2022 Annual Oakville Film Festival - FESTIVAL GUIDE JUNE 22 ND TO 28 TH
A Welcome Message from
The Board of Directors

Welcome to the 9th annual Oakville Film Festival! We are thrilled to be returning to live
screenings, after two years of pivoting to virtual during a pandemic which has had such
an effect on people’s lives. We are pleased to offer a hybrid festival for 2022, which fea-
tures both live and virtual screenings, which helps to accommodate everyone’s viewing
preferences.

2022 is our biggest festival ever: with 113 films, 3 incredible GALA presentations at the
Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, two days of memorable screening experiences
at film.ca cinemas in Oakville, and many films also available virtually until the end of the
festival. So if you are not comfortable going out to the theatre just yet, you can watch
many of our films online, from the comfort of your own couch.

The Oakville Film Festival is an important cultural institution in Oakville, and OFFA is
thrilled to be back in the theatre, bringing you exciting and enlightening live screen-
ings, absorbing and engaging Q&As with directors, producers, cast and crew, as well
as a specially curated collection of music, dance, performance, and art, to elevate your
screening experience to a level not seen in most film festivals. There is something for
everyone: comedy, romance, thrillers, suspense, Sci-Fi, along with world class docu-
mentaries. And for 2022, OFFA is standing with our friends in Ukraine, doing a special
fundraiser for Unite with Ukraine, An Evening of Ukrainian film, song, and dance, in
partnership with Zirkova Vodka, The Ukrainian World Congress, as well as Grammy and
three-time Juno Award-winning Ukrainian Canadian singer and songwriter, Chantal
Kreviazuk.

A huge thank you to our grant partners for 2022, including the Trillium Community Re-
siliency Grant, Telefilm, Ontario Creates, and the Oakville Cultural Grant. We could not
have done this without you! And immense gratitude goes out as well to our sponsors,
many new, and many returning sponsors, for 2022. It is your generosity and support
that have helped us to build such an incredible film festival and arts organization: truly
a festival with a big heart.

Message from the Executive
Director & CEO, Telefilm Canada

Watching a film on a big screen, in a communal space is an irreplaceable experience.
That is why we are proud to support the Oakville Film Festival!

In a time of change, Canada has shown the many innovative and resourceful ways in
which we make our audiovisual sector thrive. We have given the world many reasons to
take notice of Canada and why we are a Partner of Choice.

Telefilm continues to put the needs of Canadian talent and their work at the centre of
its decisions. With our modernization efforts along with heightened priorities on equity,
diversity and inclusion, and now eco-responsibility, Telefilm has taken major steps to
ensure growth and success of the screen-based industry as we head back to cinemas to
enjoy the films.

Standing united, I want to thank and congratulate the Oakville Film Festival for con-
tinuing its work of uplifting a dynamic range of voices through films and celebrating the
brilliance of Canadian content at home and around the world.

As always, please continue to watch Canadian films wherever they are available and tell
others to do the same!

Director: Dina Amer
Starring: Lorenza Grimaudo, Ilona Grimaudo, Mouna Soualem
Synopsis: Cultural and intergenerational trauma erupt in this story about two
sisters on the outskirts of Paris. After the siblings are torn apart, the eldest, Hasna,

media misrepresented Hasna as the continent's first female suicide bomber. Footage of the
explosion surfaced later, and in it Hasna can be heard screaming, “Please help! Let me jump!

Director: Katharine Parsons
Starring: Philip Craig
Synopsis: In 2017 after a firestorm ripped through Santa Rosa, rescuers like Officer
Shannon Jay devoted themselves to rescuing the hundreds of cats who survived
a fire hot enough to melt glass and returning them to the families who had lost
everything. But a year later, when the monstrous Camp Fire wiped out Paradise, an
antagonist appeared in the aftermath and tried to stop them.

Film Fact: Cats can outrun a wildfire that spreads at 6 feet a second—faster than most dogs can
run. They can hear a normal human conversation from more than 500 meters away. When their
whiskers were burned off from the heat of the fire, it left them without an important defense
mechanism after the fire because they use whiskers to receive important information about their
surroundings. Cats escaped the fire by running into storm drains, up trees, into playhouses. Even
cats that were locked inside houses escaped because when the burning roofs collapsed, it blew
out the windows giving them an exit in a split second.
Q&A: Live Q&A with Dir. Katharine Parsons (The Fire Cats), Dir. Michael Mankowski and Exec-
