current national Chief Perry Belgarde has decided not to run this time. The Treaty 6 Chiefs had a discussion about whether we support the AFN or not. We were given word that Treaty 8 does not support the process. We never came to a decision yet, however I pointed out to the Treaty 6 Chiefs that what I’ve learned in politics is that you have to be present at the discussion table. The AFN is a paid entity of the federal government but it is one table the government does speak at. So the elections are coming up and there are people running from Alberta running for national chief. They are going through nominations as we speak. Wednesday we did a Covid 19 town hall meeting. I want to thank Lowa Beebe who was the moderator. CFWE Radio was the host for this along with the Alexis Nakota Sioux so thank you to both of them. I am trying to get the word out for vaccinations. Thursday I was at the HUB meeting. Metal health is becoming an issue in our community due to the pandemic. Two issues we discussed was how do we get certain supports out to certain families and sometimes we have to go find people who go missing. The Treaty Chiefs met with Dr. Dina Hinshaw to get the latest update in the province. So we are part of the central zone. Information for on and off reserve First Nation people are: 16,633 Covid 19 cases 18 In ICU (Intensive Care Unit) 777 Active Cases 67 Hospitalized 143 Deaths Out of those 143 deaths, Samson lost 18 of those. So the message is everyone stay safe. The on reserve central zone Covid 19 statistics are: 409 Active Cases 7710 Recovered 80 Deaths 32 Hospitalized May 21, 2021 32 Communities with Cases So Alberta has some rules in place. If you have 30 active cases in your community you will be on Chief Vernon Saddleback update via the Samson Cree Nation Facebook page and his own Chief severe lock down conditions. Samson does not currently fall under that rule. One last important Vernon Saddleback Facebook page. statistic is about Vaccine Doses: 50.26% of Albertans have been vaccinated. We are shooting for that magic number of 70% vaccinations which will starve the Covid 19 virus of hosts. Then we can open Good morning everyone. I apologize for last week. My internet connection was not that great and the up. People ask me if we are going to have a pow wow this year. We might be able to if we reach that signal was dropped a few times and people let me know about it. I am going to talk about that later 70% vaccination rate. If you have not gotten vaccinated please do it when you can. I appreciate the on. It was kind of interesting how that worked out. Alberta Health Authority who let the Chiefs know what’s going on so we can tell the people about our current situation. May 7: I’ve posted before that we have been trying to get our own health clinic in Samson. I’ve arranged a meeting with FNIHB (First Nations and Inuit Health Branch) and our Maskwacis Moving on, I met with Rogers Communications and their Indigenous Representatives and they Ambulance Authority (MAA) about funding. The meeting went well and we are having another one on want to create partnerships to expand communications into rural Alberta. Basically, they want to get May 31. So the discussions are beginning. internet access out to the rural community. When I had my experience with my Facebook live stream freezing last week; this meeting came just in time. The background story is that the four nations I also did a rehearsal for a town hall meeting. Lowa Beebe has her own radio talk show with the filled out an application to the federal government for them to provide fibre optic internet service. Windspeaker Radio Network. It was broadcast on CFWE Facebook live. I was asked to sit on this The program is for the four nations including Pigeon Lake. Just to let you know laying down fibre panel to see if the technology worked properly and it did. optic cable is not cheap but that would give you high speed internet in the country side. To complete the project would cost 35 million dollars. The host has to pay 20% of the cost which is what the four Tuesday we had our regular council meeting. Right after that I had a meeting with the AOTC (Alberta nations would do. Samson would pay approximately 2 million to get high speed internet to the rural Organization of Treaty Chiefs). Then we met with the Treaty 6 Chiefs. We were talking about the areas. We have not heard back from the federal government but the project is still in progress. So upcoming Assembly of First Nations (AFN) national chief election which will be on July 7, 2021. Our Bruce Buffalo we are going to try and get you working with Rogers. We are in the middle of a pandemic right now and I’ve said it many times in my podcasts that if your struggling with anxiety problems, and this is what social isolation is doing to our people, please call the phone numbers provided. We are still trying to get mental health supports here in our community. Another item on our agenda is the Covid 19 long haulers. Long haulers are people who had Covid 19 but still have health problems for months later on. Eventually we will have to deal with this but right now I am working on the mental health issues in our community. Here is a shout out to Carmen Yellowbird and her team. I put the poster on my Facebook page so you can go see it if you want. I was in Lethbridge a few years ago and I ran into a nation member who was working for CP rail and he took this training that I am talking about. The opportunity has unfortunately expired but Carmen Yellowbird and her team did this for our community. I want to thank the Councilors who are working on this initiative for our members: I do believe it’s Councilors: Mario Swampy, Louise Omeasoo and Marvin Yellowbird but all the Councilors support this. The Samson Work Force and Training Development phone number is 780-585-3305. Give them a call about upcoming programs. The Maskwacis Employment Center was offering a Class 7 drivers license program and you can give MEC call about upcoming programs at 780-5854450 or 780-360-4423. I want to give a shout out to the Maskwacis Ambulance Authority, that’s Stu Schmidtt and the men and women who work there. They have gotten a fifty thousand dollar health project approved. Boehringer Ingelheim, a pharmaceutical company, and a native based health company gave 5 communities in Canada fifty thousand dollars each to start a diabetes research project. Maskwacis was picked out of one of the five so thank you for the hard work in getting that project here. With Community Wellness they will be doing a door to door survey for a cancer research project. The purpose is to reach out to those who have cancer, those who have had cancer and for caretakers who help people with cancer past or present. The project will find out what is working and what is not working for people who have cancer in our community. Surveys take about 10 to 15 minutes to complete and they can be done over the telephone. Covid 19 safety protocols will be in place. So that’s Community Wellness and they will be going door to door. Samson Communications Department @SamsonCreeNation 11
