How to apply Ready to take the first step in your UTS journey? Here’s what you need to know. Getting in When it comes to getting in to UTS, how we assess your application depends on the type of applicant you are: – If you’re a recent school leaver, we’ll look at your selection rank (a combination of your ATAR/IB score plus any adjustment points you receive). – If you’re a non-recent school leaver, we’ll look at your selection rank, which may come from your ATAR/IB score or post-secondary studies, plus any relevant work experience or additional selection criteria required for your course. – If you’re an Indigenous student, you can apply to UTS via the standard UAC process or through the UTS Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research. The Jumbunna team will assess your application and either offer you a place in your preferred degree or in a pathway program that will prepare you to get the most out of uni life. Please note: This guide is not intended for international students. Please visit uts.edu.au/international for more information on how to apply. NO PRE-REQUISITES The good news? There are no pre-requisites for UTS courses, which means you can apply for any course that interests you. However, some courses have an assumed knowledge component, which means you’ll need to brush up on the expected skills and expertise if you want to do well in your studies. Need a bit of help? UTS offers bridging courses in key areas to help you get the knowledge you need. 20
Getting in Applying is as easy as 1,2,3,4 1 Choose a course Want to study at UTS? The first step is choosing the right course. Check out the course information pages of this guide (pages 29–43), as well as the UTS website. Got questions? Bring them to a UTS faculty event, information session or to UTS Open Day – it’s your best opportunity to explore course and career options. 2 Check your eligibility Admission requirements and additional selection criteria vary from course to course, so make sure you understand what’s required for your chosen 3 Apply through UAC Lodge your application and any additional documents via the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). When we assess your application, we’ll consider your ATAR plus other criteria such as academic performance in certain HSC subjects, disadvantageous circumstances, or identification as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Admission pathways Didn’t get the selection rank you were hoping for? Admission pathways are another way to get into your preferred course. UTS pathways include TAFE courses, diplomas and other formal qualifications that can get you where you want to go. UTS PATHWAYS Enrolling in another UTS undergraduate degree can eventually lead you back to your first-choice course. Pick a UTS similar course with a lower selection rank, study for a year full time*, and then re-apply via UAC for another shot at undergraduate your dream degree. You’ll be assessed on your highest rank, which takes into consideration your ATAR as well as degrees any other studies you may have completed. You could also be eligible for recognition of prior learning. Leap into the second year of your chosen UTS degree** when you complete a higher education diploma at UTS UTS College College. As the premium pathway provider to UTS, UTS College offers diplomas in business, communication, diplomas design and architecture, engineering, information technology and science. Diplomas are designed in collaboration with UTS, and you’ll attain the same educational outcomes as a first-year undergraduate student. Jumbunna Unistart is a unique 12-month program for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students. You’ll build UTS Jumbunna confidence and basic academic skills in writing, mathematics and selected subjects from your chosen degree. Unistart Once you’ve completed the program, you’ll progress into undergraduate studies at UTS and get recognition of prior learning for the subjects you’ve already done. A two-year program for senior high school students of our U@Uni partner schools. Beginning at the end of Year 10, U@Uni the Academy introduces you to the uni experience, with tutoring and additional support to develop skills to succeed Academy at uni and beyond. Once you’ve successfully completed the program, you’ll be offered a place to study here at UTS. EXTERNAL PATHWAYS Completing an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma at TAFE or a private college can prepare you TAFE or private to re-apply to your preferred UTS degree. In some cases, you may be able to choose a graded diploma (where college diploma you get grades for individual subjects) instead of a competency-based diploma (where you either pass or fail), making your application more competitive for UTS courses with high selection ranks. Tertiary If you’ve completed a tertiary preparation certificate (TPC) or a foundation studies program, it can count towards preparation your UAC application and will convert to a qualification rank. Almost all courses at UTS will consider a NSW TAFE TPC and foundation and other completed tertiary preparation courses from Australian institutions. studies The STAT test is a multiple-choice ATAR alternative that’s accepted for admission to many UTS courses. STAT test The requirements? You’ll need to have turned 20 by March 2022 and have obtained your STAT results within the three years prior to the year you’re planning to start your degree. A Limited ATAR is calculated using the results from your best five HSC units, rather than the 10 required for a standard ATAR. UTS accepts Limited ATARs for all undergraduate courses except scholarship and accelerated Limited ATAR nursing courses. But take note: to be eligible, you need to be at least 20 years of age in the year you completed your HSC and taking between 5–9 units of ATAR courses, including at least one unit of a Category A English course. * Provided you meet matriculation, some specific courses allow less than a year of study - FASS, Business, Design, Health, Science ** Based on successful completion of a diploma with the required grade point average (GPA) and depending on the course you choose.
