Welcome to

                                    The Join the Pioneers
                                 “Madness” of Imagination, Spirit,
                                                                               and Performance

It’s a divine madness that began over one hundred years ago. We have an amazing story to tell – a story that has
no end – and hopefully, never will. As the story unfolds into our second century, we welcome you to join us. You will
play an integral part in honoring our legacy and staging our future.

In 1913, two young graduates of Smith College came to the frontier mountain town of Steamboat Springs, Colorado
with a mule named “Tango.” The town was populated with people primarily interested in mining and ranching, and
it was Charlotte Perry and Portia Mansfield’s vision to explore and teach “natural dance forms” and artistic
expression “close to creatures and out-of-doors.” This dream compelled them to found Perry-Mansfield in this
spectacular mountain setting.

From humble beginnings in a few rustic cabins and some very lean years when the “scenery was the salary,”
Charlotte and Portia nurtured Perry-Mansfield into one of the premier performing arts schools and camps in the
country.

In 1965, Charlotte and Portia gifted the camp to Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. For twenty-five years,
Stephens College continued to provide a summer program, rich with talent, creativity and challenge.

In 1990, Stephens College announced plans to sell the historic camp. Perry-Mansfield staff and alumni, as well as
the city of Steamboat Springs banded together to bring it home. The Friends of Perry-Mansfield, Inc. was formed,
and continues camp operations today.

Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School & Camp is known for nurturing creative and performing artists, and their
students, by focusing on an immersive educational experience, camping and equitation. The camp was one of the
early pioneers of modern dance, as well as dance therapy and physical therapy, and spearheaded the
development of children’s theatre, the use of multi-media, and theatre-in-the-round. In camping, it helped initiate
the studies of survival skills, counselor-in-training programs and standards for equitation.

Some of the nation’s first master classes, artist-in-residence programs, national dance tours and formal classes in the
creative arts took root at Perry-Mansfield. In its 100+ year history, the camp has inspired distinguished performers,
teachers, and a wealth of educated audiences and patrons of the arts. Perry-Mansfield’s campus is on the National
Register of Historic Places.

We are glad to welcome you to the Perry-Mansfield family and hope that you will be as challenged and inspired as
all those who have passed through our gates before you. Congratulations! You are about to become part of the
2rich history of Perry-Mansfield.

General Information
Campers Bank We ask parents to send campers with a prepaid
debit card or personal debit card in order to manage their money
                      while here at camp. Money will be needed for Saturday town trips;
meals out, along with any other off campus activities such as movies
or bowling. Laundry can be done at the laundromat on Saturday, or
through our service weekly at the cost of $1.67 per pound. (Campers
should be reminded not to put wet items in their laundry bags!)

Dance Shoes Students must remember to bring correct footwear
for each class they plan to take. Once the student gets here there is
no way to purchase dance shoes.

Food Service All meals are served buffet style in the Main Lodge
dining hall. Students are responsible for clearing their own dishes.
Healthy snacks are provided in the dining hall between meals. If your
child has a special dietary need, please let us know so we can discuss
                      it.

Lost & Found Perry-Mansfield is not responsible for items that are lost
during a students stay at camp. Please speak with your child about
the importance of keeping track of his/her possessions. Lost and found
items are only kept until September 1st. Any lost and found items
remaining are then donated to local charities.

Mail Mail is delivered daily. Letters are sorted alphabetically and
placed in the student box located outside the main office after 3pm.
Outgoing mail is collected in the Camp Store. UPS delivers at the office
daily. All packages MUST be opened in the presence of a staff
                      member.

Medical Care Students are not permitted to keep ANY medication
(including vitamins and herbal supplements) in their possession during
their stay at camp. Any medication, prescription or over-the-counter,
must be turned over to the nurse during check-in and will be dispersed
as prescribed or recommended by physician/parent on a daily basis.
This is a mandate set forth by the Colorado State Child Care Licensing
                      Board.

Parental Visitation We know it is tempting to visit your child and
spend time in beautiful Steamboat Springs, however, visits remove
campers from their friends, their creative free time, and interferes with
the independent experience of camp. Campers are allowed one
family visit per session. Family members or friends over the age of 21
will only be able to check-out a student if written permission is
received from the parent or legal guardian during camp office hours
at least 24 hours in advance. All students must be checked out at the
camp office and inform their counselors prior to leaving campus.
Parents are not allowed to take their children off campus during
classes or rehearsals. PLEASE NOTE: Saturday is the best time to visit.

Phone Calls Campers are allowed to call home on Saturdays while
in town. Students can use their personal cell phones, calling cards,
phone cards or call collect to do so. Please note that your child is not
allowed to make any additional phone calls unless it is an emergency
and permission has been granted by senior management.

Searches/Raids Perry-Mansfield reserves the right to search cabins
and personal property if there is suspicion of illegal activity.

Laundry Students may send their laundry to our laundry service
which is picked up once weekly and returned washed and folded the
following day at the cost of $1.67 per pound. (Campers should be
reminded not to put wet items in their laundry bags!) Laundry can also
be done at the laundromat on Saturdays. 9

Hiking Students and counselors may enjoy day hikes to Fish Creek Falls and Soda Creek.

Town Students and counselors spend Saturday afternoons in the quaint town of Steamboat Springs – relaxing, spending
time with friends, shopping, enjoying a meal out, etc. While in town students are expected to stay in their assigned activity
group chaperoned by their counselor.

Swimming Students may go to the local swimming pool which is equipped with an Olympic-sized pool, a warm water
pool, natural hot springs and a water slide. Certified lifeguards are on duty and counselors provide additional supervision.

Fourth of July Parade Independence Day is BIG in Steamboat Springs. Perry-Mansfield students take an active role in
the town parade – creating their own songs and dances Due to the creativity and spunk of our students, we have a long
history of taking 1st place in the Parade competition! (Be sure to bring blue denim shorts and comfortable shoes for parade
day - a costume t-shirt will be loaned to you for performance.)

**We ask that students bring some extra spending money for trips to town which might include the pool,
bowling, the movies, a meal out, a special treat, etc.
What
                                                         to
                                                          Bring…
Perry-Mansfield lies at 7,000 feet above sea level resulting in chilly mornings, warm afternoons, and cool evenings – with a
mix of frequently cold nights and occasional rain. Daytime temperatures range from 55 – 90 degrees, with the sun
becoming quite hot midday. Evening temperatures cool off to between 40 – 55 degrees. Students attending sessions in
June should come well prepared for occasional cold nights and pack extra blankets, etc. This is an active camp and
students change clothes frequently. Students should bring enough clothing to last two weeks. Students do their own
laundry at a laundromat in town every Saturday, or they may opt to have their laundry done for them once weekly at the
cost of $1.67 per pound. (Emerging Artists students will not be brought to the laundromat, and are asked to either bring
enough clothing to last the session, or bring money for the laundry service.)

Students must put their names on everything! Each item must be individually marked. This includes ballet shoes, clothing,
flashlights, towels, etc. We suggest that students make a complete list of items brought and tape it into the top of their
footlocker. This makes final packing much easier and ensures that each camper retrieves all of his/her possessions when
leaving camp. Perry-Mansfield is not responsible for lost items.

CLOTHING
Everyday clothes and shoes Everyday attire should be casual, practical and comfortable; jeans, shorts, and t-shirts, cotton
sweatshirts, long sleeve cotton shirts, several warm sweaters or fleeces, several pairs of cotton and wool socks, two pairs of
flannel pajamas, one warm bathrobe and a warm jacket (essential.) Bring a poncho and/or raincoat and hat. Students live
informally and out of footlockers/duffels, so please pack accordingly.

Choose sneakers, hiking boots, and/or sturdy sandals (like Tevas) for the paths and roads around the camp. Bring warm,
leather-soled bedroom slippers for cabin wear and flip-flops for showers. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended for hiking.

Riding Clothes and Shoes Camp riding clothes are jeans and/or riding pants, riding boots (shoes with a sturdy heel and toe
– NO sneakers) and a long sleeved cotton shirt. All students are required to wear riding helmets. Bring your own if you have
one, otherwise Perry-Mansfield will provide one. Students will not be able to ride unless they are wearing riding shoes with
sturdy toes and elevated heel. **We do have riding boots to borrow, but cannot guarantee sizes.

Dress Clothes Two nice outfits for performances are suggested.

DANCE Clothes and Shoes Leotard and tights or other form fitting dance wear are standard dress for all age groups in all
dance classes. Ballet shoes (pink or black) are required for ballet class, and jazz shoes for jazz class. Please also bring
character shoes, pointe shoes (should you intend to take pointe), and dance sneakers if you would like to take hip-hop
(offered only to EA students.) At least two dance outfits are suggested, one of which should be fully black (black leotard
and tights.) Dancers should also bring a nude leotard for performance. Dancers should bring multiple pairs of shoes and
tights (some for class, some for performance.) Most students (including theatre) will take at least one dance class.

THEATRE Clothes and Shoes Students need to bring sneakers, character shoes (if you have them) or jazz shoes, and clothing
that they can easily move in. Also, a white t-shirt and a general black outfit (jeans, t-shirt, blouse, skirt, dress, etc.)

CLASS MATERIALS
DANCE Equipment Tape, knee pads, yoga mat or large towel, video camera, GoPro, Flip, iPad, or other recording device
(for Dance on Camera class.) Class size limit is 10. If you are currently using an ace wrap or brace, please bring them.

THEATRE Classroom Materials Notebook(s), Pens, Pencils with erasers, highlighters, 2” 3-ring binder, vocal recording device
(which is NOT able to access the internet OR access wifi.) Please note: cell phones are NOT permitted as a recording
device. **ALL Theatre Students (EA, YAI and PPI) MUST come prepared with a song and a monologue for class and show
placement auditions. (It is fine to use the same material presented to us in your initial audition for P-M.)

MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS
Barrettes and Hair Bands These items should be brought in great supply. Dance teachers must see the face and neck completely.

Flashlight This is a necessity! Don’t forget to bring extra batteries.

Toiletries Bath towel and wash clothes, soap, soap dish, toothbrush, toothpaste and an unbreakable cup are needed. A zippered
waterproof case or other type of holder is necessary for transporting toiletries to and from the bathroom. Other handy items include
a sewing kit and a laundry bag.

Sleeping Bag Colorado nights can get cold, so come prepared with a warm sleeping bag. An old sheet will serve as a liner; this will
preserve the sleeping bag and make laundry easier. Bring two pillowcases, a pillow and an additional twin fitted sheet to place
over the slippery plastic mattress cover. Camp provides single or bunk beds.

Eyeglasses Eyeglasses can easily be broken and contact lenses can be lost. Bring the address to which you’d write for a quick
replacement by mail.

Insect Repellant For mosquitoes and flies.

Lotion The climate in Colorado is very dry. All students should bring lotion and use it daily to prevent dry skin and itching.

Medication Students should bring any prescribed or over-the-counter medications for their stay at camp. Physicians should note
prescribed medications and dosages on the Health Form. All medications must be given to the camp nurse upon check-in,
including Tylenol, Ibuprofen, vitamins, laxatives, herbal medications, cough drops, etc. An insurance card or copy is necessary for
students with pre-existing illnesses (asthma, allergies.) Parents are responsible for all medication refills while the student is at camp.
Medications can be mailed to camp, PERRY-MANSFIELD, ATTN: CAMP NURSE 40755 COUNTY ROAD 36, STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO

Water Bottle This is a necessity! Students may bring their own water bottles or purchase one at the camp store. Altitude sickness is a
real and serious concern. Campers must be sure to consume as many caffeine-free liquids as possible, especially if the student
goes tubing or rafting.

Sunglasses The Colorado sunshine is very intense; it is important to wear eye protection.

Sunscreen Students should bring sunscreen that is at least SPF15. Sunscreen MUST be labelled with student’s name.

DETAILED CAMPER RULES
To help us provide a safe campus, please ensure you and your camper read and
understand the rules and regulations outlined below.

   DRUGS, ALCOHOL, & SMOKING
   • Perry-Mansfield prohibits students from possessing or consuming drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes of any form, at
anytime, during their course of study with us. Failure to comply with this policy will result in immediate
expulsion from camp, and possible legal involvement.
   • ALL medications - including prescription, over the counter, and vitamins, must be kept in the infirmary at all
     times.
   • Perry-Mansfield is a smoke-free, and 100% fire-free camp. (No candles, etc.) Due to an extremely dry
climate, and a significant number of trees on campus, smoking, candles, etc. are a serious fire hazard.
Campers should not be in possession of matches or lighters.

   CARE PACKAGES & FOOD
   • Absolutely NO food is allowed in campers’ cabins, as storing food in the cabins may attract wildlife which
could cause a serious safety risk. DO NOT bring or send food to camp.
   • ALL care-packages containing food will be confiscated - no questions asked.
   • To ensure food is not received, all care packages must be opened in the company of a counselor.
   • If food is received, it will be disposed of, and the cost of said food will NOT be reimbursed to the sender.
   IPODS & MP3 PLAYERS & VOICE RECORDERS
   • Campers are allowed to have iPods, mp3 players, and voice recorders, but may only use them when expressly
required for class, or in the privacy of their cabin.
   • ONLY iPods, mp3 players, and voice recorders that are not able to access the internet (no wifi capabilities at
all) are allowed. (ie. If there is ANY way for the device to access the internet, it should be left at home!)
   • THEATRE students are strongly encouraged to bring an Mp3 voice recorder for classes and rehearsals.
There are many options available on Amazon. Click here for an example.

   CELL PHONES
   • ALL phones must be kept at the office at all times.
   • Phones will ONLY be handed out on Saturdays for trips to town. (ie. Students will only be able to place calls
     on Saturdays.)

   CABIN RESPONSIBILITIES
   • Be respectful of your bunkmates. Campers are expected to keep their cabins and bathrooms clean.
   • Campers who do not help in their daily chores of cleaning will lose privileges.
   • To encourage cleaning and fun, themed, cabin inspection contests will take place every Sunday.
   • Please note, we reserve the right to conduct random cabin inspections where personal property will be
searched in order to confiscate illicit items. (These inspections can take place at ANY time, even outside of
     the weekly Sunday inspections.)

   LAPTOPS, IPADS, KINDLES, TABLETS, ETC…
   • Please do not bring any digital devices to camp (laptops, iPads, kindles, tablets, Apple Watch, etc.)
• These devices will be sent home (at the cost of the camper.)
ALARMS
• Continuous ringing of bells could indicate an emergency. Campers should head to the horse corral
immediately, and remain silent once there in order to hear safety instructions.
• When walking to the horse coral, walk quickly - but do not run - and always stay to the RIGHT of the road.
• Once you arrive at the horse coral, get in your cabin groupings.
BEDTIME!
• Camp quiet hours begin at 10pm (meaning campers must be “quiet” in common areas, in cabins, when
passing staff and faculty cabins, etc.)
• “Lights out” are when all campers must be IN their cabins ready to go to sleep. Students must remain in
their cabins for the rest of the night.
• If these times are violated, all campers who reside in the cabin will have lights out pushed back by 30
  minutes. (Team work!)

Bedtimes are dependant on camp-programming, but the following times typically apply:
EA lights out is strictly at 9.30pm
YAI lights out is strictly at 10.30pm
PPI lights out is strictly at 11pm

ATTENDANCE POLICY
• ALL students are required to attend ALL of their scheduled classes & rehearsals. (This is why you are here at
  Perry-Mansfield!)
• Rehearsal schedules will be posted on the call board outside the main office.
• Students who must be late to class, or who need an excused absence, are required to have permission from
  the nurse or senior management.
• Students who are late, or who skip classes or rehearsals without written permission, will be sent to the office,
and may be removed / cut from productions.
• Unless excused by the nurse or senior management, you must attend all camp-wide activities and events,
parade rehearsals, etc. (This is part of camp-community.)

LEAVING CAMP
• Campers are under NO circumstance allowed to leave campus grounds unless accompanied by a staff
  member.
• All students must be checked-out at the camp office if they are leaving campus with family or family friends.
• Should a student leave campus alone, or without being checked-out, they may be expelled from Perry-
  Mansfield without refund.
**For details and rules regarding checking out, see “Visitors from Home” below.

VISITORS FROM HOME
• Parents are allowed to visit once per session.
• You will be allowed to sleep-out with your parents for one night only during this one visit.
• Your parents must send written permission for you to be checked out with another family member or friend.
• Parents are not permitted on camp other than their one visitation day, and on designated open-class days,
performance days, etc. When parents visit they are expected to meet you at the office and spend time with
you there or off campus. They are not allowed to watch classes, be in cabins, eat meals in the dining hall, etc.
(Parents will have plenty of time to tour camp and see your cabin on your open-class day.)
• If students are leaving camp with parents, they MUST sign out with their Head Counselor.
• When students return to camp, they must let the Head Counselor know they have returned.

                                                                                                                     15
• Visits and sleep-outs must NOT conflict with classes, rehearsals, or mandatory activities. If visits conflict,
senior management and faculty reserve the right to remove / “cut” campers from productions. As such,
parents are required to send written notification of their visit at least 24 hours in advance.
     • As SATURDAY is the day off, it is the suggested day for visits!

     PETS
     • Students are not permitted to bring or obtain pets while on camp.
     PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION
     • Public/private displays of affection are prohibited.
     REGARDING FRIENDSHIPS
     • Perry-Mansfield emphasizes friendships at camp rather than “relationships” and we do not allow PDA
(public/private displays of affection) that go beyond friendship. Exclusive relationships - however - have the
potential to harm the community by creating boundaries between people. For this reason, exclusive
relationships, whatever their nature, are discouraged as they disrupt the cohesiveness of a positive and
productive community. Intimate contact and sexual relationships are prohibited for the reasons stated above,
as well as for health considerations. Campers will be dismissed for inappropriate sexual behavior.

     CAMPUS SECURITY
     • The camp gate is locked nightly at 9pm.
     DINING HALL
     • Students are allowed to go in the dining hall to get “between meal snacks” provided by the kitchen, but
students should not loiter in the dining hall between mealtimes.
     • Snacks will be left in the dining hall itself. The kitchen area, and the walk-in fridge, are off-limits.
     • As cabins are attached to the dining hall, it is important to be quiet in the dining hall after 10pm.
     • Students should not enter the dining hall for meals until our cook welcomes you in by ringing the bell.
(Students should NEVER ring the bell unless asked.)
     • Students should cleanup after themselves at meals - wipe their place, put their dishes in the kitchen, etc.
     • Please let kitchen team and our nurses know of any food allergies.
     TRIPS TO TOWN
     • Saturdays are spent in the town of Steamboat Springs!
     • Shoplifting and stealing are not tolerated at Perry-Mansfield or in the city of Steamboat Springs. If a camper
is found guilty of shoplifting or stealing they will be expelled from camp with no refund. Perry-Mansfield
reserves the right to press charges if appropriate.
     • Campers will be assigned a specific van (ie. Van #3) which they must ride for the duration of the summer on
each trip to and from town and activities.
     • Cell phones will be given out IN the camp vans when leaving for town. You MUST return your phone once
you get back ON the van to return to camp. As such, there is no reason why a student should be in
possession of their cell phone while on the Perry-Mansfield campus.
     • Please remember that while you are in the town of Steamboat Springs you are acting as ambassadors of
Perry-Mansfield. Please act accordingly. We reserve the right to limit student visits to town based on
       behaviour.
     • While in town students are expected to stay in their assigned activity group chaperoned by their counselor.

     CAMP BOUNDARIES
     • Members of the opposite sex are not allowed in one another’s cabins.

16
• Boys are outlawed from High School Hill.
• Girls can “hang out” around Boys’ Circle but are not allowed inside of cabins.
• Older campers should not be in younger campers cabins, and vice versa.
• Campers are forbidden from entering staff members’ living spaces, including their counselors’.
• With the exception of counselors and senior management - and of course during maintenance calls and cabin
inspections - staff and faculty are strictly forbidden in your cabins.
• Students who are found in areas considered “off-limits” (anything listed above or not shown to them on their
camp tour) will loose privileges or may be expelled without refund.
• Students are forbidden from leaving campus at any time without a staff member, or without being signed out
by the Head Counselor to the safety of a parent or guardian.
