Nimble Noggins encourages families to enroll students on site so family members can meet our teachers
and view the classrooms. Family members should bring their child and prepare to stay for a little while
until teachers can answer questions and give enrollment forms to each family. This allows our families a
few moments in our environment to get a feel for our program.

understood that a child who has been admitted to Nimble Noggins is enrolled for the entire
school year. As a convenience, we break your yearly tuition fee into monthly payments.

withdrawal. Tuition costs remain the same regardless of holidays, observances, absences,
family vacations, illness, snow closures or school break vacations. Fees are based on the space

Family Arrangements

Nimble Noggins recognizes that all families are not structured similarly and that some families may live
apart due to a variety of circumstances. Nimble Noggins teachers and staff are sensitive to the needs of
children in these situations and will work to support the entire family. We are happy to provide
duplicate information in the child’s mailbox to accommodate both parents’ need for information.

If information is needed by the Nimble Noggins staff regarding custody, child pick-ups, etc., please
provide us with the formal paperwork. Unless we have the appropriate paperwork, we cannot keep a
child’s biological mother and/or father from picking up his or her child.

                            Immunizations/Emergency Forms
Immunizations

Immunizations are an important public health policy effecting children. As a matter of state law, children
in the program must:
    ▪
        Be fully immunized, or
    ▪ Be in the process of becoming fully immunized according to the approved schedule, or
    ▪ Have a physician’s statement that immunizations are not needed for medical reasons
or a note from the parent stating that the child is not immunized due to religious
        beliefs.

The immunization form must be completed and turned in with the registration packet before the start
of school.

Have your doctor fax immunization records to us at:

                                            Our Mission:

At Nimble Noggins Educational Preschool, we believe that movement is instrumental to a child's
education and development. Active Minds, Healthy Bodies, and Happy Hearts allow children to
flourish physically, academically, and socially.

Philosophy Statement
Nimble Noggins provides an exceptionally rich environment designed to promote ease of
learning. In addition to our curriculum, which includes exploring literacy, numeracy, science,
music and art, students in Nimble Noggins receive daily instruction in gymnastics,
dance/creative movement, and/or children’s yoga, all under one roof! At Nimble Noggins
Educational Preschool, we believe that movement is instrumental in a child's education and
development. We all know that preschoolers love to move. Research shows us that early
childhood is a critical time for brain development and self- image. Nimble Noggins Preschool is
dedicated to enhancing this crucial period in child development by providing an environment
which allows children to flourish physically, academically, and socially, using movement as a
medium.

Thank you for taking the time to consider Nimble Noggins as your premier choice for your
child’s foundation and development into a successful, life-long learner.

The Mind/Body Connection (Movement and Learning) is integral to our educational
philosophy. Movement and learning are demonstrated in Nimble Noggins in many
ways.

Language Arts
The possibilities for exploring language arts through movement are inexhaustible.
    • Children act out the meaning of individual words from stories, poems, or even spelling lists.
    • Through movement, children can begin to comprehend the meaning of action words like
slither, stalk, pounce, or stomp – or descriptive words like graceful, smooth, or forceful.
    • Preschool children can work in pairs to demonstrate the meanings of simple opposites like
sad and happy, or up and down.
    • The rhythmic nature of movement mimics the rhythm of language.
    • Movement and language are both forms of self-expression.
    • Parts of speech such as verbs, adverbs, and prepositions are reinforced by movement, “Skip
        quickly around the cones.”
    • Spatial orientation, necessary for letter recognition and writing, is developed
        through movement.

      • Stringing actions together to form sequences of movement is very similar to linking
words together to form sentences, and linking sentences to paragraphs.
      • When children are able to move and act out language there is better understanding and
comprehension. Things like suffixes become more relevant; try acting scared versus
          scary.

Mathematics
Quantitative ideas are part of the language of mathematics, and movement is an ideal, tangible
means of conveying many of these ideas to children.
      • Activities involving levels and body shapes can demonstrate the concepts of big and little,
long and short, high and low, wide and narrow.
      • The movement element of force is all about light and heavy.
      • Counting, skip counting, and other math skills can easily be practiced in a fun way; often
without children even realizing they are doing math!
      • Math can seem very abstract to many children. When paired with something concrete, that they
are very familiar with – physical movement, concepts are more easily understood.
      • Patterns are prevalent in both math and movement.
Art
      • Creativity in movement is encouraged
      • Shapes and colors can be explored with movement by providing pictures or examples of
objects in various colors (e.g., a yellow banana, a red apple, or a green plant) and asking the
children to demonstrate the shape of each object. Students can then either take on the shape
of the objects mentioned or become them (e.g., if the color green reminded some children of
frogs, they could depict the movement of frogs).
      • The process of creating art involves full body motion. Painting, sculpture, gluing, and cutting all
require fine motor skills and often gross motor skills.
Science

      • Many themes typically explored in classrooms fall under the science category, including the
human body – body parts and their functions, the senses, hygiene, and nutrition, seasons; and
other topics related to nature – weather, animals, plants, and the ocean. All of these naturally
          lend themselves to movement experiences.
      • Furthermore, students learn from experience about how their bodies move, how their lungs
and heart work, and how their muscles get stronger
      • Health is a very relevant area of science for young children. Creating a daily habit
of exercise is important for a healthy lifestyle

Social Studies
    • Lessons in social studies for young children begin with the children themselves because that is
where their world begins. Self-concept, therefore, is a logical starting point. Students pretend to

walk as though sad, mad, proud, scared, tired, or happy. They learn to display these emotions
        with hands or faces alone.
   • Possibilities abound for exploring such social studies themes as holidays and
celebrations, occupations, and transportation. Creative and dramatic play focus on
members of our community (doctors, firefighters, nurses etc) and the jobs that they do.
   • Many movement activities require participation as a group. Children learn how work with
each other to take turns, follow rules, and resolve conflict in these situations.

Active Minds:

Nimble Noggins believes learning should be natural, participatory, and most importantly, a FUN
process for preschoolers. In fact, the love of learning developed at this age is one of the most
important factors for later academic success. Nimble Noggins uses a team created curriculum
designed to fulfill Arizona Early Learning Standards, and to give our preschoolers the learning
strategies they need to become lifelong learners. Our teachers engage children through active
learning by providing an academic setting that is filled with exploration, challenges, and new
ideas. Individual student interests are incorporated into our curriculum to engage students and
promote curiosity. Lessons and centers develop language, numeracy, reading, writing, and
problem solving skills that are integral to the growth of the whole child. Dramatic play, fun, and
movement are important elements of our program as they also support and augment learning.
In addition, we focus on

    • Reading readiness themes to help children prepare for kindergarten, including
letter recognition, letter sounds, sight words, and a word rich environment.
    • The world of science is explored through discovery lessons and hands on experiments.
    • Math concepts are taught using a variety of manipulatives to allow children to learn in
a concrete manner and to help develop an internal understanding of numeracy.
    • Social Studies are explored as we learn about our classroom community, the
community in which we live, and our world community

Healthy Bodies:

Academics are only part of the story at Nimble Noggins, however, as students also learn from a
broad slate of movement activities, such as gymnastics, yoga, and dance. Research has
demonstrated that preschool gymnastics enhances brain development through new neural
networks in the brain. Imagine, creating NEW neural networks while having fun in gymnastics,
dance, and yoga! In addition to brain development, these kinds of movement activities
promote a healthy body by:

Happy Hearts:
Social Development Basic Knowledge & Skills

At Nimble Noggins we believe in the development of the whole child. In addition to giving
our students the academic skills they need to succeed and the physical activities they need to
be healthy, we strive to instill confidence, happiness, understanding of emotions, and the
development of healthy relationships with others, in our students. Students grow socially by
becoming part of our community at Nimble Noggins. They take an active role in creating and
maintaining this community.
Role play, free play, and other activities give us the opportunity to help our students develop
the language and skills to express their emotions and desires. As part of our daily curriculum,
Nimble Noggins combines rhythmic movement with speech and song which affects the areas of
the brain having to do with inner speech and impulse control. These areas of the brain also
contribute to language development, self-management, and social skills. Nimble Noggins
preschoolers will:

   ▪ Expand their circle of trusted adults while maintaining a closeness with a few
       special people.
   ▪ Gain self-esteem from feeling capable and demonstrating new skills. Use more complex
language to express understanding of feelings and their causes
   ▪ Use physical, imaginative, and cognitive resources to comfort themselves and
control the expression of emotion with guidance from our teachers.
   ▪ Develop an approach to social entry skills-e.g., having our students work in cooperative
groups, join existing activities, and share.
   ▪ Engage in pretend play and simple games with rules.
   ▪ Establish and maintain friendships with other children.
   ▪ Use words and actions to demonstrate awareness, understanding, and concern for
       what others are feeling.
   ▪ Learn to use negotiations and compromise to resolve conflicts.
   ▪ Become involved in our community by taking part in food drives and other altruistic
       endeavors.

When children feel loved and important they internalize these feelings. With each completed
challenge, whether it is physical, academic, or social, children gain self-confidence and are more
likely to take on new challenges. Teachers at Nimble Noggins will provide the support needed
to ensure that your child can enjoy these successes.

ASSESSMENTS

Child assessment is a vital and necessary component of all high-quality early childhood
programs. Assessment is important to understand and support young children’s
development. Nimble Noggins completes screenings and assessments that encompass all
areas of development; sensory, language, cognitive, gross-motor, fine-motor, and social-
emotional. Assessment is also essential to document and evaluate how effectively programs
are meeting young children’s educational needs, and to inform our program’s improvement.

Child Development – Children do not just grow in size. They develop, evolve, and mature,
mastering ever more complex understanding of the people, objects, and challenges in their
environment. There is a general pattern or sequence for development that is true of most
children. However, the rate, character, and quality of development vary from child to child.
1926 N. 4th Street, Suite 7, Flagstaff, AZ 86004
                                                                                             928-526-5934
                                                                                  www.nimblenoggins.com

Quality assessment looks not only at what is happening within the child, but also to the care
that the child requires in order to thrive. For a child to develop and learn in a healthy and
normal way, it is important not only to meet the basic needs for protection, food, and health
care, but also to meet the basic needs for interaction and stimulation, affection, security,
and learning through exploration and discovery.

All staff is trained in the use of assessment in an early childhood program which includes
the purpose and value of assessment and appropriate assessment tools.

Assessment Procedures – All screenings, checklists, and assessments will be completed
by qualified personnel.

   ▪
Developmental assessments are done on an informal basis throughout the school year.
Various other methods of data are gathered to document the developmental growth
of children. These include observations, work sampling, and checklists.
   ▪
Assessments are discussed with parents as needed and at the two scheduled
parent/teacher conferences, one in the fall and one in the spring.

SCREENING AND REFERRAL

Throughout the assessment and screening process, any developmental concerns by either the
teacher or parent will be addressed immediately. Families are referred to necessary specialist,
which may include pediatrician, speech specialist, FUSD, and other community resources.

OBSERVATIONS AND PORTFOLIOS

During the preschool day teachers will utilize observations and interactions to gain
knowledge about each child and their learning. Each observer will use guidelines on how to
observe children and record their observations. Child Portfolios-tools may include checklists,
social inventory, anecdotal records, self-reflections, progress reports, samples of work,
drawings, paintings, writings, stories and photographs, etc.

DISCIPLINE POLICY

Our environment is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. Nimble Noggins helps
students develop a deep love and respect for themselves, others, and their environments.

                                                                                           928-526-5934
                                                                                www.nimblenoggins.com

Children have greater respect for their teachers, their peers, their environment and their
lessons when they feel safe and sure of what is expected of them. We believe in consistent
rules and a gentle reinforcement of those rules.

                         DISCIPLINE AND GUIDANCE PRECEDURES

We see discipline as the opportunity to teach or develop our students through instruction.
Positive discipline seeks to change or prevent negative behavior rather than punishment which
focuses on the negative behavior and typically has a negative outcome. At Nimble Noggins we
believe that positive discipline encourages the development of life skills so children can grow to
be socially and emotionally sound individuals, get along with others, and feel good about
themselves. Positive discipline strategies not only include interventions to be used with the
children when they misbehave, but also techniques to create a respectful, fair, consistent
program.

Our guiding principal will be to help children respect themselves, respect others, and respect
their surroundings. We will REDIRECT negative behavior, DEMONSTRATE appropriate behavior,
offer ALTERNATIVES to negative behavior, RECOGNIZE and REWARD with a kind word or a hug
positive behavior, and use LOGICAL CONSEQUENCES.

It is our belief that we can work with all children and guide them toward positive behaviors,
however, should a child continually disrupt the classroom or cause harm to others he or she
will be asked to leave the program. We reserve the right to terminate service at any time.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

Families are celebrated at Nimble Noggins. The role of parents is vital. Family involvement and
connectedness is an integral piece of what makes our program strong. Families are frequently
visible in and around the center, sharing life and what they love with the children. Their role in
informing and working together with their child’s teacher is the glue that keeps our center in
place. It is important to us that we develop skills and knowledge to work effectively with our
diverse families. Our staff will use a variety of formal and informal strategies (including
conversation) to become acquainted with and learn from families about their family structure,
their preferred child-rearing practices, and information families wish to share about their socio-
economic, linguistic, racial, religious and cultural backgrounds. Program staff will actively use
information about families to adapt the environment, curriculum, and teaching methods to the
families we serve.

PARENT COMMUNICATION and CURRICULUM ACCESSIBILITY

Communication between teachers and parents is an imperative part of student success. At
Nimble Noggins we strive to keep lines of communication open by providing daily reports which
showcase activities, behaviors, and accomplishments demonstrated by your student each day.
Monthly newsletters are also sent home and weekly copies of the classroom routine and lesson
plans are posted on the parent bulletin boards. It is helpful for you to review activities planned
for the day with your child. This is a great way to talk with your child about his/her day. You
may find if you ask your child, “What did you do today?” you might hear, “Nothing”. If you
know about specific activities that occurred, you can ask more direct questions: “Can you tell
me about the picture you painted today?” Since the curriculum is planned in advance, some
changes based on spontaneous learning opportunities, children’s interests and needs can be
expected.

PARENT and TEACHER CONFERENCES

Individual parent-teacher conferences will be offered at least twice during each school year.
During the conference, you will review and receive a copy of the Developmental Summary. We
also set goals for our students with the parent’s input. Ongoing, informal communication of
parent or teacher concerns and the sharing of special joys, sorrows, and accomplishments in
the child’s life are important. Please feel free to speak with your child’s teacher during
arrival/departure, or schedule a time to talk privately. For students entering Kindergarten, a
transition plan will be discussed at the Spring Conference.

TRANSITIONS

Transitioning into and out of preschool can sometimes be challenging for students and their
families. Nimble Noggins is there to support these transitions every step of the way. Helpful
tips for transitioning into preschool are provided at our “Meet the Teachers” night at the
beginning of each school year. For students preparing to enter Kindergarten, transition
strategies will be discussed with parents during Spring Conferences.

Snow Day Policy
Nimble Noggins follows Flagstaff Unified School District’s determinations when it comes to school
delays and closures due to inclement weather. On delayed start school days, Nimble Noggins will
begin at 10:00.

Lunch and Snack Policy

Good nutrition is an important component to the well-being and success of our students. Parents of
full-day students are required to pack a healthy lunch, 2 snacks, and a water bottle for each day your
child attends school. Half-day students need to bring one snack and a drink. Please limit the amount of
processed sugar in your child’s lunch and snacks (no soda or candy). Juice is also very high in sugar
content. Milk and water are the suggested drinks for very young children. Nimble Noggins will have
“back up snacks” available for those students who forget their snack or do not have a healthy option
available. Nimble Noggins may prohibit certain foods based on allergies of students in our classroom. A
notice will be sent home if these limitations should arise.

STUDENT PICK UP AND DROP OFF POLICY

Arrival and departure is a busy time at Nimble Noggins. Parents are asked to walk their child to
their classroom. Please sign your child in at arrival and out at departure at the classroom. For
billing and attendance purposes, parents must sign their child in and out of the program.

ARRIVAL

During arrival it is very important to set up a routine that your family can follow every day. This
provides your child with a sense of security. Please keep teachers informed about your child’s
health, mood, eating habits, family situation, or anything you think might affect your child’s
behavior at school. We recommend that you help put away items in their cubby, walk your child
into the room, greet the teachers and friends, help sanitize their hands and assist your child in
selecting a toy or joining an activity. When it is time for the person dropping the child off to go,
tell the child you are leaving, and say, “Good-bye”. If your child is having difficulty separating,
signal a teacher for assistance. Feel free to call us later if your child is upset when you leave,
and we will let you know how he or she is doing.

DEPARTURE

If someone we do not know is to pick up your child, please inform the teacher. This person
must be listed as authorized to pick-up your child on the enrollment paperwork. Remind the
authorized person that we may ask for picture identification to insure your child’s safety. We
are not allowed to release your child to an older sibling under the age of 18. You may have up
to three (3) different people who are authorized to pick up your child on the emergency
directory. We require families to have at least two (2) authorized people listed.

During departure, it is also important to follow a set routine. We recommend that when you
arrive, you greet your child and the teachers, and let your child know how much time he or she
has to wrap up the ongoing project or activity. While your child is finishing up is a good time to
talk with the teachers to discuss your child’s day, but this is not the time to have a full

CHILD ABUSE POLICIES
Mandated Reporting

As professionals in contact with young children and their families, we at Nimble Noggins are
required by law to help CPS become aware of children who may be abused or neglected.
According to the law, public or private school teachers, educational administrators, guidance or
family counselors; as well as day care/child care workers, are mandated reporters. Thus, it is
policy of Nimble Noggins Educational Preschool Program to report any and all suspected cases
of child abuse and/or neglect to CPS immediately by telephone and to follow up in writing
within 24 hours the same information as reported by telephone. Our school will offer full
cooperation of its staff during the investigation of the reported incident.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
• Emergency phone numbers are clearly posted by all phones.

• The parent/guardian provides, in writing, the names and phone numbers of persons
to contact if the parent/guardian cannot be reached.

• In case of an emergency, a faculty/staff member may go with the child to the emergency
room and remain until a parent/guardian arrives.

• Teachers report in writing any injuries that may occur while the child attends Nimble Noggins.

• Teachers notify the parent/guardian of any injury requiring first aid treatment.

• Teachers report serious injuries to the Director immediately.

• Fire drills are practiced once a month throughout the year
