Freeman House YEAR 8 CAMP: LAKE DEWAR LODGE, BACCHUS MARSH On 29th April, Melba and Freeman students went on camp to the Lake Dewar Camp in Myrniong. We did heaps of activities over our three days there. My favorite was definitely the flying fox because we got heaps of challenges to do and Harry and I were trying to catch a rock when going down it. I wasn’t scared at all but when we had to walk off with our eyes closed that was a bit scary. The mountain biking was also very good because it was a challenge and also a really good experience. The camp environment was very good with lots of nice people and staff and with beautiful scenery. It was surrounded by sort of a forest but with lots of rocks and things around as well. It was a very beautiful camp in a very beautiful setting. The overall experience was very good because you never got bored. There was always something to keep you occupied and there was always a lovely view to look at. You can even stay there with your family and do all the activities, and go in the pool and use the oval. Overall a very good camp that is definitely worth going to with your mates or your family. I would give it 5 out of 5 stars. Luke Bell, 8FB On 29th April, Year 8 students at Blackburn High school set off to go to Camp Lake Dewar in Myrniong. We did many activities over the three days we were there. My personal favourites were the flying fox, gorge walk, adventure tunnelling, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking and mountain biking. Mountain biking was probably my favourite because the views were amazing and the track took us around the whole camp. The camp environment was just as good too. One of my favourite parts of this experience was just sitting in my cabin hanging out with friends. It was nice and cosy there and it was great talking to some of my friends that I don’t really hang out with anymore. There were plenty of activities to keep you occupied when you had free time like foosball, pool, and various courts for playing tennis and basketball. Overall I had a great time and was glad I had this experience. I have many great memories to take away from this camp. Tahlia Corigliano, 8FB On 29th April, Melba and Freeman went to Lake Dewar Camp. When we arrived at the camp, I could see a huge lake with kayaks and SUPs lined up neatly along it, and other schools playing games in the bush and having a lot of fun. Seeing all the activities was very exciting. My favourite activity were the SUPs (stand up paddleboards). When we started to learn how to stand up, there was a small island in the middle with tiny stone sculptures. We had lots of races and challenges to do. When we went mountain biking, we went through a practice course, but afterwards the instructor said that we were ready for the real deal. It was amazing how long the bike ride went for. We went down slopes, hills and even got to stop to see the amazing view. There were mountains with great big trees and a long winding river that went past the mountains. This was probably the best camp I’ve ever been to. It was amazing how many activities there were to do in free time and the food was delicious. I would like to thank all the instructors, chefs and teachers for letting me have the best camp experience I could ever have this year. Mei Hurley, 8FB Ms Sharon Gardner-Drummond, Freeman House Leader

Year 8 Camp ‘Mountain bike riding, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, adventure tunnelling, flying fox, hiking, an amazing race, life outside the classroom was full of adventure and fun. The Year 8 camp was held at Lake DeWar, located an hour and a half north of Melbourne. We were greeted by two Labradors, and the camp owners who looked after us all well. The highlight of the camp was when my group was trying to flip our instructor off the stand-up paddle board. I’m glad to say we were successful. Thank you to the teachers for fun, laughs and adventures, resulting in us all returning home exhausted but really happy.’ Dana Murphy, H7 ‘The Year 8 camp was very engaging and fun. Almost all of the activities were fun and there was a lot of free time in between activities, where we could play basketball, footy, sit with friends etc. The food was pretty decent and the curfew was reasonable. Overall it was a good experience.’ Daniel Kelly, F4
Humanities Medieval day was overall a wonderful day where we all learnt Humanities - Medieval Day about a long lost culture. We spent the day at different th On 28 March all Year 8 students participated in the annual locations and activities around the school learning about Medieval Day. Students participated in a range of different Europe in the medieval times. We participated in activities activities, in order to consolidate their understanding of such as tournament, archery, weapons and armour, crime Medieval Europe, a topic that they had spent Term 1 and punishment, and troubadours. In Tournament we learnt exploring in their Humanities classes. We then went to crime and punishments. We learnt about what crimes there were and the cruel and stupid punishments that followed. Finally we went to archery where we learnt how to handle a bow and arrow, as well as shoot one. Very few of us actually hit the target. Though there were 5 activities there was only enough time for 4 so everyone missed out on one, and my class missed out on weapons and armour. Overall, medieval day was a great experience for all who participated. Alec G , D11

Student Leadership & Community Links On the afternoon of Wednesday 24th April a group of about 20 students attended the Whitehorse Schools ANZAC Ceremony in Box Hill Gardens. After a chilly morning, the sun came out for the ceremony. Amy Dowler and Ryan Stevens laid a wreath, along with the other schools, and the students listened to a moving address by Adam Lawson from the RAAF. Also in attendance were Ryan Lyddieth and Lachlan Steele who were representing the Army Cadets. It was a great afternoon. Well done to the students who, given it was an early finish day, gave up their free time to represent the school and thanks to Sam Cousins for accompanying me and the students. Ms Louisa Pennell
Music It is difficult to describe the pride felt during the ANZAC Day commemorations last month. The behaviour and commitment to the meaning of ANZAC Day by our wonderful students was admirable. I am very privileged to work with them. It is very special to share these experiences with the students and parents of Symphonic Band and Concert Choir at the Assemblies on Wednesday and Symphonic Band at the March on Thursday. The students understanding of music's role in the ceremonies and their commitment to attend rehearsals and to perform at their highest standard is admirable. It is wonderful to see the students of the Music Department taking on roles as great citizens in our community in such respectful and fulfilling events. Such great people to hang out with too! If you missed us you can have a look on iView ABC coverage around 20 minutes. Ms Jemima Bunn, Director of Music
