A Letter from Chris Sherwood, Chief Executive Designate RSPCA Thank you for your interest in the role of Director of Income Generation. It’s a wonderful chance to play your part in an organisation that holds a very special place in the heart of all those concerned with animal welfare. The RSPCA has delivered its valuable work for nearly 200 unbroken years. From our humble beginnings in 1824, we are now a very significant national organisation. We have a staff of nearly 1700, 8000 volunteers, 160 affiliated branches across England and Wales, a turnover of around £140m and assets of over £200m. Most importantly, we investigate nearly 150,000 cases of alleged animal cruelty every year, giving thousands of animals that need us most a second chance. The Society has an ambitious strategy that seeks to place information, education and prevention at the heart of what we do. We are transforming how we provide services so we can do even more for animals and people. And we are modernising our organisation to make us as efficient and effective as possible. It’s an exciting time to be part of the oldest, largest and most influential animal welfare organisation in the world. This work all needs capable and purposeful management, ensuring that we balance the challenge of what must be done today, with what we need to do to sustain our mission for another century and more. We want to hear from people who have the right mix of organisational, commercial and strategic skills to make a significant contribution to the life of the RSPCA, and who can also engage effectively with the wonderful people who volunteer, work and advocate for our mission. If you are a highly talented, ambitious and innovative fundraising leader, passionate about supporting animal welfare and hungry for your next leadership challenge, we would love to hear from you. You will need energy, determination and resilience to make your career at the RSPCA thrive. In return, I will offer my personal commitment to support your journey at every step. Together, we’ll continue to build a world that’s kinder to animals. To discuss this role further, please get in touch with Anton Packheiser on +44 (0) 7749 858 597 or Suzie Spooner on +44 (0) 7960 932 315. They will be delighted to hear from you. Best wishes, Chris Sherwood Chief Executive Designate (from 1 August 2018). 3
RSPCA – Past, Present & Future The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is the oldest animal welfare charity in the world, and the largest in the UK. Our founders include William Wilberforce; and while he is more widely known for his part in the abolition of slavery, Wilberforce’s involvement in the establishment of the (then) SPCA illustrates the strong connection in our founders’ minds between all types of cruelty, and the common need to end them. Today, the RSPCA is a major organisation, turning over more than £140m per annum and operating through two complementary and affiliated structures – the national organisation, and our 160 local branches. Branches and the National Society work closely together to advocate, raise funds and undertake practical operations to alleviate the suffering of animals. We undertake some of the most difficult and controversial work in animal welfare, but we believe that it’s vital that someone stands up to be counted. Our strategic aim is to decrease the need for our intervention, by influencing people to change the way they behave towards animals – thus reducing demand. Sometimes, the most effective approach to eliminating cruelty is not always obvious, or easy for people to understand, and we are committed to supporting our Inspectorate as it continues to make these challenging and complex decisions. So, what does the future hold? We believe that our organisation has singular capacity and reach, and enormous potential to continue extending its impact and mission. Our mid-term strategy identifies four key strands of work which we agree are critical to maintaining our relevance and momentum in society. 4
