STUDENT SUCCESS A Passion for Cooking Neil - Colours Cookery School COVER Neil has always had a love for cooking and after STAR taking early retirement, he decided that there was no better time to perfect his skills. He explained, “Balancing work and home life never gave me enough time to really explore my passion for cooking, so some three years ago, I took early retirement and decided that this was my opportunity for some me time.” After trying his hand at Spanish Delights at Colours Cookery School, he enjoyed it so much, that he has since completed six more cookery courses; A Taste of India, A Taste of Thailand, Successful Sauces, A Taste of Italy, An Introduction to Fishmongery and Artisan Bread Making. Neil said, “The value for money is exceptional - not only do you receive fantastic tuition, but the ingredients are also included and of high quality.” With experienced Chefs as Tutors and professional kitchens to work in, students get the most out of their course. Neil said, “The environment really gives you a taste of life in a professional kitchen and you get plenty of time to cook rather than just watch. All the Chefs have real-life experience in restaurant kitchens too and the stories they tell whilst teaching you really adds to the fun.” A key highlight for Neil during his many courses was finally perfecting his bread making skills on the Artisan Bread Making course. He explained, “I had been trying to bake my own bread for years but many a kilo of dough had ended up in the bin. The Chef gave us a fool proof recipe and method to follow. I am pleased to say, I am now a baker and we always have freshly home baked bread in our house.” Eager to continue to explore other cuisines and develop his skills, Neil has already booked on to his next course, Curries of the World. He said, “My confidence and repertoire have grown significantly since attending Colours Cookery School and I would recommend the courses to anyone looking to try something new or develop a hobby.” If you are interested in joining one of our Colours Cookery School short courses, you can book and pay online at sales.sthelens.ac.uk

Distance learning was the perfect choice for me, as I couldn’t commit to being in a classroom at the time. I was working six days a week and my shifts were never the same, as well as helping to care for my Nan. I was able to complete the course from the comfort of my own home, with the added bonus of full tutor support. I found the course extremely helpful; I have personally suffered from mental illness and this course almost became my own personal therapy. It has given me more of an understanding about myself, as well as the knowledge to help others. Completing this course has definitely helped Paul’s Story towards my career and I’m now pursuing a role as a Healthcare Assistant.”
MEET SOME OF OUR ADULT STUDENTS Joanne Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health “I studied the Level 2 Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health course during the lockdown period, as my daughter was suffering with anxiety and was receiving SEND support in school. I wanted to gain a better understanding of what she was experiencing and how best to help her at home, especially with the added pressures of lockdown. I really enjoyed the course and found the content so fascinating, that I completed it in just two weeks! The skills I have learnt have helped me to recognise the triggers of anxiety and put measures in place to support my daughter. Distance learning has given me the opportunity to study when I have the time - there is no pressure and I can fit studying online around Joanne’s Story my schedule.” Lee Level 2 Certificate in Team Leading “I had been seconded to the role of Team Manager, within the North West Ambulance Service and I wanted to complete a team leading course, to show my dedication to my ongoing professional development. The course itself was intense and quite challenging, however, the distance learning process kept me engaged and motivated to achieve the best outcome. The learning materials you receive are outstanding - they are in depth and give you an excellent background to start your learning experience. The tutors were always available for support and advice throughout the course. This course helped me to gain a permanent full-time Team Manager position and helped me Lee’s Story to build an excellent working relationship with my team.”
