Welcome to ESS 2021 As President of the Equine Science Society, I am thrilled to see that our members have continued to be pro- ductive over the past two years! We will all have the opportunity to share and engage in dialogue over the next four days, regarding our new ideas, successes, and challenges. I encourage all participants to use all the online/virtual skills that you have learned over the past year and a half to help make our 1st virtual symposium a complete success. Most of the presentations have been prerecorded to ensure the highest quality and reli- ability, but the Q & A following will be LIVE and a great opportunity to engage in debate. There are a plethora of other LIVE interaction opportunities, including our workshop, chat sessions, social events, the general busi- ness meeting, and awards ceremony. The community and sharing of ideas that are some of the greatest bene- fits of membership in the Equine Science Society are only fully realized by those that personally engage in ESS. Ask questions, share ideas, offer constructive criticism, and have fun! If each of us tries to do these things, our symposia will remain an invaluable event, whether it is virtual in 2021, or in-person in Dallas, Texas in 2023! Burt Staniar While I regret that we are not meeting in person, I wholeheartedly welcome you all to this virtual meet- ing. I would not have anticipated, when I first joined the WALTHAM Petcare Science Institute (formerly the WALTHAM Centre of Pet Nutrition) many years ago, that it would be the start of a long-term friendship with colleagues in the United States, several of whom have been essential to making this meeting a reality, in- cluding the ESS president, Burt Staniar, the vice-chair of the organizing committee, Amy Burk, and the many members of the standing committees. I thank them and all those involved in this meeting for their help and support, especially my colleagues on the virtual meeting organizing committee. I would also like to thank the reviewers, sponsors, the team at FASS (especially Cara Tharp, Mark Budden, and Kevin Wolter), the present- ers, and of course, the delegates — without all of you, we could not hold such a symposium. I am thrilled that so many ESS members have supported this virtual meeting and I hope that we can recreate, as far as possible, the positive interactive nature of our in-person meetings. With this in mind, Kari Turner has worked very hard to facilitate discussions of topics between interested parties with the introduction of the specific "topic chat rooms," and Amy Burk has coordinated the alumni breakfast meeting rooms. Ellen Rankins and others have even set up a virtual escape room social event for us to enjoy. As is traditional, we have a couple of eminent invited speakers, with presentations ably organized by Carey Williams. Finally, as much as we might want to forget COVID-19, we acknowledge the important disruptive role it has played through a virtual workshop chaired by Craig Wood. Welcome to ESS 2021! Pat Harris Program Chair 2

Symposium Overview Oral Presentations The scheduled length for oral presentation of each abstract is 12 minutes. These recorded presentations have been preloaded and will start automatically at the designated time. At the end of the video, a clock will count down the time until the Q&A session. Please click on the link to the live Q&A session at the appropriate time. During the Q&A session, the speaker and moderator will be live and the moderator will read questions posed by attendees to the speaker. For those competing in the graduate or undergraduate competitions, only the first 3 minutes of questions will be judged by the competition judges. Each presentation has been allocated 20 minutes; at the end of this time period, the presentation session will close. Questions will be stopped before the end of the 20-minute session time to facilitate moving between presentations. Poster Presentations The scheduled length for presentation of each poster is 3 minutes. These recorded presentations have been preloaded and will start automatically at the designated time. Between 2 and 4 posters will be shown sequentially; then, at the end of the combined presentation time, a clock will count down until the Q&A session. Please click on the link to the live Q&A session at the appropriate time. During the Q&A session, the poster presenters and the moderator will be live, and the moderator will read questions posed by attendees to the presenters. At the end of the allocated time for the combined poster session (typically 20 minutes), the session will close. Questions will be stopped before the end of the combined poster session to facilitate moving between presentations. Posters (PDFs) will be available to view on the Symposium website beginning on May 25. Please look at these and leave questions on the site. The moderators will use these as the basis for their questions during the live poster Q&A sessions. Society Business and Social Events General Business Meeting The Equine Science Society is a society that represents its members — so we invite all of our members to the General Business Meeting to hear what the society has been doing on your behalf, how it is using your money, and what plans we have for the future. If you are not yet a member, then please join ESS, attend the business meeting on Friday, June 4, from 11:00 am to 12:20 pm, and add your views on how we can take this society forward. Documents pertaining to the agenda and agenda items, including the 2019 Minutes and Board of Directors nominations, will be made available on the ESS website. Voting members should review these documents in preparation for a call to vote at the 2021 General Business Meeting. Opportunities for Social Interaction Alumni Breakfasts: Meet up with old friends and make new ones On Thursday, June 3, from 9:00 to 9:55 am, we invite you to bring your own breakfast to one of our alumni breakfasts — pick up a coffee and meet up with old friends and colleagues. This is a great opportunity to reminisce over the good times (and perhaps not so good), the funny times, and the challenging times while remembering those mentors who are no longer with us. Each alumni breakfast will represent one college or university, but as you may have been associated with more than one university during your career, feel free to move between rooms if you wish. Chat Rooms Join us in one of the chat rooms for an informal discussion with others on a topic you are interested in or wish to know more about. Each chat room will cover a different topic and will include several people who will lead the topic and ensure a lively, informative discussion. This is a chance to meet people whose papers you may have read in an casual setting and ask the questions you have always wanted to ask. This informal approach should bring about new ideas for our equine research, teaching, and extension programs, as well as potential new collaborations. Chat rooms are available for 1-hour durations during the afternoons (EDT) of June 1 and 2. You are welcome to listen in on any of these focused discussions and to become engaged and involved. Evening Social Events Wednesday, June 2, 6:00 – 7:30 pm EDT Graduate Student Social: Trivia Night Please join fellow graduate students for a fun evening of trivia! Team up and engage in a little friendly competition! Thursday, June 3, 6:00 – 7:30 pm EDT The ESS Society Virtual Escape Room Social This event is open to all conference attendees. Feel free to grab a snack and beverage before joining us for an evening of putting your wits to the test. Do you have what it takes to beat the clock and break your team out? Join us and find out! 8
Symposium and Society Awards Awards will be announced during the Awards Ceremony on Friday, June 4, at 1:00 pm EDT. Although we will miss being together at our traditional Awards Banquet, it is still important to remember, as a group, those who we have lost since we were last together in 2019 and to celebrate the contributions they made to our society as well as to their families and friends. Remembering and celebrating has become even more important over the past year. The Awards Ceremony is also an opportunity to congratulate members who have made a difference during the last two years through our society-associated awards. It is a chance to recognize the future of the society and to acknowledge the skill, passion, dedication, and enthusiasm of our student presenters, particularly the competition winners. ESS would like to thank the Student Competition Committee and Society Awards Committee and all the judges for their hard work in organizing and managing these awards. Following the Awards Ceremony, Zoom rooms will be available for each student section, where students can meet with judges and chairs and receive personal congratulations. The ceremony, which will be led by the ESS President, Dr Burt Staniar, and the Chairman of the Student Competition Committee, Dr Janice Holland, will proceed as follows: Welcome Memorials Awards Undergraduate Student Competition Equine Biosciences and Reproductive Physiology Graduate Student Competition Exercise Science Graduate Student Competition Genetics Graduate Student Competition Nutrition Graduate Student Competition Production and Management Graduate Student Competition Teaching and Extension Graduate Student Competition Journal of Equine Veterinary Sciences (JEVS) Graduate Student Publication Award The undergraduate and graduate competition are designed to promote scholarly organization and presentation at the national and international level by students.
