Monday 5 July 09:00-09:45 FE Commissioner Launch: Good practice guide for college management accounts Speakers: Frances Wadsworth, FE Commissioner (Interim), Steve Hutchinson, Deputy FE Commissioner and Andrew Tyley, Deputy FE Commissioner, Department for Education As part of an increased focus on support to the sector, Frances Wadsworth as Interim FE Commissioner introduces a new good practice guide aimed at promoting best practice in the presentation of college management accounts. Deputy FE Commissioners Steve Hutchinson and Andrew Tyley will set out key features of the guide, how to access the materials including two exemplars using a fictional case study with an opportunity for Q&A. This event is free to attend outside of the Learning Week ticket. 09:30-10:15 Behaviours of an inclusive mindset Facilitator: Shirley Williams, Leadership Coach and Consultant, Resolve Consultancy Our brain works in mysterious ways and if the brain feels excluded, that equals to distress. When the brain is in distress it feels threatened and the emotional part of the brain is amplified (which isn’t a nice place to be). This means if you aren’t actively going out of our way to include people then you’re probably accidentally excluding people – so we all have to work at it! We’ll get it wrong but that’s ok as we will learn. To develop an inclusive mindset, consider whether you have the habit of leaving out a certain population. Every day, each of us has many decisions to make, how we can connect to people and how we provide information. 12:30- 13:15 Supporting behaviour that challenges Facilitator: Laura Kerbey, Founder, Positive Autism Support and Training This session will include: • Behaviour - looking at the "whole picture" and different perspectives • Using “The Iceberg Theory" to analyse behaviour and identify solutions • Avoiding the conflict cycle and using assertiveness techniques • Simple strategies to support when behaviour challenges 16:00-16:45 Introduction to FE Finance and Funding Facilitator: Andrew Tyley, Consultant and leading expert on FE Funding, Tyley Associates This session will give an overview of FE finance, features of good practice and early warning signs of when things can go wrong. *** Tuesday 6 July 09:30-10:15 Cultivating curiosity to support learning and subjective wellbeing Facilitator: Bob Craig, Trainer, Coach, Consultant and Therapist, specialising in the FE sector This session will focus on three areas: • Student learning and outcomes: How can individuals and organisations deploy the power of curiosity to accelerate motivation, engagement and learning? • Professional learning: How can leaders within organisations create the conditions and culture for curiosity to flourish and why does this matter? • Wellbeing: What is the value of opening yourself to the world around you and within you, to support subjective wellbeing? 12:30-13:15 Understanding our unconscious bias: What will enable success Facilitator: Shirley Williams, Leadership Coach and Consultant, Resolve Consultancy We usually don’t see ourselves being biased but we can see it in others, they are very subtle and mostly accidental. Not many of us get up in the morning and say ‘oh I’m going to be biased today’; it is something that isn’t planned. There are over 150,000 biases and biases are also very adaptable which makes sense in our quick decision making – i.e. keeping us alive. 11:00-11:45 Being kind to yourself: The importance of self-compassion, taking breaks and sleep Facilitator: Penelope Aspinall, Mental Health Trainer, Charlie Waller Trust It is easy to be kind to others but often we find it harder to be kind to ourselves. Yet, treating yourself kindly is essential for maintaining good wellbeing and productivity. It is also very hard to care for other people if you are not caring for yourself. This session looks at three key ways we can look after ourselves; practising self-compassion, taking breaks and getting enough sleep. 12:30-13:15 Cracking the code – Inclusive coaching for success and progression Facilitator: Dr Maxine Room CBE, Equality, Diversity, Inclusion Coach, Mentor, Developer and Facilitator This session will look at the difference between coaching and mentoring and the benefits of each. • What is inclusive coaching and how can it make a difference to individuals and the organisations they work within? • What does success look like in a coaching relationship? • How do you get the most out of coaching? There will be 10 takeaways for career progression internally and externally and one lucky participant will receive a free 1 hour session with Dr Maxine Room CBE - coaching the gift you never knew you needed! 16:00-16:45 Assessment for Learning and Questioning in English Facilitator: Jonathan Kay, Head of Teaching, Learning and Assessment, Newcastle College Using questions to engage and assess students is one of the most effective tools in any teacher toolkit: this session will focus on how best to efficiently and effectively assess students in a range of contexts. Thursday 8 July 09:30-10:15 Communicating in a crisis – Best practice for colleges Facilitator: Ben Verinder, Managing Director, Chalkstream This session will help delegates develop their understanding of: • The essentials of crisis communication and the resources required • How to avoid common pitfalls for colleges facing a public difficulty • Managing traditional and social media during a crisis. 12:30-13:15 Tips to ensure your brainstorm doesn’t become a sigh-clone Facilitator: Jo Small, International Executive Coach and Trainer High workloads? Time pressures? Competing priorities? These challenges, plus the associated challenges of working through Covid, can all impact on our ability to develop creative pockets of time with our teams. Facilitator biographies (in alphabetical order) Andrew Tyley, Accountant and Director, Tyley Associates Andrew Tyley is a qualified accountant with over twenty years' experience in the Further Education sector, both as Finance Director and as College Principal for Walford & North Shropshire College. Previous employers include Coventry City Council (Head of Education Finance); PriceWaterhouseCoopers (Management Consultant); Adult Learning Inspectorate (Finance Director and Company Secretary) and Harper Adams University (Finance Director). Since 2014 Andrew has used his extensive experience of Further Education finance in a range of consultancy assignments including interim support for financial recovery/turnaround and merger project management/financial modelling. Andrew has delivered a range of training modules for AoC on FE finance, including the recent masterclass series for governors and new principals. Appointed in 2015 to the FE Commissioner’s team, Andrew was promoted to the role of Deputy FE Commissioner in 2016. In this capacity Andrew has led a number of formal interventions, stocktakes, diagnostic assessments and structure and prospects appraisals. Ben Verinder, Managing Director, Chalkstream Ben is managing director of Chalkstream, an agency delivering reputation and market research, management consultancy and public relations services to the education sector. Ben teaches a range of crisis and issues management courses for national and international clients and has provided risk, issues and crisis management for nearly twenty years. He is a CIPR Founding Chartered Practitioner and lead chartered status assessor, a judge on several education awards and a regular speaker on communication, reputation and market research in education. Ben is also a contributor to a range of public relations books, a published poet and author of the biography of adventurer Mary Burkett. His specialism is psychology in public relations practice and, more broadly, change management in education. Bob Craig, Trainer, Coach, Consultant and Therapist, specialising in the FE sector Bob Craig is a trainer, coach, consultant, and therapist, specialising in the FE sector. He set up his business in 2011 after fifteen years working in colleges. Jo Small, International Executive Coach and Trainer, Optima Training (UK) International executive coach and trainer providing lightbulb moments all over the world. From prisons to potting sheds, farms to factories, and warehouses to woodworking workshops, Jo has had a varied career which has seen her deliver coaching and training in diverse locations. Jo has 15 years’ coaching experience and 25 years plus in training. Whether it’s online or face to face, she develops highly interactive creative programmes with a coaching approach, including webinars; online team coaching; facilitated meetings; and online action learning sets. Her key goal is to switch on lightbulbs, and she does this by using a range of creative techniques that she keeps in her training and coaching toolbox. Jon Thedham, Management and Leadership Trainer, TDM Services Jon is an experienced consultant, facilitator and coach who has worked successfully for over twenty years with a wide range of clients from the Further Education, private and not-for-profit sectors. He has held senior management and marketing roles in the education, commercial and public sectors and has been involved in the design and delivery of the Association of College’s range of FE sector management development programmes specifically specialising in middle managers. He is also currently, at Stirling University, researching FE middle management development and how it can be enhanced and improved. In the last couple of years Jon’s other projects have include working on the Advanced Mentoring Programme and the writing of three ETF Guides supporting Advanced Practitioners and their managers. Jonathan Kay, Head of Teaching, Learning and Assessment, Newcastle College Jonathan Kay is former Head of English and maths who, as an experienced teacher, leader and author, has worked across a number of colleges and Secondary schools. a team previously nominated for a TES FE Award, and working as an Examiner and Lead English Expert for a leading exam board. Jonathan’s particular areas of expertise are English, TLA, change management and assessment. His book, Improving Maths and English and Further Education: A Practical Guide, is out now. Laura Kerbey, Founder, Positive Autism Support and Training Laura is the founder of Positive Autism Support and Training and KITE Therapeutic Learning and has been working with autistic children and young people for over 20 years. She started her teaching career as a lecturer in the Supported Learning Department of a large mainstream college and in 2002 Laura became the Autism Champion for the Surrey College Network. After enjoying the role for over a year, she became Assistant Head, then Head Teacher at an independent specialist school. In 2013 she founded Positive Autism Support and Training. She has a demonstrated track record of effective and efficient engagement in change management, improvement through quality success indicators, and transformation including the use of frontier technology and data science to bring about mutually agreed stakeholder strategies and plans. Penelope Aspinall, Mental Health Trainer, Charlie Waller Trust Penelope has been working freelance with Charlie Waller as consultant trainer for the Workplace programme and a trainer on the Universities and Colleges programme since August 2018. Immediately prior to joining Charlie Waller, she worked at the University of Bradford, first as Head of Counselling and then taking on the Disability Service as an additional area of responsibility in 2016, becoming Head of Disability, Counselling and Mental Health. Most recently, I produced the ‘Creating Inclusive Organisations’ online learning module for the ETF Governance Development Programme. Steven Hope, CEO, C-Learning Steve is the CEO of C-Learning. C-Learning is a google premier partner and a leading specialist in education focused cloud-based solutions serving several thousand clients in over 30 countries. Steve worked in Further Education for 17 years in many roles, with his last role being Head of Independent Learning at Leeds City College. Steve is a director of the Edufuturists who run a weekly podcast, as well as events discussing the future of education and gathering learnings from around the world.
