Celebrating Denefield I hope you are all good and well, and enjoying the sunshine. Once again I am delighted with how our students have returned after the Easter break, and how focused and motivated they are. I led this week’s assemblies, and reflected upon some of the events over the holidays – the meaning of Easter itself, the passing of Prince Philip and the significance of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, and the touching story of the runner who helped the autistic child, which can be found here. The theme of these assemblies was constant and continual kindness, and I have set our students three kindness challenges: to greet staff and return staff greetings, to hold doors open, and to notice other people’s kindness, focusing on saying please and thank you. These small but important things have such a positive impact on the happiness of all of us. From September 2021, the school will have a new website, and a new logo. After consulting with staff, students, and parents/carers (via the parents’ forum), the school’s trustees have opted for the kite as the school’s emblem. The kite mirrors perfectly the school’s strapline of Success for Life, and our encouragement to all students to soar. The new logo will go on the school uniform and PE kit. All other aspects of the uniform and PE kit will remain the same. I do appreciate that not all parents/carers will want to or can afford to change the uniform over for September 2021. As a result, students can wear the uniform with either the old or the new logo until September 2022, and can wear PE tops with either the old or the new logo until September 2023. Finally, I would like to thank all parents/carers for the support they show the school. Like many schools and other public bodies, we have a code of conduct for parents, carers and visitors. It can be found here. I wish you and your households an enjoyable weekend. Mr E Towill MA (Oxon), Headteacher Included in this edition... Celebrating our Houses… On the final day of the spring term, each of our four house teams, Langley, Sulham, Kentwood and Norcot celebrated the achievements of individual students within their houses. Each Head of House conducted a virtual celebration assembly, ably supported by their ‘roaming reporters’ (Deputy Heads of Houses and Student Managers) to ensure that the hard work of students was recognised. It was fantastic to see all of the tutor groups, in all houses in such positive spirits and this was echoed across the classrooms and corridors of the school as students’ celebrated the achievements of their peers. There was a fantastic atmosphere around the school, with a healthy dose of competition amongst tutor groups and between houses. Well done to everyone involved for their collective efforts in making the assemblies such a fantastic success and well done to all of the award winners. All of the students should be thoroughly commended for their ‘can do’ attitude. House Point Trophy Throughout the year, all of the achievement points received by students are collected and houses battle it out to be the proud winners of the house point trophy in July. Celebrating our curriculum… This edition’s subject area is… We’re busy, busy, busy in art right now, and the department is a hive of activity! It’s great to see all of our students back from the Easter break. At the moment, Year 7 are finishing off their Indian Kite designs and beginning a new clay project based on Australian Indigenous art. Year 8 are finishing off a drawing project based on Michael Craig Martin, Year 9 are making lovely clay sculpture busts, while Year 10 and Year 12 are developing ideas for, and working on final outcomes. Our wonderful Year 11 and Year 13 students are all working very hard to complete their coursework portfolios in time for marking, just before half term in May. Students are working in their sketch books, making sure drawings, experiments, artist research pages, compositional ideas, and final outcomes are completed in time. Or deadlines are 19 May for GCSE and 20 May for A level. This year we have some very exciting outcomes, including a life size version of Saint Sebastian, some fantastic portraits, and some lovely sculptural pieces made from plaster and resin.
Celebrating our curriculum… Year 10 Architecture Club Calling all budding architects in Year10… Mr Nicholls will be running an afterschool architecture club for Year 10 students after May half term in the Art and Design Technology departments. During the sessions we will be working on a national schools architecture project, run by the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects). The RIBA have chosen eight secondary schools across the country to take part in the project, and we will be representing the South West of England. During the project we will be reviewing RIBA books and publications, and will be designing a futuristic housing estate, including front elevations, and urban planning layouts. There will be opportunities to discuss ideas with practicing architects (virtually), and we aim to visit a major architects practice in London or Birmingham in the Autumn (COVID permitting). All interested Year 10 students should see Mr Nicholls before half term to express an interest. We will require 12 students for the project.

Other news… ‘Healthy Active Me’ with Get Berkshire Active Get Berkshire Active - Our Mission is to get more people more active in Berkshire. The aim is to encourage more involvement by all sections of society in sport and physical activity thereby enhancing personal health and wellbeing and in turn reducing costs to public health and the health service by promoting active lifestyles that result in fewer avoidable health conditions. ‘Before the pandemic 2.2 million children in England were living in households affected by any of the so-called 'toxic trio' of family issues: domestic abuse, parental drug and/or alcohol dependency, and severe parental mental health issues. These numbers are likely to have swelled, fuelled by families locked down in close quarters for weeks and months, and an emerging economic crisis adding pressures on family finances.’ – In the Time of Covid 2020 Children Commissioner Childhood report Get Berkshire Active are a physical activity charity and the Active Partnership for Berkshire. We are best placed to provide the support because of the wide range of strategic partners that we work with and extensive networks that we have. What is Healthy Active Me and it’s three strands? Healthy Active Me is a programme with three elements that will target the most disadvantaged young people and families in Berkshire and will act as a catalyst for increasing physical activity levels. It will: • provide physical activity kit bags for our most disadvantaged children and families • deliver Fit, Fed and Read Camps during the school holidays • provide access to Sport and Physical activity sessions to most disadvantaged children and families at a reduced cost. Impact: As a result of Healthy Active Me, physical activity rates for young people will rise in our target areas. This will lead to significant physical benefits for the young people involved including: • increased energy levels • improved sleep • improved strength, balance movement, motor skills • this in turn can help to maintain a healthy weight for young people. It is also likely to result in: • a reduction in anti–social behaviour by providing diversionary activity • young people abiding by rules outside the sports environment after encountering rules during sessions • developing positive attributes of self-restraint, tenacity, hard work and team-working • developing friendships with peers who have positive values which will strengthen the young person’s own beliefs and attitudes • increased self-esteem and self-worth of participants • happier and more resilient young people • improved mental wellbeing.
