Resident Efforts to Reduce Contamination in Curbside Recycling Shows Progress Beginning in 2018, the City of Manchester undertook a concerted effort to enlist resident help in reducing contamination in curbside recycling. Our combined efforts have paid off! A recent review of audit results from the MRF (Manufacturing Recycling Facility) operated by Republic Services showed no instances of “non-compliant” recycling trucks arriving from Manchester routes. In order for trucks to achieve a “non-compliant” rating, recycling must contain less than 15% contamination. That means recyclable materials are clean, dry, and loose (not in bags), and loads do not include non-recyclable materials such as plastic grocery bags, garden hoses, or greasy takeout containers. While 15% contamination is the threshold, we know Manchester can do even better! We ask your help in reducing contamination at the curb. Lower contamination helps ensure materials are actually recycled, not sent to the landfill, and that our collective effort doesn’t go to waste. Keep up the good work, Manchester!
