Proudly Presents: The 20th Anniversary AATHP Travel Health Symposium & General Meeting June 3 & 4, 2016 Solara Resort and Spa Canmore, Alberta, Canada
Speaker Information and Topics Keynote Speaker: Dr. Prativa Pandey Medical Director – CIWEC Hospital and Travel Medicine Center, Kathmandu, Nepal Dr. Pandey attended medical school in New Delhi, India, and was residency trained in Internal Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. She became Board Certified in that specialty in 1984 and practiced for 10 years in the Boston area. She joined the clinic in 1993 and became the Medical Director in 1998. She is the past president of the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM) and is site director for the GeoSentinel project, an international cooperative project to monitor emerging diseases through research of travel related illnesses. She has worked one season as a Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) volunteer doctor in the Everest Region and currently serves on the medical board of the HRA. Presentations: 1. Pulmonary embolism masquerading as high altitude pulmonary edema at high altitude 2. Destination Nepal 3. Increasing resistance in diarrheal pathogens among travelers to Nepal and other destinations.
Friday Night Speaker: Dr. Christopher Van Tilburg, MD Occupational, Travel and Mountain Emergency Departments, Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital and Medical Committee, Mountain Rescue Association. Christopher Van Tilburg is a staff physician at Mountain Emergency Services, Emergency, and Occupational and Travel Medicine Departments at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, in Hood River, Oregon, USA. He is a member of Crag Rats, the oldest mountain rescue unit in the USA, the Mountain Rescue Association Medical Committee, and the International Society of Travel Medicine, for which he serves as editor of Travel Medicine News. He is author of 11 books including Mountain Rescue Doctor: Wilderness Medicine in the Extremes of Nature (St. Martins, 2007) and Adrenaline Junkie’s Bucket List: 100 Extreme Outdoor Adventures to do Before You Die (St. Martins, 2013). He has taught wilderness medicine, served as an expedition doctor, and worked as a medical relief physician in 70 countries in 5 continents. Dr. Van Tilburg shows images from mountain rescue cases in the USA, Canada, Tanzania, Switzerland, Peru, Andorra, Chile, Argentina and elsewhere to illustrate three key points. How we prepare for adventure travel with equipment, training, experience, personal wellbeing; how we mitigate risk during travel; and how we prepare for an accident once it occurs. The lessons described can be applied to many different areas of travel and travel medicine, not just mountain rescue. Dr.Henry Wu, MD, FRCPC Dr. Henry Wu is an Assistant Professor at the Emory University School of Medicine, and serves as the Emory TravelWell Center’s Co-Director. He is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and completed his post-graduate training in internal medicine and infectious diseases at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He also completed a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Dr. Wu previously served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer and Medical Epidemiologist at the Meningitis and Vaccine Preventable Diseases Branch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). His interests include central nervous system infections, tropical diseases, and infectious diseases epidemiology. Presentations: 1. Emerging and evolving infectious diseases and the Role of the traveler in translocation of disease. 2. Practical strategies for traveling and working safely in developing countries.
Dr. Arthur Diskin, MD, FACEP Vice President & Global Chief Medical Officer Royal Caribbean International Dr. Diskin attended college and medical school at the University of Miami. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Los Angeles County Medical Center/University of Southern California. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Diskin is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (FACEP), Past President of the Florida College of Emergency Physicians (FCEP), former Chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital (JMH), in Miami, Florida and past Chair of the Section on Cruise Ship and Maritime Medicine of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Diskin has served as a physician on board ships intermittently since the 1980’s and was a consultant to Carnival Cruise Lines from 1990-2008 and their Medical Director through 2008 when he came to Royal Caribbean. He co-developed the Institute of Cruise Ship Medicine (ICSM), open to physicians from numerous cruise lines while with Carnival Cruise Lines and has now created a similar program at RCI – the International Academy of Cruise Ship Medicine (IACSM). In his current role, he is responsible for recruiting, retaining and reviewing the credentials of the ship’s physicians and nurses, determining which medications and equipment to stock, developing medical evacuation and disaster management policies and advising the ships’ physicians as needed. He is also responsible for the clinical management of crew medical care on the ships and in their home countries, management of the CareTeam, the Crew Wellness program, and all Public Health related issues. Dr. Stan Houston, MD DTM&H FRCPC Professor of Medicine & Public Health, Director, Northern Alberta HIV Program Dr. Houston did his medical training in his native Saskatchewan and subsequently trained in Family Medicine, Tropical Medicine, Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease. He practiced primary care in northern Saskatchewan and rural Lesotho, Africa and taught and practiced at the University of Zimbabwe for 4 years. He consulted for over a decade with the National TB Program of Ecuador and for a similar time as a TB consultant to Doctors without Borders in South Sudan. Locally, he practices Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease at the U of A and directs the Northern Alberta HIV Program. Other activities have included CATMAT membership, The Canadian TB Standards, involvement in starting the New Canadians Clinic and of course, acting as an advisor to Travellers Health Services and AATHP. Dr. William Stauffer, MD, MSPH, FASTMH Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics, Division of Infectious Diseases & International Medicine, University of Minnesota Dr. Bill Stauffer is a Professor Departments of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases. He also holds appointments in the Pediatrics, Infectious Diseases & in the School of Public Health. He is clinical faculty in Infectious Diseases HealthPartners Specialties Center/Regions Hospital. He is an expert in travel and tropical medicine working in clinical medicine, surveillance and policy development. He serves as the lead medical advisor to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of Global Migration and Quarantine (Immigrant, Refugee, Migrant Health Branch) where he works on issues of human mobility and how it effects human health (e.g. travel medicine, refugee & immigrant health). He Co-Directs the UMN/CDC Global Health Course (). He works extensively overseas in clinical medicine education, research and in public health, most recently in Tanzania, Uganda, Thailand, Malaysia. His research areas have included infectious disease surveillance, malaria diagnostics, neglected tropical diseases, cost evaluation of public health programs, avian influenza, strongyloidiasis and viral hepatitis. He acts as an advisor to the European Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization, and chairs an Inter-Governmental Refugee Health Work-Group aimed at aligning medical management of refugees. Neglected Tropical Diseases “Ask the Expert” Question and Answer Panel An interactive question and answer session to help resolve common queries and share knowledge and expertise.
