WETA Focus W e at WETA are proud to serve Greater Washington with locally focused television productions that are created exclusively for our community and illuminate the people, places and stories of the national capital area. This month, we are delighted to premiere our new WETA TV 26 documentary film, Washington in the ’90s — the latest production in our popular “Decades” local history series. The 1990s were a time of tremendous transformation in Washington, D.C., and this engaging film explores the political, social and cultural currents of the era in addition to the remarkable revitalization of the downtown area and its impact on the city. July also brings an Independence Day tradition and audience favorite, the broadcast of A Capitol Fourth live from the grounds of the U.S. Capitol and the National Mall. We have been very pleased to partner with Capital Concerts for decades to present this lively annual music and fireworks extravaganza to a nationwide audience; this year’s exciting lineup of performers will provide great entertainment. In other offerings, enjoy the summer season of mystery dramas, from Endeavour on Masterpiece and a new season of crime thriller The Tunnel to episodes of Maigret and Midsomer Murders. Our broadcasts also include journeys of discovery, visiting great mountain ranges and extreme environments around the globe, and closer to home, surveying culinary diversity in America’s cities and spotlighting the nation’s great monuments, engineering marvels and byways. Enjoy our July programming, and thank you for your support. New WETA TV 26 production premieres Tuesday, July 10 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD, repeating Friday, July 13 A new WETA history documentary, Washington in the ’90s, spotlights a fascinating decade of enormous transformation in the nation’s capital. The 1990s were a time of transition in the city that included a revitalization of the downtown landscape and dramatic social, cultural and technological change. WETA TV 26 examines these currents and the stories of Washington at the end of the 20th century in the engaging new 60-minute film. Through archival footage and original interviews, the program journeys through the decade, exploring how Washington, D.C. moved from a city in crisis to a city of opportunity. Doreen Gentzler, longtime news anchor at NBC4, narrates the documentary. Washington in the ’90s is the latest production in a series of local history films created by WETA TV 26, chronicling seminal events in Greater Washington by decade as part of WETA’s mission to produce television in service to the community. “I am so pleased to present this latest installment in our popular ‘Decades’ series, showcasing key moments in Washington D.C.’s history,” said Kevin Harris, WETA Vice President and Television Station Manager. “The 1990s were a pivotal period for the region, a time when the scars of the turbulent ’80s gave way to sweeping changes that transformed Washington into the thriving capital it is today.” Among the film’s themes are longtime Washington Mayor Sharon Pratt mayor Marion Barry’s shocking fall from power and the remarkable revival of his political career; social unrest and activism as the city’s demographic make-up shifted; the elections of mayors Sharon Pratt and Anthony Williams; the downtown area’s revitalization, anchored by longtime local sports team owner Abe Pollin’s construction of the MILLION MAN MARCH BY RICK REINHARD MCI Center; and a new wave of gentrification. Also in the spotlight are the rise of the alternative rock scene in D.C.; the region’s emergence as a technology hub during the early internet era; and the Washington Redskins’ early- decade success and challenging years that followed. The new film presents a wealth of perspectives via interviews with local residents. Notable Washingtonians featured include former mayors Sharon PRATT/BARRY & POLLIN/MOUNT PLEASANT BY DARROW MONTGOMERY Pratt and Anthony Williams; journalists Million Man March Cokie Roberts, Pat Lawson Muse and Tom Sherwood; Washington Redskins legends Darrell Green and Joe Jacoby; America Online founder Steve Case; music club owners Dante Ferrando and Seth Hurwitz; Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis; and former first lady of Washington, D.C. Ben Jones (Jason Hughes) continuing to investigate misdeeds in the picturesque, fictional English county of Midsomer. The drama is filmed in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire counties. In the programs, Barnaby is based in Causton, home to the Criminal Investigation Department. Behind the well-trimmed hedges, secrets hide and dangers lurk, and Barnaby and Jones must unpack the mysteries’ clues and red herrings. The final episode of Series 13 is John Nettles’ last appearance in the role: with the conclusion of this season, Neil Dudgeon is introduced as the next DCI Barnaby, John Barnaby, Tom’s cousin. The Tunnel, Series 3: Vengeance Sundays at 10:30 p.m. starting July 1 on WETA TV 26/HD T he award-winning British crime thriller The Tunnel returns for a third and final season, KUDOS FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED 2017 reuniting Stephen Dillane (Game of Thrones) in his International Emmy Award-winning role as British detective Karl Roebuck with Clémence Poésy (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) as French detective Elise Wassermann. In the new six-part series, the pair takes on a toxic and terrifying criminal duo whose mutual defining quality is an existential death wish. When the question posed by the couple — what is a life worth? — is directed at Karl, he is forced to confront an impossible, haunting choice. Set amid Brexit hysteria, Series 3 tackles an escalating refugee crisis and examines the increasing threat of terror occasioned by disenfranchised, exiled souls on whom society has turned its back. The drama is based on the original Swedish series The Bridge. Maigret, Series 2 Thursday, July 5 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD R owan Atkinson returns as bestselling novelist George Simenon’s French detective Jules Maigret in two 2017 adaptations airing back to back on July 5 on the heels of Series 1 in June. The drama returns to the war-damaged streets of 1950s Paris for two cases. In Night at the Crossroads, Maigret interrogates suspected murderer Carl Andersen for hours. But despite his best efforts, Andersen’s story never slips — he insists he’s innocent. So why was the body of a diamond dealer found on his property, in his car, killed with his gun? And why did he and his mysterious sister Else try to run away? In Maigret in Montmartre, Arlette, a stripper in one of the area’s seedy nightclubs, reports a conversation she overheard about an imminent murder, but her story is not taken seriously until tragedy strikes, and Maigret is called upon to find a killer. In Series 3, with her investigation agency well established, her skills are sought by local clients, including policeman DCI Adams (John Graham Davies), who calls upon Hetty to help in those sensitive cases that need her gentle touch. Aiding her are husband Robert (Derek Benfield) and assistant Geoffrey Shawcross (Dominic Monaghan).
