A message from Mayor Peter Mercurio and the East Aurora Village Board We want you to have this guide of useful information about the many ways Village government partners with citizens for a clean environment. To meet this goal, the Village enlists the help of a private contractor to collect trash and recycling. How We Can Beginning June 1, Modern Disposal Services Inc. will be our new contractor providing trash and Reduce Waste recycling collection services throughout the Village of East Aurora. and Improve This change should be seamless to you. Yardwaste Collection Brush and Tree Limbs are collected weekly by the Village of East Aurora Department of Public Works. Collection begins the second Monday in April and runs through the Second Friday in October. During this time, Brush and Tree Limbs can also be dropped off at the DPW located at 400 Pine Street, Saturdays between 9 am and 2 pm. Fall Leaf Collection Fall Leaf Collection is provided by Village of East Aurora Department of Public Works. Collection begins the second Monday in October and ends the Fourth Monday in November. Village of East Aurora 2019 Waste Collection Guidelines Guidelines for Trash & Recycling Collection Time: All garbage and recyclables shall be placed at the curb for collection by 6 a.m. on your scheduled day, but not sooner than 18 hours prior to collection date. All streets are covered only once. Receptacles shall be removed from the curb within 12 hours after being emptied. Size and Weight: All garbage shall be placed in bags or cans not to exceed 32-gallon capacity and/or 60 pounds. Any material not in cans or bags should be securely tied in bundles no more than four feet in length. Item Limits: Each week, a limit of four items of acceptable refuse and waste materials will be collected per unit. Cart Purchase: Village of East Aurora residents may purchase a 95 gallon wheel cart (tote) for waste and recycling by calling Modern’s customer service department at 800-330-7107. Carts can be purchased using your credit card and will be delivered to your home. Use of a trash cart (tote) will replace the four (4) bag/can limit. Residents cannot use the trash cart (tote) in combination with cans and bags unless a bag tag is purchase and affixed to a bag placed next to the cart (tote). Accepted Items: Household trash is accepted for collection, including waste resulting from handling, storage, preparation or serving of foods, light bulbs, empty paint cans (latex only), non-recyclable items and some yard waste. Not Acceptable Items: The following items are not acceptable curbside: televisions, computers, monitors, cell phones, tires, pesticides, solvents, motor oil, flammable materials, asbestos, automotive batteries, paint, pool chemicals or propane tanks. Bulk Waste Items: In addition to the four items listed above, once each week, each unit may discard one bulky item, such as an item of furniture, white goods. A mattress and box spring are considered one bulk item. Appliances that contain refrigerant are not accepted (i.e., refrigerators, a/c units, dehumidifiers, etc.). Recycling: Place recyclables out weekly on the same day as garbage collection. Place all acceptable material into recycling bins and follow the recycling guide contained in this brochure. Plastic bags of any kind are Not Acceptable. Additional recycling bins may be purchased at Village Hall. Extra Items (over the limits): Collection limits are strictly adhered to. Residents have the option for extra bags to be picked up by purchasing bag tag stickers for $5 each from the Village Hall. Stickers may be placed on one (1) additional 32-gallon bag, tagged items will be picked up with weekly garbage. Tags must be visible to the collection crews. Yard Waste: Plant clippings, branches and twigs will be picked up as part of the four-item limit, as long as they are placed properly in suitable containers, or tied and bundled less than four-feet in length and weigh less than 70 lbs. Village Public Works crews perform curbside chipping and collection of brush and tree limbs in the Spring and Summer and in the Fall leaves are collected with a vacuum truck. Brush and Tree Limb Collection Village Public Works crews collect brush and tree limbs left curbside each week from mid-April through mid-October. Tree limbs should be if possible, placed with the cut ends facing the road. Only brush generated by Village residents will be collected. Contractors performing work on Village properties must remove their own brush and other yard waste debris. Fall Leaf Collection Village Public Works crews collect leaves raked curbside each fall. To avoid flooding and snow removal problems, rake leaves to the curb only. Leaves must not be raked into the street. Bagged leaves will not be collected. Leaves must be piled to within three feet of the curb or edge of road, otherwise they will not be collected. Leaves will be vacuumed beginning mid-October through mid-November, weather permitting. Call the Department of Public Works at 652-6057 with any questions. Grass Clippings A minimal amount of containerized grass or lawn clippings will be collected along with regular trash. Containers of yard waste are considered part of the four (4) item weekly limit. Grass clippings are also accepted on a drop-off basis at an attended, fenced area near the DPW garage on the Pine Street Extension, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays from mid-April through mid-October. Residential Home Health Care Waste There are several secure facilities throughout Erie County at which residents can drop off “Sharps”.
