Scheduling for the events has been set and approved by the UIL State Office and the Region- al Executive Committee. Region 2 Angelo State University Conference 1A Introduction Angelo State University is pleased to serve as host for the University Interscholastic League Spring Meet for Region 2-1A. We want to do our part to assure that you have a successful meet and ask that you give close attention to the information contained in this handbook. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the Regional Director. LOCATION OF EVENTS One-Act Play Murphey Performance Hall Thursday and Friday, 72 West College Avenue April 15-16 Academic Events Angelo State University Campus Friday and Saturday, (Refer to Schedule of Events on page 13) April 16-17 Golf (boys) Quicksand Golf Course Monday and Tuesday, 2305 Pulliam Street April 19-20 Golf (girls) Bentwood Country Club Golf Course Monday and Tuesday, 2111 Club House Lane April 19-20 Track and Field LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field Friday and Saturday, Angelo State University Campus April 23-24 Tennis Bentwood Country Club Monday and Tuesday, 2111 Club House Lane April 26-27 ENTRIES AND CERTIFICATION/ELIGIBILITY All Academic entries, including One-Act Play, are certified and entered into the Regional Meet through the UIL Spring Meet Online System. Please refer to the sections of this handbook on golf (page 24), tennis (page 26), and track and field (page 27) for submitting district results. The eligibility of a student competing at the regional meet is the responsibility of the individual school. FEES In order to expedite the payment process for the 2021 Region 2-1A Spring Meet, the Regional Director has authorized the following flat rate fee schedule: Academic entry fee per district $2970 Athletic entry fee per district $5488 One-Act Play entry fee $750 for each company How the member schools constituting the district divide the full slate fees for Academics and Athletics among themselves is the business of the member schools within the district and the district’s Spring Meet Chairperson. All fees are non-refundable. Please refer to Schedule of Fees on page 12. The District Spring Meet Chair for each district represented in Region 2-1A will collect the academic and athletic fees for that district and submit one check by March 29. Each school with a One-Act Play will sub- mit a check for the entry fee at rehearsal time Thursday, April 15. Page 9
Region 2 Angelo State University Conference 1A ADMISSION FEES Admission fees for the Regional Spring Meet activities are as follows: One-Act Play $10 for adults; $5 for students Track and Field $8 for adults; $5 per day for students $12 two-day pass for adults Contest coaches and participating students will not be charged an admission fee. ACADEMIC CONFLICTS If a student who has followed the State Conflict Pattern earns eligibility to compete at the regional level in more than one event and finds that he/she has a full or partial conflict in the two events, he/she must make a choice of which contest will be participated in. No adjustments will be considered to accommodate the con- flict. VERIFICATION, AWARDS, STATE MEET INFORMATION Students, their coaches, and/or other school officials are urged to attend all verification periods and awards meetings. Regional meet directors are under no obligation to contact winners who fail to attend awards meetings with results. Information regarding the UIL Academic State Meet is posted on the UIL Texas web site. Information packets will not be mailed to schools or handed out during the regional meet verification meetings or awards ceremonies except for One-Act Play and L-D debate. Coaches and contestants must go to the UIL web site for the State Meet tentative schedule, UT campus map, UT parking, and other vital State Meet information. Responsibility for knowing times, dates, and sites of State Meet events rests solely with coaches and contestants. Second place regional teams should also look for the list of wild card qualifiers. MEDALS, PLAQUES, TROPHIES Individual and team awards will be given in compliance with UIL specifications and guidelines. All tro- phies and medals are awarded according to the uniform state plan and are uniform in all regions. Academic awards will be presented at the verification/contest site after official results. Athletic awards will be present- ed at the site of the competition. Please plan to be present for awards for your event or have someone from your school present. Unclaimed awards will NOT be mailed. WITHDRAWALS AND TARDINESS A school that withdraws a student from a Regional Meet is responsible for notifying the appropriate alter- nate and the Regional Director. Refunds of entry fees for withdrawals will not be made. A list of absent contestants will be reported to the State UIL office from each academic event. It is vitally important that you notify the Regional Director in advance if a contestant will be unable to attend the regional competition. Page 10
Region 2 Angelo State University Conference 1A HEADQUARTERS On Saturday, April 17, Headquarters for UIL activities will be located in room 112 of the Houston Harte University Center from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Campus maps, schedules, and other information will be available. Results of each academic contest will be posted as the reports are made available on the windows of the Credit Union office near the Crossroads Cafe area. FOOD SERVICES Food services are available on the ASU campus for your convenience. See the website Dine On Campus for more detailed information. Our food service company has agreed to an “open tab” system for schools attending the academic meet April 16-17. Any schools wishing to avail themselves of this service should contact the following person. SUPPLIES AND SOUVENIRS The ASU Bookstore, located in the Houston Harte University Center, will be open Friday from 7:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. School supplies, books, T-shirts, souvenirs, and gifts are among the items available for sale. The Bookstore will be open Saturday from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. REGIONAL MEET T-SHIRTS Regional UIL T-shirts will be on sale ($20 each) at the One-Act Play Contest on Friday, April 16, in the foyer of the Houston Harte University Center Saturday, April 17, and at the sites of the athletic events. SMOKING, OPEN CARRY , AND CAMPUS CARRY POLICIES Smoking and the use of all tobacco products is only allowed in designated smoking-permitted areas. Pursuant to the law, open carry is not permitted by a license holder on the premises of an institution of high- er education. A law passed by the 84th Texas Legislature and effective August 1, 2016, changes the approach to carrying a concealed handgun on higher education campuses in Texas. The law is often referred to as “campus carry,” but it is officially Texas Senate Bill 11: Carrying of Handguns by License Holders on Certain Campuses. Texas statutes prohibits concealed carry on the premises where any UIL sanctioned competition is being held. Buildings where concealed carry is normally permitted but will be used for UIL competitions will have portable 30.06 signs placed at the entrances. Individual schools should mail their entry fees to their district directors as listed on page 6 of this handbook. Fees are due by March 26 and will not be accepted from individuals or schools. The ap- propriate amount for each district is reflected in the following schedule of fees. Region 2 Angelo State University Conference 1A University Hosts: tudents from the ASU Visual and Performing Arts Department S will act as hosts for the One-Act Play casts. A University Host will be waiting at the loading door when you arrive to unload and will be able to answer questions, direct unloading of scenery and props, and assist in any other way desired. Dressing Rooms: ressing rooms will be provided for each school. You may plan to D leave personal belongings there during performances and should remove them immediately after the performance is concluded. Please leave valuables with a sponsor. Unit Set: ASU provides the basic unit set. Murphey Performance Hall: ince it’s birth in 1929 the Murphey Performance Hall (simply San S Angelo City Auditorium at that time), has hosted hundreds of per- formers, from Will Rogers to Elvis to Hal Holbrook to “The Sound of Music.” The Performance Hall will continue to be the primary home of the San Angelo Symphony as well as Ballet San Angelo’s Nutcracker and will provide a space for a Broadway series with the Best of touring Musicals and plays. he Murphey Performance Hall has a fully programmable light T board. The light board will be programmed by the host school prior to rehearsals at the participants request. A lighting cue sheet will be due at least one week prior to rehearsals to ensure the cues are programmed prior to the start of rehearsal. Each school will also be responsible for bringing one flash drive/jump drive for a backup save of their show. Authorized Personnel: I n accordance with UIL regulations, only students listed in the Official Eligibility Notice may be in the stage and dressing areas. Only eligible students may participate in the capacity as members of the contest company. Contest Manager Allen Otto Allen Otto has been involved with UIL One-Act Play since 2001, working in competitions from Zone to State. Allen holds a BA from Trinity University and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Houston School of Law and is currently the chief trial attorney in the Crimes Against Children Division for the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. During his time at Trinity University, Allen directed and performed and continues to be actively in- volved in theatre in the Houston area, including directing shows and coaching summer theatre camps for High School and Middle School students. Allen has also worked with Houston ISD to help build and grow participation in UIL Elementary, Middle, and High School tournaments and coached High School students in acting, performance skills, and public speaking. In addition to OAP adjudication, Allen is a UIL certified contest manager helping organize contests since 2009. Allen has served as a judge for various UIL events at the District, Region, and State levels. Page 22
Region 2 Angelo State University Conference 1A Critic Judges Terry Lewis Dr. Lewis is a retired professor of Theatre at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, now living in Amarillo. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of Theatre at West Texas A&M University. Selected as an American College Theatre Festival Faculty Fellow, Dr. Lewis has also directed at the Utah Shake- speare Festival, served as the Director of the Cornell Interactive Theatre Ensemble at Cornell University, Depart- ment Chair of Theatre and Dance at Southern Utah University, Head of Acting at Texas Tech University, and Department Chair of Theatre at Amarillo College. In 1994, Terry was awarded the Community College Theatre Educator of the year by TETA. His production of Breaking the Code was selected as the national winner of the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival. He has judged 5A, 3A, and 1A State UIL. Degrees earned: Ph.D., Texas Tech University; M.A., Brigham Young University; B.A., Southern Utah University Suzanne Martin Suzanne Martin has been involved in educational theatre on the high school and middle school levels for 28 years. She retired in 2014 from Claudia Taylor Johnson H.S. where she served as Fine Arts Depart- ment Head. During her career, she taught in San Antonio, Plano, Waco-Midway, Duncanville and Ennis. Suzanne’s productions qualified for Region multiple times, and her students performed at the State meet in 2013. She participated in the OAP process as a director, actor, contest manager and host. As an adjudicator, she is committed to responding honestly and providing helpful and uplifting feed- back. Suzanne strongly believes in the power of theatre to inspire students. Degrees earned: M.A. in Directing, B.S.E. in Theatre and Speech - Baylor University Emily McLemore Emily McLemore is a passionate arts advocate, teacher and mentor. From her first experience with UIL OAP as a freshman in high school, Mrs. McLemore fell in love with the one act play process and philos- ophy. This passion for theatre led her to earn both her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Hardin-Simmons University and her Master of Fine Arts in Theatre from Florida Atlantic University. Mrs. McLemore taught theatre and directed UIL OAP in both rural and suburban schools spending time at both the junior high and high school levels for close to ten years and then spent a dozen years teaching art at the high school level. Mrs. McLemore is an Instructional Designer and Adjunct Theatre Instructor for Tarleton State University. Mrs. McLemore is also a published writer/playwright and researches fine arts educational practices. Mrs. McLemore enjoys using her passion for the stage and her gifts in design and directing as a critic judge. At the end of the day, her goal is to be a strong and positive voice for di- rectors and students.
