A MESSAGE FROM Kendra B. Woods Dear Concord Lake STEAM Academy Community, Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! I am thrilled to be welcoming your children back to school! We have eagerly anticipated the full reopening of our campus. Our continued commitment to fostering resilience, perseverance, grit, empathy, and continued open communication will undoubtedly help our students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. The past year and a half have been uncharted territory during the pandemic, but I could not be prouder of our attitudes and accomplishments. Despite the stressors put on families, teachers, and students, we continued to see students make academic gains, mature, and develop perseverance. Our technology skills and communication improved beyond imagination, and we learned to be more creative, flexible, and appreciative. We are so excited to start off our school year with a brand-new outlook and a fresh perspective on what makes our school so successful. We have learned so much since the pandemic and will continue to do everything within our power to provide a safe learning environment for our students, teachers, staff and visitors. As the risks of the pandemic continue to decrease with vaccinations, we will continue to refer to CDC, state and local guidance for opening and running schools safely. The protocols and recommendations have changed, and we too have updated some of our practices. We will continue to monitor the health of our school community and the community-at-large to determine our actions. We will always retain the right to make changes as necessary to provide the best environment for the social and emotional well-being of our school family and will advise you if our protocols or practices will change. In this handbook, please find our most updated protocols for the upcoming school year. We’re coming out of this stronger and smarter than we ever were before and expect our school family to thrive and grow beyond our greatest expectations. Thank you for your continued trust as we look forward to a great year where we accomplish more than we could ever imagine. At CLSA, we are “Better Together”! Mobile Learning Plan We are looking forward to our students returning to in-person learning and the great opportunities we have to continue to use all that we learned in the last year. We look forward to utilizing our Mobile Classroom to complement our in-person instruction and ensure our students are successful in school and in life. Teachers have learned to implement the Mobile Classroom to provide technology enhanced instruction across all classrooms leveraging the digital learning management system Schoology, digital conferencing tools like Zoom and TEAMS, and the OWL digital conferencing device to improve access to quality instruction and resources in a variety of situations and settings. Students have benefitted from the innovation of the last year and will continue to have a variety of opportunities and experiences moving forward. Mobile Classroom enhanced in-person learning may be implemented to provide in class, extended learning; extended reach of our best teachers; and/or stage, not age, personalized learning. Due to continued pandemic concerns, we do understand exceptions to in-person learning may be needed to fully meet the needs of specific students. Our schools will consider the need for mobile instruction for the following possible exceptions ): Exceptions: • Health Accommodation as documented on IEP or 504 Plan • Short- or long-term suspensions • Responding to COVID-19 emergencies including providing instruction to students who have been exposed or have been quarantined • Classes provided through the existing NCVPS program Students who meet the qualifications for an exception will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis with consideration of student growth and success as the primary goal. Schools will use the student’s IEP, 504 and/or Personalized Learning Plan as a basis for the implementation and documentation of a mobile learning exception. Implementation of Mobile Instruction: Implementation of mobile instruction will be determined by the school based on student needs. Examples for mobile instruction models include but are not limited to: • Synchronous blended instruction with grade level teacher(s) • Asynchronous blended instruction with grade level teacher(s) • Fully-mobile instruction with grade level or grade band teacher(s) • A combination of synchronous and asynchronous instruction with grade level or grade band teacher(s) BACK TO SCHOOL PLAN Concord Lake STEAM Academy 2021–2022
