PREFACE BY PRESIDENT Bible College of Malaysia (BCM) is a national Assemblies of God training college for ministry and leadership. BCM is committed to providing you with the finest possible ministry training in the Pentecostal tradition. The faculty in BCM are men and women who are pastors-teachers (Eph 4:11), committed to sound theological scholarship, academic excellence, fervency and relevance in ministry, and depth in Pentecostal spirituality. BCM offers different programs of training leading to degrees, diplomas, or certificates. Students come from all over Malaysia as well as from other countries, and though most are from the Assemblies of God, we welcome students from other church traditions, including independent church groups. Many are preparing to be pastors, church workers, counselors, evangelists, missionaries and teachers. Others are lay leaders who desire to be better equipped for ministry within their own local churches. BCM has over 1000 graduates since its inception. Many are actively serving in Malaysia as pastors, church workers, evangelists, teachers, and parachurch leaders. Some are serving as missionaries in the various countries of the Asia-Pacific region, in Africa, in Europe and in the Americas. Our alumni include several outstanding Christian leaders not only nationally but internationally as well. I invite you to join us in preparing yourself to serve the Lord more effectively in the ministry to which He has called you. As you examine this catalogue, I am sure you will find a program and courses that will suit your individual needs. Be assured that we will do everything possible to help you meet your ministry goals. We are dedicated to "preparing lives for ministry." Rev Dr Victor Lee Tat Yan PhD Divinity (University of Aberdeen) MTh (Trinity Theological College, Singapore) BTh (Bible College of Malaysia) 4
MISSION & VISION STATEMENT AND PURPOSE MISSION STATEMENT Bible College of Malaysia is an educational institution whose primary mission is to equip and to provide holistic training for men and women called of God that they may develop their God-given gifts (Ephesians 4:11-12) and serve effectively in the propagation of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ in Malaysia and other nations (Mark 16:15). VISION STATEMENT BCM is a Spirit-filled community that seeks to integrate sound biblical scholarship with cutting- edge ministry and leadership training that will prepare men and women for godly ministry which combines life-transforming service, visionary leadership, spiritual discernment, evangelistic zeal, missionary fervor and life-long study of the Word. PURPOSE . To train Christian workers in the knowledge of the Word of God and in methods of effective ministry: Bible College of Malaysia recognizes the Bible as the divine foundation and communication of truth. Students are encouraged to read and research books which contain a great store of wisdom and knowledge, but students are taught that they must evaluate all writings in the light of the infallible Word of God – the final authority concerning all doctrinal and theological truth. . To maintain an environment and atmosphere which will foster and nourish the spiritual life of the students: Bible College of Malaysia recognizes the need for the development of the student’s intellectual, physical, social and spiritual potential if he is to be a whole person whose life is useful, complete and satisfying. . To stimulate evangelistic and missionary zeal to evangelize Malaysia and other nations: Bible College of Malaysia, recognizing the divine imperative of the Great Commission, seeks to develop student awareness and involvement in world missions. . To contribute to unity and the maintaining of the highest standard of Christian conduct and service: Bible College of Malaysia seeks to cultivate Christian character in its students. Its programs are designed, both academically and practically, to help the student develop a self-disciplined life and maintain a right relationship with God and his fellow men in order that he may be prepared to act responsibly and maturely in the society in which he lives. . To serve as an instrument to perpetuate and to strengthen the work of the Assemblies of God: Bible College of Malaysia recognises its distinctive obligation to safeguard and to propagate the historic Pentecostal faith and testimony of the Assemblies of God. 5
STATEMENT OF FAITH Bible College of Malaysia subscribes to the Statement of Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. The following is a summary. We believe: ▪ the Bible is the inspired Word of God, the infallible rule of faith and conduct for all men. ▪ there is one God, eternally existent in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. ▪ in the Deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His visible future return to earth to rule for a thousand years. ▪ in the rapture of the Church at Christ’s return to this earth; this is the blessed and living hope of all believers. ▪ “by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin: and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” ▪ the only means of being cleansed from sin is through repentance and faith in the cleansing power of the blood of Christ. ▪ regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for personal salvation. ▪ by Christ’s atoning death on the Cross, healing for the human body is available in answer to faith and prayer. ▪ in the baptism in the Holy Spirit according to Acts 2:4, which may be received by all believers for effective life and service. ▪ in the dwelling sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit which enables the Christian to live a holy life. ▪ in the bodily resurrection of the saved and the lost, the one to everlasting life and the other everlasting punishment. 6
GENERAL INFORMATION HISTORY Bible College of Malaysia (BCM) was established as the Bible Institute of Malaya in 1960 to train national workers for the gospel. It started with a humble beginning with the first class of seven students (four men and three women) who graduated in 1962. From its inception, the emphasis of the College has been on a holistic training program for the full-time ministry of the gospel, and a three-year Bible college diploma was offered. At first, the programs were offered in English. Students wishing to study in Chinese would go to Ecclesia Bible Institute in Hong Kong. Between 1968 and 1972, several students were able to do their studies in Chinese under the direction of Rev David and Alice Nyien. However, a full- fledged Chinese department was formed only in 1980. In 1982, the name was changed to the Bible College of Malaysia with the introduction of the Bachelor of Theology (English) program. A Certificate of Biblical Studies for lay leaders was started in 1986. BCM was accredited by the Asia Theological Association (ATA) in 1989. In 1990 BCM became the first chartered member of the Asia Pacific Theological Association (APTA). BCM was accredited by APTA between 1994-1999. BCM is also a founding member of the Malaysian Association of Theological Schools (MATS). In 2001, the Chinese Bachelor of Theology program was introduced with modular courses, and later it became part of the regular program in 2004. In 2003, the Bahasa Malaysia (BM) department was formed with the offering of the Diploma of Theology program. Then in 2010, the BM department started the Bachelor of Theology program. The graduate-level theological program was introduced first as Master of Ministry program in 2004 (English) and 2010 (Chinese). Then, the Master of Divinity started in 2008 (English) and 2019 (Chinese). In addition, BCM partners with Global Training Ministries, founded by Kevin and Glenys Hovey, to offer a missionary training program (World Harvest Institute) in 2005. This program had to terminate in 2015 as the Australian Trainers could no longer come to Malaysia. In 2006, BCM partnered with Seminari Theologi Malaysia and Malaysian CARE to offer a Certificate in Christian Ministry (Social Ministry). This program ended in 2012 due to a change of training focus with one of the program partners. The Diploma of Counseling Studies (English) began as a partnership between BCM, Christian Heritage College and Malaysian Care in 2007. This program was nationalized in 2013 and is now offered under BCM as Diploma of Ministerial Counseling. In 2018, BCM commenced the Bachelor of Ministerial Counseling program. In 2019, the Graduate and Postgraduate of Ministerial Counseling was started. The Advance Diploma of Ministerial Counseling was subsequently launched in year 2020. The Chinese department began its Diploma of Ministerial Counseling program in 2014 and the Bachelor of Ministerial Counseling in 2020. BCM is also a member school of Asia Graduate School of Theology, AGST-Alliance, a consortium of theological colleges and seminaries offering quality post-graduate programs to 7
prepare scholars and leaders to equip the church in Asia. In 2015, BCM joined with AGST Alliance and Malaysia Bible Seminary to offer the Doctor of Ministry in Leadership program. This program aimed to equip ministry practitioners to be more competent and reflective in their leadership roles. In 2017, BCM started the third graduate-level theological program, the Master of Leadership Development program (English), which aimed to provide practical leadership training for pastors who had been pastoring for more than three years. The same program is offered in Chinese language starting year 2020. Licentiate of Theology program was introduced in year 2017 to train ministers of the Assemblies of God denomination for credential application. To help train leaders for the local churches, BCM also has several extension centers throughout Malaysia offering courses in all three languages. GOVERNANCE BCM is wholly owned by the General Council of the Assemblies of God of Malaysia. It is governed by a Board of Directors: two representatives appointed by the Executive Committee (EXCO) of the Assemblies of God Malaysia from amongst the EXCO members; one representative appointed by the EXCO and who is not an EXCO member; two appointees by the Board of Directors; and the President of the Alumni Fellowship. ACCREDITATION The Diploma of Theology (English, Chinese, BM), the Bachelor of Theology (English, Chinese and BM), the Master of Ministry (English and Chinese) and the Master of Divinity (English) study programs are accredited by the Asia Theological Association. Malaysia Association of Theological Schools: • Asia Graduate School of Theology • Malaysian Baptist Theological Seminary • Malaysia Bible Seminary • Methodist Theological School • Seminari Theoloji Malaysia • AOIC 8
