Fish & Hunt Premier Angling Algoma Walleye & Northern Pike. BY TROY LINDNER A lgoma Country offers incredible angling adventures from the shores of the Great Lakes, and up north into the deep picturesque wilderness. Algoma is known for many great outdoor adventures. And when it comes to fishing, trophy walleye and northern pike are at the top of the list. This region is located in the center of Ontario, making it accessible for travel from Minnesota to New York. There are many resorts peppered inland from White River all the way down Highway 17 towards Spanish. During the past four seasons of filming and travelling around Algoma, we can share some insight to help you decide on the perfect trip. One particular place where we filmed two episodes was in the northern portion of Algoma. It shines for both walleye and northern pike. WALLEYE There’s no doubt that walleye reign supreme in the inland lakes and rivers of Ontario. Algoma offers so many different opportunities for eager anglers of all levels. There are easy drive-to destinations with “housekeeping” options if you prefer to prepare and cook your own meals. 11 2022 ALGOMA TRAVEL GUIDE
These types of lodges offer packages where you only have to bring your appetite, clothing and fishing gear! These destinations are located on the many of the lakes in the region, some which have a thriving walleye population. You can catch them all season long, from shore lunch eaters up to 30 inches! Todd Mackie stayed at one of the fly-in lodges this past summer with his father for the second year in a row. They had an incredible bite. We have shared many of their photos on our Ontario Experience Facebook and Instagram accounts. Here are some reviews from their four days of fishing, two people: “That’s an awesome trip, a real memory maker, and a mandatory shore lunch of fresh-caught walleye is always a highlight. No restaurant can match the taste of the fillets and diced potatoes with the Algoma wilderness as a backdrop.” A couple of other fly-in lodges we have visited in northern Algoma also offer first-class hospitality and amazing walleye fishing. Of course, there are many other options throughout the region. If walleye are your target, then an Algoma experience is the answer! NORTHERN PIKE North of the border, the pike is maybe the second most popular fish after the famed walleye. Northern pike thrive in the cool waters throughout the region which also make their fillets delicious. The “smaller” eater-sized ones, in the 3-5 pound range, make a great alternative to walleye for shore lunch. Side note, pickled pike can go toe-to-toe with any pickled fish for taste and texture. The attitude of northern pike makes them fun to catch, which we can all agree on. Most shallow weed areas hold northern pike throughout the season. They aren’t shy to bite in the middle of a hot summer day when walleye fishing can be slow. During my trips on lakes that offer both, I like to go after walleye in the morning and evening, with a focus on a northern pike during the middle of the day. For lures, it can be really simple, from an inline spinner with number 3 to 5 blades to a 5-6” swimbait. Both are great because all you have to do is “cast and reel”. If there’s a pike around, they’ll follow or attack. Again, you have to like that type of aggressive attitude. Just like with walleye, Algoma offers the opportunity for all sizes, from a few pounds to 40 plus inches! There are many resorts and lodges across the region that have waters where both of these fish inhabit. The scenery of Algoma is simply, screen saver worthy, from the winter snow, into the blues and greens of spring and summer, and then the bright fall colours. This backdrop makes Algoma four seasons of fun!

Fish & Hunt Outdoor Getaway Getting the Most from a Fishing Lodge. BY JAMES SMEDLEY W ith more than her fair share of wilderness lakes and rivers, Algoma Country is rife with fishing lodges. They are dotted across a broad and diverse landscape that ranges from the expanse of the boreal forest to the rounded old mountains of the Canadian Shield. Not only is a lodge setting one of the best platforms for casting to our favourite species, it is also a conduit to experiencing wilderness through other means, like simply taking deep breaths of pine-charged air from wave- lapped shorelines of rock and cedar. In addition to first-class angling, a visit to a fishing lodge is loaded with opportunities. Here’s how to exploit those opportunities and enjoy the wilderness experience to its fullest. ANGLING First and foremost we must experience fishing. There’s a reason for the proliferation of fishing camps throughout northern Ontario and visitors to Algoma Country owe it to themselves If we want to sink even deeper into the untamed, we can opt to experience the superb angling enveloped within her woods for a fly-in lodge to soak in the solitude and true wilderness and waters. One of the most accessible ways of doing this is waters only accessible by floatplane. The comforts of home in to visit a drive-to lodge, where we can launch our own boat into the middle of the bush provide a delightful contrast between waters that can be surprisingly productive for species like trout, civilization and the wild. Touring RVing Algoma Two Great Lakes, One Trip to Remember. BY MARTIN LORTZ P ut down that coffee or, better yet, bring it with you as you step outside onto a white sand beach or the edge of a waterfall or a glass calm lake surrounded by northern Ontario wilderness. What are you talking about, you ask? Welcome to the RVing experience in Ontario’s Algoma Country. The RV might just be the perfect tool to travel the vastness of the Algoma region, the thousands of kilometres of road that dissects it, offering a way to get anywhere and, at the same time, experience the middle of nowhere. So, let’s get packing it’s time to explore! Along the Trans Canada Highway and the North Channel of Lake Huron, campgrounds offer pull-through sites, on-site stores and inviting swimming pools, perfect for a day or a few. Be sure to stop at the Spanish Municipal Marina and climb the stairs for a spectacular view from the Shoreline Discovery Trail. More views to be had in Elliot Lake, where you can drive your RV right up to the Fire Tower Lookout. At Lake Lauzon, enjoy a lovely public beach, washroom facilities, kids’ playground, and informative panels on the area’s history. Lake Lauzon is well known for its boating and fishing opportunities, including the elusive Muskie. If catching the big one is on your to-do list, local fishing guides will be happy to assist. The delightful main street in Blind River and the nearby Boom Camp Hiking Trails both will not disappoint. 41 2022 ALGOMA TRAVEL GUIDE
Highway 129 snakes its way north from Thessalon to Chapleau. The drive and scenery are exhilarating, with the Mississagi River on one side and a wall of rock on the other. Be sure the gas tank is topped up as the 200 or so kilometres are primarily wilderness. Around the halfway point, keep an eye out for the inconspicuous sign and entry to Aubrey Falls, perhaps the most spectacular waterfall in Algoma. The access road is narrow, but the parking area is sizeable, offering plenty of room to turn around. A short hike will get you to a bridge offering an impressive view of the gorge and falls, but with some poking around, there are better views to be had. In Chapleau, be sure to stop by Engine 5433 and a glimpse into the community’s railway heritage; this is also the location for the area’s tourism information office if you need any assistance. North of Chapleau, you’ll find campgrounds with waters edge campsites, no cell service, and gravel road access that requires some effort. But your effort is rewarded with starry skies, lake views and the kind of silence only offered by the off-the-beaten- path experience. Wawa is a perfect base camp to explore the area. While the local campground’s pull-through sites, swimming pool, laundry, and showers will keep up comfort during your stay, the area’s highlights at its doorstep will have you staying longer than expected. Of course, there is the Wawa Goose and ice cream at the local general store. But be sure to venture down to Wawa’s waterfront, enjoy a spectacular beach and a view to match, stroll along the boardwalk and learn the area’s mining history. The nearby Sandy Beach might be the most stunning beach along Algoma’s Lake Superior shore, and the cascading waters of Scenic High Falls of the Magpie River are well worth venturing down the gravel road. If kayaking or paddleboarding on Lake Superior is on your bucket list a local outfitter will be happy to make it happen. Making your way to Algoma’s northern reaches, with your home away from home always with you, there is no rush. Stop in for a photo op with Winnie-the-Pooh in White River, then turn north along Hwy 631. The winding road and the landscape here are remote and breathtaking; keep an eye out for black bears along the route. If you have no luck spotting the real thing, the Three Bears Statue in Hornepayne will have to do. Out of the way, Ontario Provincial Parks’ Nagagamisis and Fushimi Lake offer a chance to stop for a swim, picnic or a stay. There are more photo opportunities with animal statues in Hearst, this time wolves and moose at Gilles Gagnon Tourism Information Centre. Learn about the area’s lumberjacking history at the Heritage Sawmill Museum and visit the Rheault Distillery for a taste of some local spirits. Our stay at a family-run marina and And as always, Northern Hospitality is aplenty. Welcome to campground north of Hearst offered campsites overlooking the RVing Ontario’s Algoma Region. Campgrounds, parks, beaches, lake or wooded sites, with or without services (water, electricity, waterfall, lakes, and more, so much to see and do, and the RV sewage, washrooms, showers, laundromat). The on-site might be the best tool to experience it all. So, let’s get packing, restaurant serves up some impressive poutine. fire up that engine and let the good times roll! ALGOMACOUNTRY.COM 42
