BSF Strategic Planning Speaker Series 2021 Zayna Khayat, PH.D June 10, 2021 1pm Theme: Social and Demographic Trends Zayna Khayat is Future Strategist with SE Health (formerly, Saint Elizabeth Health Care) a health and social impact enterprise with a major focus on creating a better future for aging adults in their homes and communities. Zayna is Faculty of Singularity University’ Exponential Medicine stream, and is adjunct faculty in the Health Sector Strategy stream at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. Dr. Khayat was previously the lead of health system innovation at MaRS Discovery District, a health innovation hub in Toronto, Canada. In 2017 she was seconded to the REshape Innovation Centre at Radboud university medical centre in the Netherlands. Zayna completed her Ph.D. in diabetes research from the University of Toronto (2001), followed by a career in strategy consulting, including as a Principal in the healthcare practice of The Boston Consulting Group (BCG). She currently resides in Toronto with her husband and three children and is proficient in French and Arabic languages. Publications of Interest: https://youtu.be/Et95fFHM8lA Don Drummond July 15, 2021 1pm Theme: Economic Trends Don Drummond is the Stauffer-Dunning Fellow and Adjunct Professor at the School of Policy Studies at Queen’s University. In 2011-12, he served as Chair for the Commission on the Reform of Ontario’s Public Services. Its final report, released in February 2012, contained nearly four hundred recommendations to provide Ontarians with excellent and affordable public services. Mr. Drummond previously held a series of progressively more senior positions in the areas of economic analysis and forecasting, fiscal policy and tax policy during almost 23 years with Finance Canada. His last three positions were respectively Assistant Deputy Minister of Fiscal Policy and Economic Analysis, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister of Tax Policy & Legislation and most recently, Associate Deputy Minister. In the latter position he was responsible for economic analysis, fiscal policy, tax policy, social policy and federal-provincial relations and coordinated the planning of the annual federal budgets. He subsequently was Senior Vice President and Chief Economist for the TD Bank (2000-2010), where he took the lead with TD Economics’ work in analyzing and forecasting economic performance in Canada and abroad. For Canada, this work was conducted at the city, provincial, industrial and national levels. TD Economics also analyzes the key policies which influence economic performance, including monetary and fiscal policies. Mr. Drummond is currently Chair, Canadian Centre for the Study of Living Standards; Fellow- in-Residence, C.D. Howe Institute and; member of the Expert Advisory Group to the Canadian Institute for Climate Choices. BSF Strategic Planning Speaker Series 2021 Dr. Maya Reshef Kalogirou Date TBD (August 2021) Theme: Environmental Trends Dr. Kalogirou was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. She is a Registered Nurse with a clinical background in emergency room nursing and has recently graduated from the University of Alberta with her doctorate in nursing. Her program of research relates to climate change, health, and nursing practice, and her doctoral work examined: 1) Albertan nurses' perspectives on climate change and health, and 2) how the hospital setting influenced nurses' abilities to practice in environmentally responsible ways. She is passionate about finding ways to help nurses get engaged with the climate crisis and plans to continue working on developing nursing leadership in this field. Maya is the Alberta Representative for the Canadian Association of Nurses for the Environment, a nursing group that is a member of the Canadian Network of Nursing Specialties of the Canadian Nurses Association. Dr. Richard Booth Date TBD (September 2021) Theme: Technological Trends Dr. Richard Booth is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at Western Ontario. His program of research seeks to explore the relationships between human and technological interactions within healthcare and educational contexts. To do this, his research program consists of two main areas of concentration (i.e., streams). The first area of concentration is: (1) technological teaching-learning innovation for nursing education. This area of focus is dedicated to exploring how students and nurses learn, use, and repurpose health technology used in, and for, practice. The second area of concentration is: (2) digitally-enabled healthcare and nursing. As a timely and important area of research, current trends in the development of communication technology, artificial intelligence, automation/augmentation, and big data science have been examined and leveraged to generate future-forward ideas to support the health and wellbeing of people in an interconnected, rapidly changing technological landscape. Along with his current teaching and research requirements, he is a Faculty Scholar Fellow with the provincial Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES), exploring the use of social media technology and its related impact on clinical and health systems utilization. He is also a member of the board of directors of the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN). BSF Strategic Planning Speaker Series 2021 Paul McLoughlin Date TBD (October 2021) Theme: Political Trends Paul McLoughlin has been a keen observer and analyst of Alberta politics since 1983 when he became a member of the Alberta Legislature Press Gallery. In 1993 he created Alberta Scan, a weekly newsletter about provincial politics. Paul is an active broadcaster. He can be heard Thursday mornings on CBC Radio in both Calgary and Edmonton talking about Alberta politics. He has made speeches and presentations on Alberta politics to a wide variety of groups. Roger Marple Date TBD (November 2021, co-presenting with Isobel Mackenzie) Theme: Resident/Patient Perspective Roger Marple (November) lives in Medicine Hat, Alberta and is the proud father and grandfather of 3 grown children and one grandson. He is an avid sports enthusiast, enjoys playing tennis and golf, loves to travel and knows his way around the kitchen with a real appetite for baking. Roger worked for Alberta Health Services and has worked in supply management in the south zone for over 23 years. He also has young onset Alzheimer’s disease. Roger was invited to join the Alzheimer Society of Canada’s advisory group to help raise awareness of the needs of people with dementia, including the specific needs of people living with young onset and/or early stage dementia. Roger also serves on the board of directors of the Alzheimer’s society of Alberta and North West Territories and is active in supporting dementia research in Canada. Since his diagnosis in the summer of 2015, Roger has made it his mission to dispel myths about the disease and the stigma associated with dementia. He is a firm believer that you can live well with this disease regardless of challenges and is passionate about sharing his message of hope. BSF Strategic Planning Speaker Series 2021 Isobel Mackenzie Date TBD (November 2021, co-presenting with Roger Marple) Theme: Resident/Patient Perspective Isobel Mackenzie has over 20 years’ experience working with seniors in home care, licensed care, community services and volunteer services. Isobel led B.C.’s largest not-for-profit agency, serving over 6,000 seniors annually. In this work, Isobel led the implementation of a new model of dementia care that has become a national best practice, and led the first safety accreditation for homecare workers, among many other accomplishments. Isobel has been widely recognized for her work and was named B.C. CEO of the Year for the not-for- profit sector and nominated as a Provincial Health Care Hero. Prior to her appointment as the Seniors Advocate, Isobel served on a number of national and provincial boards and commissions, including the BC Medical Services Commission, the Canadian Homecare Association, BC Care Providers, BC Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry, and the Capital Regional District Housing Corporation. Isobel also served on the University of Victoria’s Board of Governors. Isobel received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Victoria and has a Certificate in Health Care Leadership from the University of Toronto. Philippon, PhD, CHE, is professor emeritus at the University of Alberta, former deputy minister of heath in Alberta, vice-president of the Capital Health Authority and founding co-chair of the Canadian Health Leadership Network. Prior to assuming his present responsibilities; Don held several senior positions in government and in the health care system. He left the position of Assistant Deputy Minister in Saskatchewan in 1987 to assume a similar position in Alberta. From 1987 to 1994, Prof. Philippon served as Assistant, Associate and then Deputy Minister of Alberta Health, at the time when health reform was initiated in Alberta. He also chaired several inter provincial committees including the Conference of Deputy Ministers of Health. In late 1994, he assumed the position of Vice-President of the Referral Hospital System in the newly formed Capital Health Authority in Edmonton where he was responsible for the University, Royal Alexandra and Glenrose Hospitals. From 1998 to 2001, he served as a consultant to assist with the transition of the blood system to Canadian Blood Services (CBS) and as the Executive Advisor, Government Relations. Prof. Philippon is a Certified Member of the College of Health Service Executives. Dr. Philippon’s areas of academic interest include International Health Systems, Leadership Development and Inter Professional Health Sciences Education. He is the co-chair of CHLnet and a member of Policy and Research Advisory Committee for the Canadian College of Health Services Executives.
