OHS Spiritline Handbook 2019-2020

Objective: The objective of the OHS Spiritline is to promote and generate interest,
enthusiasm, and support within the school, its athletic teams, and traditions, as well as
participate in healthy training and competition as a cohesive, unified team.

Coaching Philosophy: Our coaching philosophy includes a plan to develop student
athletes into better athletes and quality citizens. We have high standards for our Spiritline, they
are representing us as coaches, their school, their parents as well as themselves. We want each
Spiritline member to practice, perform, and compete in a healthy, positive learning environment.
Our goal is for each student athlete to develop positive attributes and attitudes in their daily
lives.

We believe in openness (approachability), honesty, loyalty (to your coaches, team, the plan, and
to oneself), dedication to excellence (in life and sport), and fairness (equality when dealing with
others).

We believe in teaching fundamental skills and reinforcing those skills through various teaching
methods and objective goals. Safe habits will be practiced through proper form, performance,
and competition. It is our experience that in order for a coach and student athlete to reach their
top potential they must push and be pushed.

game to attend the boys Away game)
        • Homework/Studies- Everyone has homework and we know that, BUT it is not an excused
absence. As a member of this team, you need to balance school, homework, and cheer/pom.
Academics are a priority and that is why team members are expected to be able to manage
their time without missing practice/spiritline activities.
        • Birthdays are NOT an excused absence.
Ø We do understand that there are exceptions. These exceptions will be discussed between the
    coach, parents/guardians, and squad member.
Ø Excessive absences and tardies from classes currently enrolled may result in a bench, at the
    discretion of the coach.
Ø Spiritline activities will take priority over all other activities, including work, other sports events, and
    all other extra-curricular activities.
Ø We as coaches do our best to have the schedules out in advanced BUT, sometimes-extra practices

successful in the classroom as well as at practice. If you are listed on the ineligibility list (pink sheet)
that the coaches receive a total of three times (this does not have to be consecutive times) you will

Cell Phone Policy
We have a new cell phone policy put in place for competition days. PLEASE
NOTE: This is not to be taken as a punishment!!! But rather away for the girls to
bond as a team and focus on performing their best without any outside
distractions.

On the day of competition, team members will be given two options:
  1. Place their cell phone in the cell phone box (Coaches will keep the box in
their possession all day.) Girls may request to use their phone to reach
parent, have a team photo taken or in the case of an emergency. Phones will
be returned to the girls when they come off the bus at school or leave with
     parents).
  2. Parents can keep the cell phone until the competition day is over.

Should a parent need to contact their daughter for an emergency, etc., they may
do so through their coaches.

In addition, we will be sitting as a team at ALL TIMES. Girls will not be allowed to
walk around in groups of 2-3 unless using the restroom. (Coaches must be notified
when girls are leaving the area for any reason). As coaches, we are responsible for
the girls at competitions and need to know their whereabouts at all times.

Social Media Contract OHS Spiritline

                                               2019-2020

Participation in interscholastic athletics is a privilege. Students wishing to take
advantage of the opportunities presented to them by Sandra Day O’Connor High School
must show a commitment to the athletic program by adhering to the “Social Media
Rule” established by the coaches.

The privilege of competing in spirit line categories such as varsity cheer and Pom at
Sandra Day O’Connor High School requires that each athlete adhere to a number of
conditions that enhance their commitment to her school and community, family,
coaches, and herself.

    1) Any spirit line member posting rude, inappropriate, distasteful images or
comments on any type of social media forum will be asked to leave the team.

    2) Any spirit line member that is reposting images or comments containing rude,
inappropriate or distasteful content on any type of social media will also be asked
       to leave the team.

The coaches have the final decision regarding what is deemed
appropriate/inappropriate. Additional consequences are up to their discretion.

As members of this spirit line, the highest expectations are given to each member of
the team.
Please return the bottom portion and keep the top portion for your records.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I agree to the “Social Media Contract” set by your Coaches and will abide by the
social media rules. I understand the full consequence of not adhering to the
        “Social Media Rule”

OHS Spiritline Candidate Action Plan

Before making a final decision on our ’19-‘20 spiritline, we would like to know
how you plan on doing the following:
   1. How will you help raise the overall work ethic of the team?
   2. In the past, laziness has been an issue. How will you take responsibility for maintaining a
strong, personal work ethic? How will you hold yourself personally accountable for
staying on task and practicing/performing with 100% effort?
   3. How will you overcome: I can’t attitude from either yourself or a teammate?

*Please notice the strong emphasis on “you.” We are not looking for excuses for poor practice
behaviors or for blame to be placed on others. We are looking a personal action plan on your
part to help raise overall team effort. Once the team is determined, your action plan will be filed
and we, the coaches, will hold you accountable to the action plan you created.

•The plan should be typed and checked for spelling and grammar errors.
•Your name should be printed and signed at the bottom.
•There is no length requirement or limit; we are looking for an honest, reasonable
      response.
   • This is worth 20 points on your score sheet.
Captains: Any upper classman (Junior or Senior) that would like to be nominated
for Captain please answer the following:

1) What kind of leader do you want to be?
2) How will you motivate your team?
3) Situation: You see someone on your team doing something inappropriate. What do you do?
4) Why should we pick you as a captain?

*Please note that all rules and regulations are subject to change at the coach’s discretion. *
