Disengagement can manifest itself in many ways, from dropping out of school to emotional and behavioural problems, which may impact on learning. When young people are unable to learn or complete school, they are unable to move successfully into further education, training or employment and may face a difficult and uncertain future. Young people who are disengaged or at risk of disengagement are likely to experience financial hardship, physical and mental health problems, long term welfare issues and an increased likelihood of involvement in the justice system. This disengagement also has an economic and social cost for the community – placing burdens on all of our systems. 8.9% of young people aged 15-24 years are considered disengaged across the G21 Region, this is higher than that the state average of 8.2%, with higher percentages of disengaged young people residing in some parts of our community including Corio (15.9%), Whittington (20.4%) and Norlane-North Shore (23.6%).1 As a result, supporting young people to re-engage in their learning and supporting their life aspirations is of utmost importance to the Foundation. Our Live and Learn grants seek to support young people to re-engage in learning to support their life aspirations. This year our grants are supporting programs being delivered by the Ardoch Youth Foundation, CatholicCare, Kids Thrive, Somebody’s Daughter Theatre Company, The Song Room, Bluebird Foundation, EdConnect Australia, Operation Newstart Geelong and The Smith Family to help us ensure our children and young people are succeeding.
