Can you believe summer is over and the colors are already changing? Mother Nature sure does know how to put on a show, doesn’t she? Our January EAA retreat is coming up and you’ll find the signup sheet in this newsletter, as well as hard copies at the registration table at the meeting. THANK YOU to previous committee members Barb Harkins, Ann Forseth, Janette Vanevenhoven and Lois McGlynn for all the work they did over the years to make this a wonderful success. I’ve enjoyed each retreat spent with you. The new committee is made up of guild members Maria Clough, Nancy Ottman, Kathy Schmit, Amy Boyd and Diane Lowery. Thank you, ladies! We look forward to spending time with you at the retreat to see what you have in store for us. Barb Harkins, thank you for consulting this year to get the new group up and running. Our new guild challenge is off to a great start. For those of you who have signed up, please keep the theme a secret as it is a Mystery challenge. I can’t wait to see all the amazing creativity again from our group; the last challenge was very inspiring. Who would have thought you could do so much with strips? Nice job, ladies! Thank you all for the positive feedback on the new name badges. They looked great on everyone when I was at the front of the room and it was very nice to see the guests with bright colored badges to make it easier to spot who they were. Please be sure to say hello and welcome when you see a guest at the meeting. We have multiple positions open on the board starting January 1, 2020. They are Vice President, Secretary, and Sunshine. and we need someone for the Membership committee who has Excel experience. If you’d like more information on any of these positions, please see me. None of them take a great deal of time out of your schedule, just monthly board meeting and our normal guild meeting. Our guild holiday dinner is coming up quickly, so please be sure to sign up. We had such a lovely time last year at Van Abel’s and we hope you’ll join us again this year. Barb Harkins will be happy to take your money and get you signed up. Have a wonderful day and Happy Quilting! Debra DNQG Christmas Party Sign-Up The October meeting will be your last chance to Quilt Guild Meeting Notes sign up for the Christmas party at Van Abel’s in Hollandtown on Thursday, Nov. 14. Membership News – Lynn Keller & Toni Reh Sixty-two members and two guests attended the September meeting. One of those guests already signed up for next year, so please welcome back Barb Teerlinck! A membership form for 2020 is attached. Happy October Birthday Dee Bartolazzi, Barbara Harkins, Theresa Kettner, Kathy Moe and Lynn Owen. Congratulations to Marcie Karner who took third place in the Little Chute Windmill Quilt Show last May, and congratulations to the winners of the DNQG “Modern Strips Challenge” in September: Peggy Hawley, first; Carolyn Wenzel, second; Cordi Van Linn, third; Tuulikki Murremaki; fourth; Kris Van Eyck, fifth; and Linda Webster, sixth. Charter member Sue Kiesau was featured in the September issue of Appleton Magazine. The article “Be Careful With What You’re Good At (because you will probably be doing it for the rest of your life)” showcased her amazing talent as a costumer for
theater productions in Appleton, Neenah, Kaukauna, Oshkosh, Brillion, Berlin and Waupaca . . . as well Shakespeare in the Park in Columbus, Ohio. Sue is famous (infamous?) for sewing in the back seat of the car while traveling with her husband. Get well cards were sent to Jane Binder and Kathy Hornby, and a sympathy card was sent to Betty Schaefer. Belated con- dolences to Carrie Cook on the passing of her father last June. Former long-time member Donna Wisnoski is recovering from surgery. If you’d like to drop her a card, her address is 3290 N. 153rd Drive, Goodyear, AZ 85395. Library News – Linda Beiter, Pat Jawort, Debra McDowall and Cordi Van Linn New books last month were Table-Runner Roundup: 13 Quilted Projects to Spice up Your Table by Amelia Johanson, and The Quilting Bible: The Complete Photo Guide to Machine Quilting by Creative Publishing. Great news! Patt Kox has agreed to join the library committee to replace Cordi Van Linn who will be rotating off the committee at the end of the year. Thank you, Cordi, for all you’ve done to help the library committee. Next month we will be selling used books featuring artistic quilts. Come and check out what we have. Folks with overdue books are: June: Terry Butz (1 book) August: Toni Reh (1 book) and Terry Reimers (1 book) Veterans Quilts - Kris Van Eyck and Linda Pujo If any DNQG member would like to request a quilt of valor for someone, contact Kris or Linda. QoV Mystery Quilt – Linda Webster If you did not sign up to get background squares for Linda Webster's mystery quilt, feel free to join in and make some blocks using your own creams or whites for the backgrounds. Step 1 Directions: Cut three 3-7/8” squares from red fabric and three 3-7/8” squares from white fabric; draw a diagonal line on the back of the white squares. Put one red and one white square right sides together (RST) and sew ¼” away on each side of drawn line. Cut on diagonal and press toward red. The six triangle blocks should measure 3-1/2” square. Set aside until Step 2. (An entire quilt requires cutting 48 red and 48 white 3-7/8” squares to make 96 half-square triangle blocks.)
Step 2 Directions: From dark blue fabric, cut a 2” x WOF strip (at least 40”). Join this to a 2” white strip lengthwise and press the seam toward the dark. Cut into six sections, each 3-1/2” x 6-1/2”. Set aside until next month. (An entire quilt requires sixteen 2” dark blue strips cut WOF and 16 of white. Sew and cut these to create 96 units of the joined fabrics.) Step 3 Directions: The red and white half square triangles from Step 1 will be joined to the dark blue and white strips from Step 2. It is important that they be sewn in this EXACT position so the overall design works. Please note that the lower right triangle is ALL WHITE. If you have questions, call Linda Webster at 920-380-9289 or Sherry Fox at 920-380-4407. Step 4 Directions: Cut three medium blue rectangles 9-1/2” x 3-1/2” and six white 3-1/2” squares. Mark a diagonal line on the back of each white square and sew one on each end of the blue rectangles. THE ORIENTATION OF THE SQUARE IS VERY IMPORTANT, SO CHECK THE POSITION SHOWN BELOW BEFORE SEWING. Stitch on the drawn line, trim to ¼” seam allowance and press to the white. Set aside the three completed units for next month when we will join all the units. (An entire quilt requires 48 medium blue 9-1/2 x 3-1/2 rectangles and 96 white 3-1/2” squares.) To make an entire quilt measuring 56” x 74” you’ll need: Dark blue 1 5/8 yards; Red 2/3 yard; White 2-1/2 yards; Medium blue 1 yard; Binding 5/8 yard; Backing 3-7/8 yds. Final Step: The blue/white unit from Step 4 forms the center of the two red/white/blue units from Step 3. Again, orientation of the block is important. You will end up with three blocks. If you’re making an entire quilt, you’ll now have 48 finished blocks which will be arranged in eight rows of six blocks each. All odd rows will start with the block turned so the large blue center is horizontal. The second block will be vertical, alternating across the row. All even rows start with the blue center in a vertical position, then the next block horizontal, alternating across the row. As the rows are joined, a red windmill unit will appear where the red triangles touch. Bring your completed blocks to the October meeting, please. Thank you for helping make this Quilt of Valor Mystery Quilt! Upcoming DNQG Programs – JoAnn Nemitz Class fee for DNQG members is $30 and $40 for non-members. Contact JoAnn Nemitz to register.
