KOAA Honors Excellence 2021 Alumnus/Alumna of the Year Distinguished Service Awards Living Tribute Award Honorary Memberships KOAA is proud of all the recipients of its legendary annual awards. Alumni and friends are welcome to honor these individuals by making contributions in their name(s). Contributions are directed to the KOAA Education Program Fund or KOAA Student Request Fund. Education Program Fund This fund is for the improvement of osteopathic medical education in all ATSU- KCOM departments. ATSU-KCOM’s mission is to prepare osteopathic physicians eminently qualified for the challenges of the 21st century. The goal for this fund is to assist in accomplishing this vital mission. Investment income from donations made in honor of the Living Tribute Award and the Alumnus/Alumna of the Year recipients is used to fund innovative educational programs and acquire needed educational resources, such as equipment, textbooks, resource books, and professional periodicals. The number of programs funded each year is determined by College needs. Annually, the KOAA board receives project nominations of highest priority from ATSU-KCOM’s dean. The board reviews nominated proposals and recommends projects for funding to the board president. In 2020-21, this fund awarded $13,964.04 to Tatyana Kondrashova, MD, associate professor, for equipment to support development of hands-on ultrasonography skills in diagnostics of lung diseases while reducing student contact with each other. Student Request Fund This fund provides support for ATSU-KCOM student organizations requesting financial support for their organization’s activities. KOAA funds this program through contributions received in honor of Honorary KOAA Membership and Distinguished Service Award recipients. The KOAA board annually receives student organization requests from the Student Government Association Executive Committee. The fund’s balance determines the number of requests supported each year. The board reviews all nominated proposals and recommends those to be funded. In 2020-21, $7,150 in awards from this fund were distributed to ATSU’s Dermatology Club, Garden Club, OB/GYN Club, Sexuality in Medicine Club, American College of Osteopathic Surgeons – Medical Student Section, and Still Caring Health Connection.

David Kelley, DO, ’03 David Kelley, DO, ’03, has more than 27 years in healthcare operational and leadership roles. Committed to healthcare at an early age, he has worked in a multitude of supporting departments in various hospitals and medical centers, academic and private practice. Dr. Kelley had 16 years of experience in healthcare prior to undertaking and completing his medical education and training. He is currently a double-specialist in anesthesia and critical care, board certified in anesthesiology, and board eligible in critical care. Dr. Kelley earned his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from ATSU- KCOM in June 2003. He completed an internship in general surgery, residency in anesthesiology, and fellowship in critical care medicine all at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. He completed an additional year of training in leadership and preventive medicine at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice at Dartmouth College. While his perspectives and strategies on intensive care unit (ICU) operations and management are grounded in 15-plus years of hands-on, clinical and leadership experience in various ICUs, his year at the Dartmouth Institute enabled him to hone those skills to a razor’s edge. Dr. Kelley was honored to be selected as the founding medical director for the departments of Critical Care and Respiratory Care at Clarian Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana. This facility was a brand-new launch and required intense focus and attention to detail to design solid performing departments from a blank slate. Dr. Kelley is currently transitioning back to the world of academia and has recently accepted a position as assistant professor of anesthesiology at the State University of New York Medical Center in Syracuse, New York. He is also a consulting physician executive in clinical applications development, product research, and on-site support for Cerner Corporation, one of the leading healthcare information technology firms in the world. Dr. Kelley is a past member of the KOAA Board of Directors, including a term as KOAA president. He is active as an ATSU-KCOM alumni ambassador, enthusiastically representing the osteopathic profession and demonstrating his commitment to advancing the mission of ATSU with energetic volunteerism and through his generous financial support.

Carla True She didn’t know it at the time, but when Carla True walked through the doors of ATSU-KCOM on July 21, 1969, she had begun the first day of her more than five-decade career with the University. For eight years, True remained in her initial position, working as a transcriptionist at ATSU-KCOM and briefly working for a hematologist. When a friend informed her about an available patient care coordinator position in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, she transferred, excited but nervous about her career change. True became a staple of the department, as well as, one of ATSU’s longest-serving employees. In her role, True ensured patients were taken care of, from their initial phone call to compiling medical histories before their doctor arrived. While she enjoyed the office work, True said her patients and co-workers were the best part of the job. “They know what I like to eat, what I like to do for fun, what I do on the weekends,” True said of her co-workers. “They just get into your life, and you get into theirs.” One employee in particular made his way into True’s life, her husband of 49 years and the Kirksville, Missouri, campus’ former lead electrician, Allen True. For more than 23 years, the pair enjoyed being both coworkers and life partners. Over the course of True’s career, the University and osteopathic medicine underwent significant changes. ATSU’s size, scope, and available technology increased dramatically. She even worked under eight of the University’s 12 presidents. The strong bonds she formed with those around her, however, remained constant. “They’re good to you, you’re good to them,” True said. “Most of them have been just like family.” KOAA Honors Excellence 2021
