Dear Parents/Carers, During our school week, every pupil participates in two hours of Physical Education. Led by PE specialists and/or class teachers these activities normally include a range of sports, games and physical activities. It is challenging to recreate this in a home setting, but the activities in this booklet aim to give our pupils the opportunity to take part in a variety of PE experiences, encouraging them to keep active and explore different areas of PE and sport at this difficult time. The grid below is a suggestion of activities your child may be able to take part in during their time of home learning but please also consider different ways of keeping active and fit in your home. Each home setting possesses different physical opportunities for children whether it is a basketball net in the driveway, nearby cycle path, football goal in the back garden, access to a green, etc. These areas can be utilised during these times but please consider the information from the Scottish Government on use of public places before attempting to use outdoor spaces. Please remember this is only a guideline! Best Wishes, PE Specialist 3

PE Home Learning Activities Further Information & Guidance for Parents /Carers Morning Work Out (E&O – HWB 0-28a PE SAL – Stamina) Join Joe ‘The Body Coach’ Wicks every school day to keep fit and active. Joe says ‘I am holding LIVE PE lessons at 9am Monday to Friday on my YouTube channel for children of all ages. Parents are going to be under pressure next week and for 30 minutes a day I can take over and inspire and energise the kids to get active, bounce around and have fun.’ Sessions available at www.youtube.com/user/thebodycoach1 Ball Toss (E&O – HWB 0-21a PE SAL – Decision Making) A simple activity to set up and using objects and items that you have in your house. Targets could be from a variety of containers, pots, etc and your child has to aim and throw a ball, rolled up socks, etc into the target. Challenge your child further by adding numbers or sounds onto the targets that they must read when they score. Could the children keep a simple tally of your scores? Pupil Choice (E&O – HWB 0-25a PE SAL – Responsibility & Leadership) Each home setting provides different opportunities for PE activities. As part of their home learning, pupils are encouraged to plan and create games and training stations that challenge and consolidate their skills. This can include performing a range of shots towards a basketball hoop, timing a cycle around a pre-planned route or creating a skipping challenge in your back garden. Be creative and choose something that you want to do. Bounce (E&O – HWB 0-21a PE SAL – Gross & Fine Motor Skills) The skill of bouncing and catching a ball can be a challenge for children at early level. This activity encourages the pupils to select a challenge that suits their own abilities, whether it is a simple activity as bouncing, catching and counting their bounces, or to creating an obstacle course for them to dribble around. Pupils should enjoy the practice so let them choose the context and approach that interest them the most. PE in my school (E&O – HWB 0-24a PE SAL – Confidence & Self Esteem) What is your favourite activity in PE at school? Can you draw a picture of you playing it? How do you play it? Explain the rules to an adult so they know how to play it too! 5
Pirate Dance Adventure (E&O – HWB 0-21a PE SAL – Rhythm & Timing) Use the ‘Just Dance’ video to lead you through a series of dance moves to the ‘A Pirate You Shall Be’ song. Each successful move earns you points. Try to keep up with the pirates and practice to see if you can complete the dance without making mistakes – a BIG challenge! I would recommend watching the video first. ‘A Pirate You Shall Be’ for Just Dance can be found at www.youtube.com/watch?v=oe_HDfdmnaM Winning & Losing (E&O – HWB 0-23a PE SAL – Respect & Tolerance) The biggest challenge facing many pupils in a PE setting is coping with winning and losing games. Everybody would like to win but winners have the pressure of being thoughtful and not celebrating in a way that upsets their opponents. Pupils that lose have the difficult challenge of coping with the defeat but also the emotions that come with losing – not a pleasant feeling! These life skills are ones that must be taught and experienced by all pupils. This activity focuses on winning and losing by playing a range of board games (Snakes and Ladders, Monopoly, Ludo, etc) or card games (Top Trumps, Uno, Dobble, etc). Really what ever games you have at home. Can you be a good winner and a good loser? Create Shapes (E&O – HWB 0-21a PE SAL – Balance & Control) This balance game encourages children to be creative and think of different shapes, heights and difficulties of balances. When a number is chosen that number of body parts must support the balance. E.g. A 3 might be performed by using two hands and a foot as a balance base. Balances should be held for the count of three. Further challenges could include mirroring (with a partner) strong balances and holding balances for a longer count. Balloon Badminton (E&O – HWB 0-22a PE SAL – Gross & Fine Motor Skills) An easy and fun version of badminton. Use a balloon and allow as many touches as you need to get the balloon across a dividing line. In the past, I have used cushions or even just a length of ribbon on the floor to replace a net. Players hit the balloon back and forward to each other. Can you keep the balloon up? Change into a game competing against your partner. Junk Game Design (E&O – HWB 0-25a PE SAL – Creativity) This creative activity, encourages the pupils to design, build and play their own PE junk game. Encourage them to choose safe items from your recycling to create goals, targets, nets or whether they need to complete their game. Challenge them further by asking the rules of the game. Could you play the game with them? 6
Cosmic Kids Yoga (E&O – HWB 0-21a PE SAL – Flexibility) An introduction to yoga with the Cosmic Kids Yoga series. Each session tells a story alongside yoga stretches and movements. This one is called ‘Squish the Fish’. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhYtcadR9nw Daily Mile (E&O – HWB 0-25a PE SAL – Motivation) Continue with our Daily Mile activity at home by using nearby space in the garden or nearby green space. PE Home Learning Activities Further Information & Guidance for Parents Morning Work Out (E&O – HWB 1-25a PE SAL – Stamina) Join Joe ‘The Body Coach’ Wicks every school day to keep fit and active. Joe says ‘I am holding LIVE PE lessons at 9am Monday to Friday on my YouTube channel for children of all ages. Parents are going to be under pressure next week and for 30 minutes a day I can take over and inspire and energise the kids to get active, bounce around and have fun.’ Sessions available at www.youtube.com/user/thebodycoach1 Skittles (E&O – HWB 1-22a PE SAL – Decision Making) Create your own bowling alley with this simple game. Use plastic bottles (or something similar) and fill them with some water or rice / beads / lentils to weigh them down and create the skittles. Using a ball, try and knock them. Two balls per player and add your score together. Use your Math's skills to tally the scores together. Challenge yourself by putting different numbers on the skittles and create addition or multiplication sums by using the numbers you have knocked down. E.g. 3 and 5 were knocked down so 3 x 5 = ? Younger children could use addition. Pupil Choice (E&O – HWB 1-25a PE SAL – Responsibility & Leadership) Each home setting provides different opportunities for PE activities. Bounce (E&O – HWB 1-22a PE SAL – Gross & Fine Motor Skills) The skill of bouncing and catching a ball can be a challenge for children at first level. This activity encourages the pupils to select a challenge that suits their own abilities, whether it is a simple activity as bouncing, catching and counting their bounces, or to creating an obstacle course for them to dribble around. Pupils should enjoy the practice so let them choose the context and approach that interest them the most. A Self Portrait (E&O – HWB 1-24a PE SAL – Confidence & Self Esteem) Draw yourself playing your favourite sport. Sounds like an easy task, but the discussion of what PE skills, qualities and attributes required to play the sport are needed should hopefully encourage the pupils to think about how they could improve these skills themselves. E.g. if a pupil identifies that speed is important to be a rugby player – how could they improve their speed? Younger pupils will need an adult to scribe. 10
Dance Class (E&O – HWB 1-21a PE SAL – Rhythm & Timing) Use the ‘Just Dance’ video to lead you through a series of dance moves to the ‘Kung Fu Fighting’ song. Each successful moves earns you points. Try to keep up with the dancer and practice to see if you can complete the dance without making mistakes – a BIG challenge! I would recommend watching the video first. ‘Kung Fu Fighting’ for Just Dance can be found at www.youtube.com/watch?v=domGaQVg004 Winning & Losing (E&O – HWB 1-24a PE SAL – Respect & Tolerance) The biggest challenge facing many pupils in a PE setting is coping with winning and losing games. Really what ever games you have at home. Can you be a good winner and a good loser? French Disco (E&O – HWB 1-21a PE SAL – Coordination & Fluency) Another great video resource that can be located via Youtube, ‘5-a-day’ encourages movement and actions to music with a keep fit approach to its content. This activity blends PE skills with French vocabulary. A fun and active way to consolidate and learn some new French words and phrases. Find it at – www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVhfIgghOPw Keepy Ups (E&O – HWB 1-22a PE SAL – Gross & Fine Motor Skills) Using an item of your choice, can you perform keepy-ups by using different parts of your body? You may wish to just use your hands or feet but the rule is to keep the object from touching the ground. It doesn’t have to be a ball – lighter objects like balloons give you greater moving and thinking time. Keep your highest score before the object drops and even set yourself time challenges. Please make sure you have enough space to perform this activity safely. Junk Game Design (E&O – HWB 1-23a PE SAL – Creativity) This creative activity, encourages the pupils to design, build and play their own PE junk game. Encourage them to choose safe items from your recycling to create goals, targets, nets or whether they need to complete their game. Challenge them further by asking the rules of the game. Could you play the game with them? 11

The ‘home learning’ version can be adapted to suit your home and the boccia balls can be substituted for a range of items (balls of paper, rolled up socks, potatoes, etc). The rules on the link below are a rough guide but feel free to make your own. Using a marker in place of a ‘jack’ can be an easy way of playing. Be creative and choose something that you want to do. Learn to Juggle (E&O – HWB 2-21a PE SAL – Determination & Resilience) Learning a new skill during a PE lesson can sometimes be a daunting task. There are pressures of time and having your peers watching as you try something new. I wonder if it is easier to learn something new at home? Here is a challenge for our second level pupils – can they learn to juggle 2 or 3 balls (again socks, potatoes, hankies can be used) at one time? This teaching video from Youtube breaks the skills of juggling down to a step by step approach. Only hard work, determination and a positive growth mindset are going to make you successful. www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCt1bmSASCI 16
Sports Star Search (E&O – HWB 2-26a PE SAL – Respect & Tolerance) Who do you admire from the World of Sport? Why? What can they do that makes them someone that you look up to? All sports stars have undertaken a journey to develop their skills to reach the levels of high performance that we see. Using the internet, find out information about a sports star of your choice. Games Design (E&O – HWB 2-25a PE SAL – Creativity) Put yourself in the shoes (trainers!) of your PE teacher. What warm up game can you create for a class of your choice? The game could be on any theme you wish – tig (toilet tig, healthy hearts), instruction (Beans, Gears) or objects (Dodgeball, Cat & Mouse). If choosing a younger class, think about the skills they may have and how you would need to support them? If an older class, how could you challenge them? Take it one step further and consider a new invasion game for one of your classes. Yoga Introduction (E&O – HWB 2-21a PE SAL – Flexibility) An introduction to yoga with instructor Adriene. Second Level Experience and Outcomes (E’s & O’s) Physical education, physical activity and sport As I encounter new challenges and contexts for learning, I am encouraged and supported to demonstrate my ability to select, adapt and apply movement skills and strategies, creatively, accurately and with control. HWB 2-21a I practise, consolidate and refine my skills to improve my performance. I am developing and sustaining my levels of fitness. HWB 2-22a While working and learning with others, I improve my range of skills, demonstrate tactics and achieve identified goals. HWB 2-23a By reflecting on my own and others’ work and evaluating it against shared criteria, I can recognise improvement and achievement and use this to progress further. HWB 2-24a I am experiencing enjoyment and achievement on a daily basis by taking part in different kinds of energetic physical activities of my choosing, including sport and opportunities for outdoor learning, available at my place of learning and in the wider community. HWB 2-25a I have investigated the role of sport and the opportunities it may offer me. I am able to access opportunities for participation in sport and the development of my performance in my place of learning and beyond. HWB 2-26a I can explain why I need to be active on a daily basis to maintain good health and try to achieve a good balance of sleep, rest and physical activity. HWB 2-27a I can explain the links between the energy I use while being physically active, the food I eat, and my health and wellbeing. 19

Balloon Games – adapted from primary resources Keep It Up - Everyone has a balloon and has to try to keep their balloon in the air as long as possible. This can be made more difficult by having children only use one hand or using a body part or having both hands behind their back depending on their age and ability. Hot Potato - Have one balloon between all the people playing and have some music playing. The aim for the children is to keep the balloon up in the air, but to tap it up quickly to avoid being caught as the last child to touch the balloon once music is stopped. You could change this game to make the children ‘freeze when the music stops’ and hope the balloon doesn’t touch them on the way down (children are not allowed to move even if the balloon is coming their way). Add more balloons to the game. Balloon Finger Balancing - Have the children trying to balance a balloon on their finger for as long as possible. Balloon Volleyball - Set up a modified volleyball field with a half way line marked out. One team starts with the balloon and hits the balloon across the halfway line into the other team’s territory, just like a volleyball game. The other team needs to avoid letting the balloon touch the ground and have to send the balloon back over the half way line. Modify the rules to suit the children and the space you are in. A good rule is to have each team have three players touch the balloon before it is hit back over the half way line Balloon Basketball Shooting - Have a basket, a ring or bucket somewhere and have the children lining up trying to ‘shoot’ their balloon into the designated ‘net’ to score. Balloon Blowing - Have the children try to blow a balloon from one end of the room to the other. You could time how long it takes (using stop watches on a mobile) trying to decrease time with each turn. Balloon Relay Race - Have teams of three and the aim is to get the team from one point to another as quickly as possible. The first player in each team blows their team’s balloon. Wherever the balloon lands, the next person moves to that spot and tries to blow the balloon a little further. Where that balloon lands is where the next person starts. This keeps going until a team can get past the designated finish spot. This game could be adapted by tapping the balloon with hand or kicking with foot. 21
Adapted from Primary Resources – PE Warm Ups A good activity for Early Years and First Level. All the family could join in, it’s a good movement break after sitting for any length of time. This is based on the film Monsters Inc. Scary Feet - lift foot off the floor, replace it then lift other foot off the floor etc as quickly as possible (fast feet). Bunk Bed Scare - on tip toes, arms up, fingers clawed, roar loudly. Then bend knees and repeat roar. Children must go from one to the other (repeatedly) as quickly as possible. The Kids Awake - children lie down and be still and silent (keeping quiet and still for 10 – 20 seconds). Monster Walk - take big strides, growling and waving arms. This could be adapted if you wanted to promote creativity of children. Monster Get Away - run as quickly as possible, waving arms and hissing loudly. Depending on the space you have indoors or in your garden you could use different movements. Instead of running it could be hopping, jumping, side stepping, crawling, hopscotch, or even trying these movements backwards. Each different movement could be attributed to a different monster. Explain each part of warm up to the children then pick different section headings calling and changing them as necessary. For safety make sure children all move in the same direction; or create a safe circuit in the space you are using. To extend this activity, children could draw / create pictures of different monsters and give each monster a move. For example; a four eyed red monster could represent hopping. Each time that picture is held up the participants would move in that way. This activity raises the heart rate, puffs the children out and gets rid of excess energy, and great for the whole family. 22
