2020 OARSI World Congress on Osteoarthritis | April 30–May 3, 2020 Vienna, Austria MESSE WIEN EXHIBITION & CO N G R E S S C E N T E R WELCOME Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to invite you to register for the 2020 Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) World Congress in Vienna, Austria. The annual OARSI Congress is a multidisciplinary global forum for all those interested in OA research and treatment from academia and industry, including basic and clinical research scientists, rheumatologists, orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, physiatrists, physical therapists and other allied health professionals, methodologists, and policy makers. Highlights of the 2020 program include a plenary session on the Gut microbiome and OA and What rare diseases can tell us about OA. The opening night keynote lecture will be delivered by Dr. James Gallagher. Interact with experts in specific areas of basic and clinical science through ticketed breakfast workshops. Topics include, among others, “Rapid MRI”, “Functional Genomics”, “Clinical methodology” and “Guidelines and recommendation in treating hand OA”. The great debate will be on whether “Joint tissues impact on nerves or Nerves impact on joint tissues”. As in previous years, there will be pre-congress workshops and sessions featuring the highest rated young investigator abstracts, the year-in-review, as well as poster tours led by experts in the field. The Young Investigator Committee will again host the popular Mentorship Session. Due to its great success of last year we again will recognize the highest rated abstracts in 12 broad categories, regardless of stage of career. Details are provided in the abstract submission instructions. Additional congress awards programs include Travel scholarships, Young Investigator highest rated abstracts, Clinical Science Award, Basic Science Award, and Lifetime Achievement Award. Attend this meeting to join a global network of individuals from a broad range of disciplines, all working toward a better understanding of OA with the goals of preventing, managing and curing the disease through state-of-the-art research to improve the lives of the 300 million worldwide with OA! We look forward to seeing you and learning from each other during OARSI 2020 in Vienna! Ticketed Registration Options (Continued) Pain in Osteoarthritis Discussion Group Objectives: There is still a great disconnect between preclinical research into the neurobiological mechanisms of pain and effective new therapeutics in the clinic. This discussion group will aim to identify some of the deficiencies in animal models of OA and try to understand the limitations in assessing pain in animal models. The workshop will also discuss the difficulties in running and interpreting OA clinical trials in heterogenous OA populations. We hope to bring fundamental and clinician scientists together to find common ground where fundamental research findings translate better into providing more effective OA pain relief for patients. The goal of this program is to leverage the interdisciplinary strengths of the ORS and OARSI to stimulate and propose new strategic scientific approaches and patient-centric recommendations that exist at the interface between disciplines to address OA. It will target all investigators and trainees interested in OA research and treatments (e.g., biologists, engineers, imaging experts and clinicians). Discussion topics and presentations include basic mechanisms of symptomatic disease, pre-clinical animal models, and clinical OA pain phenotyping. 1. This Program will explore new approaches to address the complex peripheral and central mechanisms of OA pain involving interactions between mechanical, biological and structural elements of the whole joint that converge at the systems level (i.e., the patient). 2. The presentations and discussion will focus on translation of research to clinical applications, including OA pain etiology, patient phenotypes and treatment strategies. 3. Speakers will be asked to review how current evidence from pre-clinical or clinical studies could be leveraged to design future studies and clinical trials to address knowledge gaps that currently Spinal Osteoarthritis Discussion Group prevent new solutions to treat and prevent OA pain.
