Campaign Coordinator – Centenary Action Group

                   July 2019
Candidate Brief Campaign Coordinator - Centenary Action Group - July 2019
Dear Candidate,

Thanks for your interest in applying for this role. It is a really exciting opportunity to work
with around 100 leading women’s rights organisations, activists and political parties to
ensure the Suffrage Centenary delivers real change for women in the UK and globally.
Coordinating the Centenary Action Group, CAG, you will facilitate the communication
between members for greater women’s political participation, and ending the barriers of
violence and intimidation and economic inequalities.

Established by Helen Pankhurst and CARE International UK, the campaign group have come
together to say that even though some women got the vote in 1918 and equal franchise was
legislated in 1928, we are #StillMarching in the UK and around the world for women’s right
to take part in the decisions that affect their lives free from harassment and abuse. See
website https://www.centenaryaction.org.uk CAG includes Electoral Reform Society,
Fawcett Society, Muslim Women’s Network, Women for Refugee Women, WeAreTheCity,
Glitch, Girl Guides, Women’s Institute, 50:50 Parliament, The Jo Cox Foundation,
Women2Win, Labour Women’s Network, Green Party, Women’s Equality Party, Oxfam,
Action Aid, Womankind Worldwide and many, many more.

The UK Parliament currently ranks 39th in the world for women’s representation with only
32% of MPs being Women. Those women who do come forward, in the UK and globally,
face many difficulties. A global study carried out by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 2016
found 82% of female MPs worldwide had experienced some form of psychological violence.
Among them, some 44% said they had received threats of death, rape, beatings or
abduction during their parliamentary terms. Online abuse in the UK disproportionately
affects Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) women MPs. The suffrage centenary is an
opportunity to change this, and to increase women’s political participation and address
barriers to women’s leadership by securing concrete policy changes when it comes to
achieving gender justice at home and abroad. The Centenary Action Group wants to mark
the period from 2018 centenary of the first women’s votes in the UK to 2028, centenary of
equal franchise, as a decade for change.

This role of Coordinator will be hosted at CARE on behalf of the Centenary Action Group.
CARE International is one of the world’s leading humanitarian and development charities.
We fight poverty and injustice in the world’s most vulnerable places. We save lives in
disasters and conflicts. We stand with women, girls and their communities to achieve lasting
change for a better future.

If you are a passionate and experienced campaigner for women’s rights and want to deliver
real change for women, we want to hear from you!

for CARE’s poverty-fighting work.

As well as supporting CARE’s humanitarian and development work around the world, CARE
International UK provides specific expertise in the areas of women’s economic
empowerment, inclusive governance, humanitarian response (particularly shelter, and
gender in emergencies), and engaging with the private sector. We also play a key role in
CARE’s work engaging with and influencing policy-makers and decision-makers to tackle the
structural causes of poverty and social injustice.

CARE’s programmes are implemented through CARE country offices which are supported
with technical assistance and programme management by CARE members (including CARE
International UK). We work in partnership with local organisations to deliver many of our
programmes.

CARE is non-religious and non-political, allowing us to deliver humanitarian and
development assistance to anyone in need regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, age,

2. Job Summary

CARE International and Helen Pankhurst (Great Grand-daughter of Emmeline) have
convened a Centenary Action Group (CAG) in order to maximise opportunities to deliver a
lasting legacy for women’s rights from the 2018 Suffrage Centenary. This post will be the
Campaign Coordinator for the group, working with key stakeholders within the CAG
members to deliver policy change and tangible results.

                                                                                              4
CAG currently numbers over 100 individuals representing a range of UK and international
organisations. In addition to numerous individual discussions, the group as a whole meets
monthly, and is overseen by a steering group which meets quarterly with extra calls as
required.

Given the Suffrage anniversary theme, getting more women engaged and into politics is the
primary focus and this is the umbrella which the joint campaign sits under. There are
currently three sub-groups taking up particular angles on political life, one looking at political,
another on violence and a third on economic barriers.

The campaign recognises that disadvantage is intersectional and male dominance of politics
is structural, and that the barriers to women being present and active in politics have global
relevance - our policy responses and alliances need to also join the national and
international.
