Bibliotherapy Bibliotherapy is the use of literature to help people with mental, psychological, emotional, and social challenges. Early forms of Bibliotherapy have been used in psychiatric hospitals across America and Europe, and by the end of World War 1, many of the veteran hospitals were apply- ing Bibliotherapy to treat emotional trauma among veterans (“Brief history of Bibliotherapy” n.d, Para. 4). There are three types of Bibliotherapy : Self-Help Bibliotherapy, Books on Prescription, and Creative Bibliotherapy (McLaine,2012, Para 4). Poetry and prose is used in creative bibliotherapy. It is believed that making a connection with a special story helps people create better connections with their personal and emotional life (McLaine, 2012, Para. 7). There also have been several studies that show that Bibliotherapy has positive outcomes on wellbeing (McLaine, 2012, para. 3). Each week, a short story and poetry will be read aloud for a small group of participants for 1 to 1.5 hours, followed by a discussion period based on the material. They can feel free to share their thoughts, or may just listen (McLaine, 2012, Para. 21, 22). Meanwhile, for the groups with participants that live with various stages of dementia, there will be a version of the program that is shorter and there will be a facilitator there to assist participants (McLaine, 2012, Para. 24). It has been noted that enjoying texts and poetry can help with symptoms such as short term memory loss, drowsiness resulting from medication, and concentration. Based on the evaluations in care facilities, reading aloud for dementia patients can have positive effect on their wellbeing (McLaine, 2012, Para. 27). If you enjoy reading, and a good discussion, consider joining our Book Club this Winter session. See page 8 for details. Contributed by ALC Student Zahra Ghanbari 13
