Sonia Andrews Moscow, Russia Soniaandrewsart@gmail.com https://www.instagram.com/soniaandrewsart/?hl=en Sonia Andrews My name is Sonia Andrews and I am a young Russian artist living and working in Moscow. I am passionate about working with contrasts and contradictions that evoke an uncanny feeling - by employing lusciously bright colours in my digital works, sculpture and screen-printing, a rather dark and disturbing underpinning is suggested. I am keen on exploring such topics as representation of beauty; deconstruction and transformation; ecological problems, automatisation and chance through equally meticulous digital and analog practices that are usually sequent to one another. Freddie Bommer II Hemet, California, USA freddiebphotography@gmail.com https://www.freddiebphotography.com Freddie Bommer II In mid-2013, I decided to break loose from the bonds of the automatic camera mode as to allow myself the freedom to control what I create from what I viewed of the world through the lens of my camera - the creative freedom to fully express my artistic visions and to “speak” through my images. Being an Aspie, I have challenges with my social & communication skills so my camera is my “voice” and where I am most comfortable...a means for me to share the beauty of the world around me and those within it. After retirement in July 2016; after nearly 30 years of a career that was my “life”, I set forth on my photographic journey to capture such images to evoke emotions, cause reflective thought, and to cause one to gasp from the sheer “depth” of what I create; for this is the photographer I aspire to be and anything less, for me, will not be acceptable. Jen Cherna New Orleans, Louisiana, USA jen.cherna@gmail.com https://www.jcherna.com Jen Cherna Drawing from historical, symbolic, religious and mythological imagery, I trace anew an ontology of woman representation and inequality, by translating contemporary feminist ideas into installations where new media is often paired with paintings made using traditional techniques. Using mixed media painting and photography, the inner landscape of our minds is explored weaving a labyrinth of dream-like images. Concepts of the shadow self, feminine archetypes, and cross- cultural symbolism are often present. My work often involves the transformation of the female archetype of the virgin/ whore dichotomy which pervades most of western art and religion. Rebecca Katz San Rafael, California, USA rebecca@rebeccakatz.com https://www.rebeccakatzart.com Rebecca Katz “I’m enamored with color, texture, atmosphere, depth and the interplay of light. Eyes wide open, I take what I see and explore it in an ever-changing process of visual notation. It’s absolutely my way of staying completely present in the world.” I grew up with a spatula in one hand and a paintbrush in another, among a family of artists and cooks. I received my first watercolors at age 5, when I also observed my mother and grandmother transforming mounds of brilliant vegetables into delicious, comforting soups. I’ve blended the two together, as chef/author of 5 award-winning cookbooks and a mixed media artist. In my twenties I worked in marketing in NYC. One grey day, in my tall grey office building in my grey office, I had a flash of insight. If I continued on my current career path, not only would I be burned out in short order, but I would live a grey life. I fled to Italy, with no language and no luggage (mine was lost), clutching a map in Italian and my innate curiosity, I found color, texture and atmosphere. I found a studio to paint in mornings and an Italian signora to teach me cooking in the afternoons. I began a life of exploration, inspiration and healing through food and art, and offering that to the world of people in search of both. I became a professional chef. I found my niche in food and healing. I played with flavor, color and texture to connect nutrition science to the plate, and pioneered an intelligent, novel and delicious use of food in the treatment of cancer. My nonprofit Healing Kitchens Institute continues to work closely on healing through food with survivors and health professionals in major US cancer centers. Today, I find making art and cooking creatively are both opportunities to be fully present in life, to pay attention to color, texture and composition. To be inspired by nature. To be so absorbed in tasks that time expands. Working in my kitchen or studio is an immersion experience, in a vibrant, reverent, tactile, visual world. Ulyana Korol Lviv, Ukraine uljana.korol@gmail.com http://ulyanakorol.com/ Ulyana Korol Ulyana Korol is an experienced contemporary painter from Ukraine whose works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions internationally. She works in the technique of mastichin fine art oil painting. Her canvases emit a warm light and highlight the beauty of nature. Ulyana draws her artistic inspiration from travelling. A lot of amazing subjects often make her literally “hunt” with the camera on them. In her paintings Ulyana shows the bright, unique and fragile beauty of nature noticed by her. Sometimes it is the purple absolute of the endless lavender field or a mysterious passion flower found in the shade of palm leaves, some white oleander bush, a scarlet pomegranate flower or incredible emerald shades of sea waves…Artist’s passion for photography also has had an impact on her art. Ulyana captures flowers in macro format. She has transferred this technique to her paintings. The image of a large, very close-up flower on the whole canvas has become her speciality. All the energy, the brightness of colors, the love of life Ulyana transfers to her works, which vibrate with the sun, warmth and positive. For more juiciness she uses the technique of palette knife painting. The artist is delighted to be able to combine pastous textured brush strokes with the image of a graceful bending of a flower petal. Ulyana’s works are held in numerous private collections in the U.S., Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and Asia. During this time Kevin served in the RAAF and retired in 2009 to pursue the creative life. Kevin and his family have returned to live in the Fraser Coast region once again. Kevin was recently awarded Master Status in the Coloured Pencil art form, voted by an international panel, Kevin is only one of 21 worldwide to reach this level of achievement. There are only 5 Australian’s in this list and he is the only Queenslander. Kevin has always had an interest in art and photography and since his first win at an art competition at the age of 13 in 1970, he has created art to this very day. He has amassed an impressive portfolio of winning artworks in many competitions around Australia and internationally. Kevin is a innovative when it comes to colouring his works as he has devised a way to extract coloured tannins from Australian native plants. These colours feature in some of his works. He says it is hard to describe some of the colours he produces as they are ‘different’ to the standard palette of colours. “Australian Artists” is a Facebook page Kevin began and has administered since 2013. The group has around 10,000 members across the country. Kevin enjoys imparting his knowledge and time to art and receives the same in return from the talented members of his group. Kevin also runs free Coloured Pencil Workshops at the Maryborough Art Gallery. Kevin is married to Jeanette since 1980 and has two children and two grandchildren. Kevin and his wife have done three laps of Australia and travelled many outback tracks, one of which led them to Daly Waters in the Northern Territory to help a mate mow his lawn….it turned out that they bought the house off him and lived in the village of 8 people for 8 years. It was here, Kevin built a rustic “Outback Workshop Gallery”, which was visited by thousands of people each year. From this little village they travelled to outlying stations, crocodile infested waters, aboriginal towns and isolated fishing villages to get inspiration for his artworks. Kevin’s exhibitions encompass works from as small as a Kevin Rogers CPCAM postcard to as big as a metre wide pieces. There is something for everyone in his collection. George exhibited his work, in both painting and sculpture, in Liverpool, Wales, and as part of an art collective in Norwich, before immigrating to Canada in 2000. His current work is about the language of light and dark and its ability to draw the mind’s focus. A driver of a car will see the child cross the road and the crow descend on carrion but not remember the trees or houses that surround those images. George’s work is about these points of focused attention, in which the unnecessary and superfluous disappear. Marian Wihak Toronto, Ontario, Canada marian@marianwihak.com https://www.marianwihak.com Marian Wihak Marian Wihak is a Canadian multi-disciplinary artist, born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan, who lives and works in Toronto. Originally trained in theatre design with a long-standing career as a film designer and an established visual art practice, she holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art, Media and Design. Marian’s work is informed by her experience as a painter and as a conjurer of three-dimensional, metaphoric, narrative spaces. At the core of her practice she believes in the potential of the aesthetic experience to inform and transform our lives; through its capacity to show us something we didn’t know we knew, it invites surprise and new considerations prompting refection about one’s own state of being in the world and within the larger, encompassing, fluid sense of time. BOUNDLESS STATEMENT: Boundless is a series of large-scale oil paintings created over a period of 7 years, which reference dramatic weather systems, and limitless geographical horizons as witnessed in the great plains of Southern Saskatchewan and Alberta. The experience of being within that infinite space tethers and perhaps diminishes us, yet also exhilarates and fulfills us by igniting the imaginative leap. View I was initially conceived within a multi-panel panorama entitled Boundless: the view from here, in which each painting also exists as a substantive individual work. The paintings in the Boundless series are expansive, stylized representations that are as much metaphors for spiritual longing as they are portraits of a magnificent geography, and I use them as icons to convey ideas about boundlessness: The concept of “boundless” is a sublime one that has been universal since the beginning of conscious thinking; The word chaos has been used to describe this boundless space, this void, this deep, drawing its twofold meaning from the ancient Greek word Marian Wihak 1st View I (Boundless), 2008 “cha” – holding and releasing. In this way, I embrace affirmative definitions of chaos, as a state of being that is rife with change, upset and yet also, potential. While working on the Boundless series, I travelled across the southern band of Oil on Canvas, 36 x 72 in Alberta and Saskatchewan during a summer marked by awesome storms and dramatic meteorological activity. I became $5,000 USD all too aware of how these powerful forces of nature are multiplying in tandem with our compromised environment. The resulting spectacle of the skies offers a palpable signifier of the seismic shift in our actual physical place in this universe, inextricably linking the part we play now, with all and future ways. Curator Review: View I (Boundless) This fearless work by artist Marian Wihak touches on expansion and the atmospheric. The dark, infinite sky has been imbued with a sense of drama and beautiful melancholy. Wihak’s distant horizon and soft strands of painted light, gives the viewer an empirical experience. Be it internal or external in existence, this wondrous palette and perspective work speaks the language of emancipation. - E.E. Jacks APÉRO Catalogue Haze - June 2020 56
