Boss, as has CNN, EXTRA, and The Food Network. The
Sauce Boss is the only personality that’s been featured in
“Living Blues”, “GQ”, and “Gourmet Magazine”.

Since making his first batch of gumbo during a 1990 New
Year’s Eve concert, Wharton has also taken his blues and
gumbo to the disaster zones of the Mississippi delta and
to homeless shelters and soup kitchens across America.
Through his charitable group, Plant Gumbo, he’s fed war
veterans, hurricane survivors, and the working poor. The
Sauce Boss offers up nurturing, comforting and healing
in the form of music, food, and above all, his love of the
brotherhood of man.
Bill Wharton has also written a book. “The Life and
Times of Blind Blind Boy Billy” is a memoir. It’s also a
songbook (with soundtrack) and a cookbook. Bill Whar-
ton filets the story of his life, smokes it, and sandwiches
it between photographs, tunes and recipes. It’s the back-
story of a life of sharing food and music. It’s also a story
of the outlaw grower of fine cannabis, and his brush with
the law. The tunes and the recipes follow the story, with
the Sauce Boss mixing media like it was cornbread.”

                                                           By Chuck Van Riper

                                       Don’t be a Data Point

W e have all had the experience of looking something
up on Google and two seconds later having ads for
that very thing show up on our Facebook and Instagram
pages, websites we browse, and all things digital. That’s
because we are being surveilled by tech companies who
make really big bucks on collecting data on browsing
habits of millions of people. They can then sell this data
to companies who try to guess what the general popula-
tion will want to purchase, where the best markets are for
certain things and who is looking to purchase them. This
kind of thing has been going on since the internet became
mainstream. However, in the last decade it has become
extremely pervasive and very lucrative. These days, it is
                               called “surveillance capitalism”.

Capitalism is based on the buying and selling of com-
modities. For example, tracts of land were put together
and sold as real estate. That’s a commodity that’s used to
make money. The advent of electricity was quickly mone-
tized to become a major commodity, as was water, gas, oil,
etc. With surveillance capitalism, human nature becomes
a commodity. It uses the private human experience as a
market dynamic. The human experience has now become
a free, raw material, just like land, to be turned into a mar-
ket plausibility study. As you would probably guess, the
biggest, most powerful players in this are Google, Ama-
zon, Microsoft, and Facebook. They all do it. Every time
you click “like” on Facebook you become a data point,
one of billions, in a certain demographic. Every time you
search on Google, you become a commodity. You get the
idea. So, what do they do with all this data? Surveillance
capitalist sell this data based on not only knowing our be-
havior, but also predicting our behavior. That’s what they
sell, that’s the commodity. These predictions are then sold
to companies so they can determine what their best way of
                               selling us things.

An early experiment was done using the video game Poke-
mon Go. Remember that? Well, it was started and run by
Google. It seemed like a cute augmented reality game and
millions played along. It was actually an experiment to

18 - Brevard Live March 2022
herd masses of people to different places around the town
to places that paid to be a part of the experiment. Places
like McDonald’s and Starbucks. It was an experiment us-
ing games with rewards and punishments to herd millions
of people where they wanted them to go. What a com-
modity to sell! It worked!

Back when nature was commodified, it created jobs and
wealth, but never took into account the effects on the en-
vironment in the long term. What will be the long-term
ramifications of making human data points a major com-
modity? As we’ve seen, it doesn’t take much to move the
masses where you want them to be or sell them what you
want them to buy. With a handful of companies collecting
these data points, how much of your life will be run by
them, unbeknownst to you? What can you do?

Well, there are a few things that might throw them off
their data point. As I’ve pondered before, what would
happen if thousands, no millions of us picked a day and
all Googled “Hello Kitty G-strings?” What if we all asked
Siri “What’s the tensile strength of a porcupine needle?”
What if we all closed our Amazon accounts for a day?
What if we didn’t “like” anything on Facebook? Really,
the weirder things you do, the more their data points are
thrown off. Spend a week just looking for pictures of a
hydraulic lifter from a 67 hemi. Research how to become
invisible.

Some things you can do right now to be safer. Turn off
all location services on your phone. Unless you are us-
ing your GPS, you don’t need them, and they can’t track
your every move. Same thing goes for Bluetooth. I don’t
play music on my phone through my car radio. Besides
being safer, this will make your phone’s battery last lon-
ger, too. You know those cutesy games on Facebook? The
ones that say stuff like “Click your birth year to find out
what you would look like as an alien.” Yea, don’t do that.
Every time you do one of those things, not only do you
become a data point but also put out private information
about yourself. If your going to play those stupid games,
lie. Click the wrong year, pick a color you hate, pick the
wrong month. That’ll shove it up their commodity! So be
safe online, and don’t be a data point!
