004 tsunami in South Asia, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and Hurricane Ike in 2008, and with President George W. Bush in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti to raise money and assistance for communities devastated by the storm. To this day, the Clinton Foundation continues to support economic growth, job creation and sustainability in communities across Haiti. President Clinton was born on August 19, 1946, in Hope, Arkansas. He and his wife Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton have one daughter, Chelsea; two grandchildren, and live in Chappaqua, New York.
