What Is A Big Boat?
What Is A Big Boat?
What Is A Big Boat? Premise: ”Big” is subjective https://angusrowboats.com/pages/bumblebee-sailboat
What Is A Big Boat? JBB
What Is A Big Boat? • Premise: ”Big” is subjective • Ergo: • For the purposes of this presentation, a big boat is anything longer than 15 feet • Generally has more than 3 people • Generally has a keel • Pro tip: Dream big, but work with what you have!
What Is A Big Boat? Junior Big Boat Sailing Program. The Junior Big Boat Sailing(JBBS) Program is an opportunity for teens to sail with an instructor, or coach, on 35-45 foot well- outfitted sailboats http://www.ussailing.org/education/jbbs/
What Is A Big Boat? Premise: ”Big” is subjective Ergo: We are going to make some general assumptions and go from there For the purposes of this presentation, a big boat is preferably 35 to 45 feet We are all coming from different areas with different resources. Many skills translate! Big Boat training worst best with the right tools
What Do Big Boats Do? (A bit of everything?) • Buoy Racing • Coastal Cruising • Government Mark Racing • Overnights • Middle and Long Distance Racing • Blue Water Cruising • Round the World Racing • Raft Ups • Repair and Maintenance
Different Models of JBBs • Stand Alone Programs • SeaScouts, Community Programs, Young American Sailing Academy, Tall Ships and more • Hybrid • Mix of other models • Augmented and enhanced existing Junior Programs that normally focus on primarily on dinghies • As an afterthought or last minute panic situation • Doesn’t work!
JBB isn’t loading up kids on a rail as ballast and throwing cold water on to them • Many junior sailors are used to be active • Set them up for success! • Make sure juniors are dressed appropriately • Being cold or hot lessens the experience • Find jobs for them to do • Find great coaches and mentors! • All volunteers are not created equal • Find appropriate jobs for everyone that wants to ”help” • Shadowing other jobs can be a great way to start
How To Get Big Boats Involved in What You Already Do • Most programs have a mission statement or core beliefs • What is your definition of success? • When looking at existing or new programs, see what makes sense for your program • Watch, Emulate and Enhance! • Its nice to copy successful programs, but do what is best for your circumstances once you get things going in the right direction.
What makes sense for your program? • The next door club isn’t always right • But they might be on to something! • What program of theirs can you import and improve? • What is your sailing venue like? • Depth? Hazards? Traffic? Current? Wind? Resources? • If your venue isn’t conducive to big boat sailing, is there another local area that you could keep a boat? • What are the local fleets in the area? • Are they looking for more participation? • (please send me their fleet captain’s name b/c I’d like to hire them! Maxing out fleet capacity is an impressive feat) • Partners • Your program doesn’t have to go it alone!
What is it about big boats that you love? Lets ask the experts
What is it about big boats? “I love the teamwork involved challenges of communicating and working with a team to achieve our goals. The interconnectedness of the various jobs is more important than any other group activity outside of sailing.” -Megan Ploch aged 18 years 2017 International Keel Boat Championship – Skipper Favorite JBB moment? ”Beach Point overnight a few years ago when a huge squall came through for about 10 minute. The wind went from 3 to 40 Kts in a second, so we carried the spinnaker to punch out and sail further than most of the fleet until we too broached for a solid 5 minutes until we got the sails down.”
What is it about big boats that you love? “Big Boats allow sailors to focus on individual parts of the boat and dial in skills to improve on one by one.” - Matthew Wallace ’14 years of age JBB moment that sticks out in your mind? ”Definitely when the breeze was up during the last 50 miles of the vineyard race and we all were pushing the boat as hard as we could. We were hoping to break 17 knots.”
What is it about big boats? “I love JBB. It is important for young sailors because it teaches respect among your crew. No one position is more important than the next, so kids learn from each other and respect everyone’s opinion and contribution.” -Maddy Ploch aged 16 years JBB moment that sticks out in your mind? ”Bermuda” (She was the youngest crew member) or “a J105 regatta this Fall when a J105 owner/driver rightly protested me out of a day of racing for the owner/driver class rule. He rightly saw me, a 15 year old junior, as a threat and protested us out when we beat him. Frustrating at the time, but in a way, it was a huge compliment.”
What is it about big boats that you love? “Team work and working with some of my closest friends. We like showing that a group of kids can sail well and often better than the adults!” JBB moment that sticks out in your mind? “Vineyard Race 2017. After 30+ sail changes, it was 3am when we were coming off shift. We “Variety! We are trying to get into sat on the rails and there was a pod of dolphins some double handed distance racing!” playing in the bow wake. They stayed with us for about 10 minutes.” -Nick Hein 16 years old -Eric Dowd 16 years old
What is it about big boats? “Big boats, unlike some dinghies challenges one to work with a larger team with sometimes more, complex, dynamics. They open a sustainable way to be part of the greater sailing world. People can sail big boats their whole lives and still be part of a competitive community of sailors.” -Carina Becker aged 18 years Recent achievement: All Female Crew for the 2017 Sydney to Hobart Race BU sailor and just completed the Sydney Hobart Race on the Magenta Project Boat JBB moment that sticks out in your mind? ”Driving for a lot of the Sydney to Hobart Race.”
Why Big Boats? • Stable teaching platform • More specialized jobs • Can be relatively inexpensive craft • Ways to get value! • Coaches/Mentors can be in the boat! • Inclusive • Utility with Existing Assets • Opportunities to expand the community • Life lessons • Larger Playground • More than just windward – leeward courses
JBB Is More Inclusive And Flexible • Skills • Individual • Team • Body size • Knowledge • Confidence • Levels of comfort • Anxiety/pressure • Timing • New events with different people • Bigger weather windows • Different Challenges and more complex skills
US Sailing’s Teaching Tenets • Sailors learn by • Seeing – most sailors learn by watching • Hearing – many sailors learn by listening • Doing/Feeling – some sailors learn by doing • Repetition – multiple opportunities to learn
Repetition – multiple opportunities to learn • Talent is learned and earned through extended and intense practice of a skill • Time on a big boat helps focus that • See similar problems from different angles • 10,000 hours is a great start • “The harder I work the luckier I get!” • Purposeful and productive training • Break through a skill level plataue http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20121114-gladwells-10000-hour-rule-myth
Shift in perspective – allows sailors to see from a different angle Shift in perspective - allows additional learning opportunities
Individualized Jobs: Allow focus, accountability, in depth knowledge of area systems and hopefully; mastery "I do one thing at a time. I do it very well. And then I move on." - Dr. Charles Emerson Winchester III [ M*A*S*H Season 6, Episode 1, "Fade in, Fade out"].
In Many Areas JBB Can Go Deeper • Knots • Teamwork • Seamanship • Splicing • Systems • Planning and Provisioning • Psychology
Opportunity To Be More Inclusive and Welcoming • Different skill levels can be on the same platform • Dinghies have less people and knowledge and skill gap can be more evident • Humans tend to prefer to do things they are good at • How fun is it jump on a boat with fun people and be successful? • Being in the back of a fleet can get old pretty quickly • (I’ve definitely had my share of races that have made other people feel very good about their own abilities)
JBB Can Be A Contained Program • Trailers Rarely Needed • Numbers can be flexible • Generally don’t need a powerboat • Teachable moments can be instant • Easier for knowledge to be shared • Built in carpool • Different types of pressure • Team dynamics, not necessarily individual or pairs • Shelter from the weather • Event dependent • AIS = every helicopters’ parents dream
At some Level Body Types Exist For All Sports
Body Type • At some point bodies do matter • Too big/too small • Loaded message • Pressure • Body and brains • The bigger the boat, the more options there are
The Power Of Peer Influence Childhood development researchers have long argued that peers are much more important than parents in and after middle school in terms of: • Decision Making • Confidence Levels • Attitudes • Behavior
The Power Of Peer Influence Different than ”Pier Influence”
The Power Of Peer Influence In a world of ever increased online pressures, positive teams can change an athletes trajectory.
Can Be A Family Thing • Family sailing can often reinforce lessons learned during the week! • (most of the time) • More utility for the boats • Its fun to watch younger sailors taking charge • Starts, docking, main trim etc.
Keel Boats can link to other • Reinforce previous lessons programs • Introduce new concepts • Create future learning bridge opportunities • Unique learning experiences • Information is easier to find in your brain if is different • True, it may be the appear to be the same thing in a different platform, but if done right it can be a game changer
JBB Myths • Expensive! • Dangerous! • To complicated! • More bodies • More things to break • What if they hit something?
The other side of the coin – JBB Concerns • More stuff to break • True, but more stuff to fix! • Some people love fixing stuff • Need more people to go sailing • Opportunity to pull new people into our sport • Everything Costs More • Depends on the program! • Some folk might donate • More people to share responsibilities • More power and more load
Some context: We train in the Western part of Long Island Sound. We sail and compete all over!

Most of our sailors have a few years sailing dinghies • Success begets success? • Fun breeds more fun • Many, but not all sail dinghies • We are proud of the newer sailors that join us • Many, not all sail with families and friends • Friendships and peer interest are a big part o JBB • JBB is a right of passage for some • JBB is and identity for others
The J105 • Great Teaching Platform • Achievable price • Boats do everything that you need and then some • Introduced in 1991 as the first modern day keelboat with bow-sprit and asymmetric spinnaker • The most successful one-design keelboat class over 30' in the USA with over 680 boats sailing worldwide • 34 and half feet… not technically a big boat!
Young American Evolution It takes a village: • Leaders • Parents • Vendors • Sponsors • Staff • Guest Coaches • Supportive Club • Local Fleets • USMMA Sailing Foundation
Young American Evolution • 2011 • Volunteer Leadership Group • Volunteer Supplied Boats • Friday Nights • Members would assign jr. sailors to member boats • At the dock or driving around on a club powerboat giving owners very little option to take one or two sailors
Young American Evolution 2012 -2014 2015 • New parent leaders organized a separate 501c3 and purchase a j105 • We tried a morning big boat dedicated to the sole use of junior program with limited success big boat training • Fear of missing out (FOMO) • 35 Sailors with a core group of 10 • Parent Group • Most sailors wanted to sail both • Rotated duties dinghies and big boats • Worked to get the J105 up to speed • Upgraded systems through the years • Dinghies during the week days • Expanded • Weeknights and weekends were • Older Sailors started branching off for JBB • Friday Night JAM Series • Weekend Racing Opportunities • April to November
Young American Evolution 2016 2016 Newport to Bermuda • Parent leaders chartered High Noon • Spent much of the spring rebuilding and training on the Tripp 41 • High Noon was formerly Steve Benjamin’s IRC weapon • Fast • Powerful • Stripped down to the essentials • Sailed the boat as often as possible
Peter’s Plan We got the kids excited and then we planned backwards • Crawl • Stratford Shoals Race • 30-60 miles • Some night sailing • Block Island • Walk • 180 miles • True Overnight Distance • Run • Vineyard Race • 300 miles • Serious Overnight Sailing
