UAL’s Post-Grad Community provides not only a support network to our postgraduate students but also access to cross-College and cross-disciplinary opportunities and events. This leads to an informed, connected and confident network of creative professionals who continue to inspire each other throughout their careers. A programme of events encourages skills sharing, networking, collaboration and new communities of practice. Events take place at UAL and further afield, and include talks with industry specialists, visits to artists’ studios, curator-led tours and student-led activity. We support a growing number of issue- specific, cross-disciplinary groups led by postgraduate students and academics. These connect creatives with shared research interests across different subject areas. The weekly newsletter shares details of events, opportunities, student articles and open calls for collaboration. My London story Anna Tsuda Anna applied to the MSc Creative Computing course while in the final year of her undergraduate degree at Camberwell College of Arts, where she studied Graphic Design. Originally from Japan, she has been overwhelmed by the range of possibilities and creative opportunities that London has opened up. “Coming from a small city in Japan, I used to have to take the bullet train to Tokyo so I could attend art, design and tech events, so it’s a privilege to now have so many opportunities on my doorstep in London. Going to events outside of university has helped me to explore new realms, network with interesting people and expand my design practice. I’m still absolutely amazed by the number of events, meetups and exhibitions constantly happening in the city. At the beginning of the year, I got really excited and signed myself up to a load of extracurricular activities, soon realising that I had a bit too much on my plate! I’ve cut down on my commitments now and I’m focusing on my studies and two part- time jobs. I feel a lot less overwhelmed! Just remember to always do what feels right for you and enjoy every moment.” Anna Tsuda MSc Creative Computing Creative Computing Institute annatsuda.com 30 30

My career journey Yoav Segal Yoav began his Masters degree so he could refocus his career path and pursue his ambition of becoming a theatre designer. At UAL he discovered an artists’ community that felt like home and a course that has given him the technical skills and conceptual approach he needs to build his future success. “Since I was a kid I’ve adored theatre: the gripping storytelling, the magic in the air, the flare and ingenuity of its design. I’ve worked a lot in the industry since, but I lacked the precise skills to actually become a designer. I needed to delve into the technical and practical aspects of it. My course has been fantastically hands-on. My first project has been a whirlwind guide to all aspects of theatre design, from rigorously researching a text to learning the fineries of costume drawing. I’m only halfway through, but it’s already built my confidence and belief that I’ll be able to forge a career as a designer. UAL has so many campuses, lectures, workshops, technical departments and experts. Consume as much as possible, because in the ‘real’ world lots of the skills you can learn and connections you can make are hard to come by.” Yoav Segal MA Theatre Design (now MA Theatre and Performance Design: Theatre Design) Wimbledon College of Arts @mryoavsegal 33 33
