Canadian Census Boundary Products Overview Canadian Census Boundary products depict census information, current as of the most recent census year, 2016. Source data was provided by TomTom, with further file improvements made by Precisely. Data Vintage Data vintage is a reference to the currency of data. It may not correspond exactly to the time of product release because of production time. Our data vintage reference style depicts the vintage of source data in unambiguous terms. All product media, product documentation, and product metadata now prominently display data vintage as YYYY.MM (Month Year), where YYYY represents the year and MM is the two-digit representation of the month. Example: 2017.09 (September 2017) File Naming Convention Canadian Census Boundary products use the following file naming standard: Geographic Coverage + Base Year + Data Layer + Data Vintage.filetype Geographic Coverage is the abbreviated name of the geographic entity that forms the boundary layer. Possible values are CN for nationwide coverage or individual province abbreviations. A complete list of province/territory abbreviations is found in Provinces and Territories > Province/Territory Codes. Base Year is Statistics Canada’s census base year. Data Layer is the two-letter abbreviation for the data layer provided in the file, using the following abbreviation: Data Layer Abbreviation Data Layer Name AD Aggregate Dissemination Area DA Dissemination Area CD Census Division CM Census Metropolitan Area CN Canada CS Census Subdivision CT Census Tract PR Province/Territory Canadian Census Boundary Products Product Guide 3
Example: cn16da2018_12.TAB is the file name for a national dataset of Dissemination Areas, base year 2016, December 2018 data vintage. File format is MapInfo TAB in this example. Specifications The following specifications apply to all Canadian Census Boundary products mentioned in this document: Coverage Area National Geographic Availability National Reference Date 2016 • TomTom Sources • Statistics Canada • Precisely • MapInfo TAB File Formats • Shape (SHP) • Well Known Text (WKT) Update Frequency See below Canadian Census Boundary data is updated quarterly in order to align boundaries with the latest street products from TomTom. Census year updates are updated every five years. Boundary files are updated once they become available from TomTom. Enhancements from TomTom are also included in StreetPro Canada. Methodology Dissemination area boundaries are merged into the product with each new census and enhanced/aligned to fit TomTom’s Canadian street network, using both automated and manual processes. Canadian Census Boundary products are enhanced with each quarterly release of StreetPro Canada. These enhancements include, but are not limited to, using imagery to align boundaries to the street network and detailed shorelining. Census boundaries are also used to provide hierarchy links in various other products. Boundary files supplied by TomTom are further enhanced by adding selected water features (specifically large, internal, shoreline-defining bodies of water) from StreetPro Canada. Canadian Census Boundary Products Product Guide 4
Notes The Dissemination Area boundary file is released using latitude/longitude coordinates. The default datum is NAD83, using the GRS80 spheroid. Most user-defined datums are supported and available on request. The practice of using a “point-to-poly” to convert products created based on 2011 census geography to 2016 geography is not recommended. Document Conventions The following conventions are used throughout this document: Text Style Significance Underlined Emphasis Document or chapter titles, or references Italics to specific text Bold Field or file name references in text Underlined bold Commands or actions Typewriter font, shaded Keyboard input or screen output background Field Names in Schema Tables Field names in schema tables are documented in upper-case letters. The appearance of field names in the actual product may differ from this convention. Canadian Census Boundary Products Product Guide 5

3 Census Metropolitan Areas/Census Agglomerations In this section Description Specifications Table Structure 100 Canadian Census Boundary Products Product Guide 8
Description The Census Metropolitan Areas/Census Agglomerations boundary file is a geographic polygon representation of the boundaries of Canada’s Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs) and Census Agglomerations (CAs). Census Metropolitan Areas are very large urban areas with populations of 100,000 or greater in the previous census. CMAs will retain their designation even if the population of the core area decreases below 100,000. Census Agglomerations are smaller areas with cores having a population of between 10,000 and 100,000 in the previous census. Census Metropolitan Areas and Census Agglomerations are defined by Statistics Canada and do not constitute political geographies. CMAs and CAs do not cover the entire land mass of Canada. The one CMA (Ottawa-Gatineau) and 3 CAs (Cambellton, Hawkesbury, and Lloydminster) that cross provincial boundaries are each represented by a single polygon record in this boundary file. Specifications The Census Metropolitan Area/Census Agglomeration boundary file contains a total of 152 records – 35 CMAs and 117 CAs. For a complete list of these areas, please see Appendix A – Census Metropolitan Areas/Census Agglomerations by Name. 4 Census Divisions In this section Description Specifications Table Structure 100 Canadian Census Boundary Products Product Guide 010 10
Description The Census Division boundary file is a geographic polygon file depicting the boundaries for Canada’s Census Divisions (CDs). Census Divisions are geographic areas at the level between provinces/territories and Census Subdivisions. Where provincial law does not designate Census Divisions, Statistics Canada, in cooperation with those provinces, has created Census Divisions for statistical purpose. Census Divisions are identified by a unique code consisting of a two-digit province/territory code and a 2-digit Census Division code. Specifications The Census Divisions table contains 293 records. 5 Aggregate Dissemination Areas In this section Description Specifications Table Structure 100 Canadian Census Boundary Products Product Guide 010 12
Description The Aggregate Dissemination Area boundary file is a geographic polygon file of the boundaries for Canada’s Aggregate Dissemination Areas (ADAs). Aggregate Dissemination Areas are a new census geography created for the 2016 Census. ADAs cover all of Canada and are formed from Census Tracts, Census Subdivisions, or Dissemination Areas. Aggregate Dissemination Areas have a population of between 5,000 and 15,000 and are intended to ensure the availability of census data. Within CMAs/CAs, adjacent Census Tracts are grouped together to meet ADA population criteria. In areas without tracts, Census Dissemination Areas (with less than 15,000 population) are grouped together to meet ADA population criteria; otherwise Dissemination Areas (in Census Subdivisions having a population greater than 15,000) are grouped together. Indian Reserves and a small number of other areas where door-to-door canvassing occurred form their own individual ADAs. ADAs are identified by a by an eight-character code consisting of a 2-character province/territory code and a 4-character ADA identifier. Specifications The Aggregate Dissemination Area table contains 5,386 records. 6 Census Subdivisions In this section Description Specifications Table Structure 100 Canadian Census Boundary Products Product Guide 010 14
Description The Census Subdivision boundary file is a geographic polygon file representing the boundaries of Canada’s census subdivisions. Census Subdivisions represent municipal political boundaries (cities, towns, villages, townships, and Indian Reserves) within provincial or territorial census divisions. They must have a high degree of economic and social integration with their core and a population of at least 50,000. Each Census Subdivision is identified by a unique code consisting of a two-character province/territory code, a 2- character Census Division code, and a 3-character Census Subdivision code. Specifications The Census Subdivisions table contains 5,162 records. 7 Census Tracts In this section Description Specifications Table Structure 100 Canadian Census Boundary Products Product Guide 010 16
Description Census Tracts (CTs) are small, urban or rural, neighborhood-like communities nested within Census Metropolitan Areas or Census Agglomerations. Population in Census Tracts ranges from 2,500 to 10,000, with a preferred average population of 5,000 (except for CTs in business districts). When Census Tracts are delineated, Census Canada makes every effort to ensure that the population is as homogenous as possible. Census Tracts are identified by a ten-character code consisting of a CMA/CA code, and a 7-character numeric code that includes leading zeroes, decimal point, and trailing zeroes. Specifications The Census Tract boundary table contains 5,721 records. Census Tracts are available for 49 major markets in Canada. Census Tracts do not cover all of Canada’s land mass. The program exists in all of Canada’s 35 CMAs and 14 of its 117 CAs: Census Tracts in Census Agglomerations Fredericton, NB Sault Ste. 8 Dissemination Areas In this section Description Specifications Table Structure 100 Canadian Census Boundary Products Product Guide 010 19
Description The Dissemination Area boundary file is a geographic polygon file depicting Canada’s 56,590 Census Dissemination Areas (DAs). Dissemination Areas are the smallest standard geographic unit for which census data is collected and are composed of one or more neighboring blocks with a target population of 400-700 people. Dissemination Areas follow road features to create the block while also respecting the boundaries of all Census Subdivisions and Census Tracts. All other levels of geography (provinces/territories, census divisions, census subdivisions, census metropolitan areas/census agglomerations, census tracts, and aggregate dissemination areas) are rollups of Dissemination Areas. The identification code for Dissemination Areas consists of a two-letter provincial abbreviation, a 2- character Census Division (CD) code, and a 4-character Dissemination Area code.
