2018-2019 Revive The Dream: Fellow Biographies Julianne Bozzo currently works to ensure that all NYC students enter high school reading on or above their grade level as part of Middle School Quality Initiative (MSQI) at the New York City Department of Education. Prior to the DOE, Julianne worked at a variety of educational organizations, including the Opportunity Network, NYU Stern, and a NYC-based charter management organization. Julianne received her MPA from NYU Wagner and her B.A. in Political Science from College of the Holy Cross. In her free time, she volunteers with iMentor and the NYC Chapter of Young Education Professionals (YEP-NYC) and takes yoga and spin classes around NYC. Joanne Cheng is an investment banking analyst at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, with a focus on financial services clients. She grew up in Ontario, Canada and earned her B.A. in Economics from Harvard College. Joanne currently volunteers with Apex For Youth, tutoring elementary students in a test prep program, and previously co-directed Chinatown Afterschool, an intercollegiate organization in Boston serving underprivileged students through homework help and enrichment projects. She spends her free time exploring quaint cafés and street art, and is passionate about finding sustainable solutions to social issues. Ross Dakin is a senior strategist in Global Information Security at Bank of America Merrill Lynch and a Democratic County Committee representative for New York Assembly District 65. Ross recently advised the Microsoft Technology and Civic Engagement team in New York City following his appointment as a White House Presidential Innovation Fellow under the Obama Administration. As a private sector technologist in Silicon Valley, Ross worked in companies spanning various industries, including finance, telecommunications, logistics, and information security. Ross is an Adjunct Lecturer of Computer Science at CUNY Lehman College (Bronx, NY) and sits on the boards of the Santa Clara University School of Engineering (Santa Clara, CA), Creo College Preparatory School (Bronx, NY), and the Farmers Market Coalition. Jasmine Daniels is the Director of Alumni Support for Friends of WHEELS (FOW), a school-based non-profit that provides college access and success programming to the students of Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School in order to increase the likelihood of their success in college and beyond. Managing the Alumni Program, she designs and implements initiatives to ensure WHEELS graduates persist through college and graduate from post-secondary institutions successfully. Jasmine has nearly 10 years' experience in youth development, having provided direct service to at-risk youth by way of academic advising, guidance counseling, and mentorship at the intersection of secondary education and higher education. Jasmine holds a bachelor's degree in social work from Temple University and earned her master's from Columbia University's School of Social Work. Nancy Duan is a Data Technology Analyst at Keyrus US. She graduated from Villanova University with majors in Finance and Management Information Systems. She has previously worked with nonprofits like Goodwill and Educational Alliance, helping them consolidate and derive insight from their data.
Sharlene Frank has worked in Human Resources in multiple fields; non-profit (global NGO’s, local non-profits); for-profit companies (technology), and with a large public university. Currently she works as the Director of Global Human Resources and Administration for Touch Foundation, since 2016. A global HR leader, Sharlene is responsible for leading talent management, organizational development and change management strategies and initiatives. As a member of SHRM and HRCI, Sharlene is a certified SHRM-SCP, SPHR and GPHR member. Sharlene holds an Executive MPA from NYU and an MBA from Bernard M. Baruch College, CUNY. Sharlene graduated with honors with a B.S. in Human Resource Management from the CUNY B.A. Program. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Leadership and Change Management at Antioch University. Marissa Friedman is the manager of middle school history at Success Academy Charter Schools, a network of charter schools with 46 schools around New York City. As manager of the history curriculum, Marissa worked to create the middle school history program from the ground up and currently manages all on-going curriculum programs and leads teacher trainings to help teachers best implement it. In addition to her interest in education, she is passionate about serving New York City more broadly and volunteers with local political organizations as well as at the Museum of the City of New York. Prior to working at Success Academy, she lived in Paris, working as an English teacher and an au pair while studying French and French literature. She earned her BA in American History and Literature from Harvard University, where she helped lead arts education programming for Cambridge, MA public middle school students. Valerie Green Thomas is an instructional Coach and Teacher Leader at MS 390 in South Bronx. She grew up in Jamaica and started her educational journey as a principal in an independent Business school and then as a classroom teacher at two of Jamaica’s prestigious high schools before becoming an international teacher in South Bronx. Teaching in South Bronx has allowed her to participate in many Fellowship Programs and Initiatives that are geared towards improvement in public education for the most vulnerable - The Bethune Fellows, Teaching Matters Fellows, Billion Oyster Project Fellows. She also teaches UFT CTLE courses to teachers and paraprofessionals. Valerie holds a Diploma in Teaching, a Bachelor of Education from the College of Arts Science and Technology; two Master Degrees in Special Education and Middle School Science from City College and a certification in Education Leadership from College of Saint Rose. She believes that education is the backbone of any great nation, and is passionate about education reform for all citizens; Valerie believes that a good education will never decay. Hannah Hansen is a School Evaluation Analyst at the SUNY Charter Schools Institute. The Institute is the largest charter school authorizer in the state of New York, overseeing more than 190 schools. Hannah supports the monitoring of schools through ongoing qualitative and quantitative analysis. Prior to the Institute Hannah spent several years working at charter schools in Rhode Island and New York, this included time as an elementary teacher and talent associate. Hannah holds a BA in Sociology and Women's and Gender Studies from the University of New Hampshire. She went on to earn a masters in Public Policy from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth and a masters in Education from Rhode Island College. Keith Howey is a data nerd and strong believer that data can help improve student outcomes. He is currently the Associate Director of Evaluation and Organizational Learning at PENCIL. Before joining Pencil, Keith worked with Breaking Ground and United Way of New York City to advance the organization's’ data maturity and develop M&E frameworks. He also served in the US Army as a military police officer, which included a tour in Baghdad. He holds a B.A. in Political Science and Sociology from Rutgers University and a M.A. in Sociology from Fordham University. Keith lives in Central New Jersey with his wife, two babies and a wide assortment of plants.
Samantha Lalli is an Assistant Principal at Success Academy Charter Schools. She started her career teaching middle school math, first in Bridgeport, CT by way of Teach For America and then at Harlem Village Academies. Before transitioning from the classroom to school leadership, she spent two years at Columbia Business School earning an MBA (and traveling around the world). Samantha is passionate about all things education and committed to providing high-quality educational opportunities for students from underserved communities and working toward educational equity. Tony Lin manages both product development and data vendor partnerships at DemystData, a fintech startup focused on external data access for data science teams. He also volunteers at Minds Matter as a Mentor. He is a graduate of Georgetown University with a bachelor's degree in Economics and spent his formative years in Massachusetts. Nate Lombardi i s the founder of the Groovy Projects. The Groovy Projects empowers our youth with artistic, interactive and life-changing multimedia projects and curriculum. The curriculum uses pop culture and covers the history of human rights which adheres to the United Nations SDGs. It covers all of the important and relevant social and emotional issues of adolescence. The Groovy Projects have been covered on 20/20, NPR, MTV act, Pix11, Hooplaha.com. Presently The Groovy Projects is creating a celebrity driven international rap competition for students to create a positive digital footprint, learn literary devices and work through their social and emotional issues. Hobbies: Volleyball, Theatre, Movies, Jogging with audiobooks. Diandra Malahoo is a native New York who has been working as a recruiter for a charter school over the past year. Diandra's professional career has been in program management and development for internationally focused non-profits. She is excited to join RTD and learn more about educational policies and its impact on student and teacher success. In her spare time, she loves to travel and read books written by women of color. Karmita Morgan-Randall is a native New Yorker who is known to her family, friends and colleagues as a devoted wife, a loving mother and a dedicated professional. Karmita's life experiences coupled with her work experience has inspired a passion to help those who can not advocate for themselves. She has been a parent for twenty-five years and has worked in the field of human services for over seventeen years. Karmita is currently a co-chair for the Manhattan Borough Based Council because she believes that her experience as a parent, who is knowledgeable in relation to services available to families as well as her professional capabilities, equips her with the ability to provide insight, direction and feedback on how we, as a committee, can improve services for individuals and families coping with mental illness. Professionally, Karmita has a wealth of experience which includes working with some well known community based organizations (Food First in Brooklyn, American Red Cross in Manhattan, KidsPeace in Westchester and Abbott House in Westchester and Children's Village in New York City). Jewish Child Care Association and is currently employed at the Jewish Board. Karmita has held various professional roles throughout her career, up to and including Assistant Director and her current position is Assistant Continuous Performance Improvement Director. In these roles she mostly enjoyed being a strong advocate for youth and families with mental illness as well as ensuring that children and youth service plan needs are being addressed and programmatic standards are in compliance with regulatory organizations. Karmita continues her efforts to make improvements in service serving organizations as well as volunteering in her community. Karmita enjoys writing poetry, attending family events and traveling in her spare time.
Melissa Murphy is a career public educator. After 10 years working in the classroom as a grade 5 teacher, Teacher Leader, and United Federation of Teachers (UFT) Chapter Leader, she was recruited by the Teacher Career Pathways team in the NYCDOE's Teacher Recruitment & Quality Department to serve teachers across the city as a leadership coach. Over the past 3 years she has partnered with Manhattan's District 2 superintendent's office, the Bronx 'Renewal School' initiative, and is currently partnering with the 'Advanced Placement for All' initiative and the Office of Equity and Access. Their vision is to increase teacher retention, capacity, and agency in the service of all students. Last year, she joined the American Federation of Teacher's "Educational Policy & Teacher Leadership" research cohort, focusing on pedagogical training and new-teacher mentoring. Along with her interest in teacher leadership, she is a passionate Columbia-trained STEM educator, who is currently engaged as a technology trainer with Google and the NYCDOE's Division of Instructional and Information Technology. In her spare time, she enjoys needle-point, volunteering at ‘God’s Love, We Deliver’, and exploring the city with friends and family. Stephanie Puentes is a California native currently living in New York City. She received her bachelors from UC Berkeley and her MBA from the University of Southern California. Stephanie is the proud daughter of Mexican immigrants and has had experience working in the nonprofit, government and private sector, which has fueled her passion for helping companies achieve the double bottom line via social impact and cause marketing initiatives. She currently works at Johnson & Johnson in the Global Marketing department focused on innovation for Aveeno Body and Sun Care businesses and is an active member of the Diversity Marketing Team. In her spare time, you can find her researching her next travel destination, reading a good book or heading to the gym. Robert Raglin is a second year Investment Banking Analyst in the Mergers & Acquisitions Group at PJT Partners in New York City. Robert graduated from Cornell University in May 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Information Science and a minor in Business Administration. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, his interest in education policy and reform began during high school. As a result he participated in several organizations during University focused on improving education throughout the greater Ithaca, New York area. Robert’s main education focuses are decreasing the “information gap” across high school students with respect to applying to college as well as increasing awareness about the importance of college test preparation. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with friends, reading different genres of literature, and playing pickup basketball. Ben Rosenblatt: A Seattle native, Ben Rosenblatt has worked in the fine art gallery world for 15 years. With particular expertise in sales and client relationship development, special project coordination, and team management, Ben is looking to pivot his skills to development efforts in the non-profit field. Coming from a family that always prioritized education and exploration, he is eager to dedicate his passion and knowledge to New York institutions devoted to contracting the education gap and empowering students. With a non-traditional education path, he is particularly interested in the intersection of classroom and skills-based, experiential education. Ben lives in Morningside Heights with his wife and one-year old daughter.
Oriana Seastone Stern is the Director of Program Operations at LitWorld, a non-profit that uses literacy as a tool for self-empowerment and advocacy. She oversees partnerships and leads strategic growth of community based programming for kids, families, and local leaders around the world. She developed her love of traveling and language and has followed that passion by living and working in Italy, Brazil, Guatemala, and India. Oriana grew up in New York City and attended NYU, where she received both her bachelor's degree in elementary education and her master's degree in public administration. Oriana also enjoys reading, writing short stories, playing capoeira, and salsa dancing. Victoria Shepard is currently a Director of Learning & Development at Ralph Lauren Corporation, where she focuses on executive development, onboarding, performance management and global learning initiatives. She spent five years prior in strategic HR business partner roles at Ralph Lauren, and previously at Louis Vuitton. Victoria grew up in Connecticut, and was enamored by New York City from a young age. She moved into the city directly after graduating Magna Cum Laude from Gettysburg College in 2011. At Gettysburg, Victoria was a History major and Writing Minor, as well as Recruitment Chair for Chi Omega Sorority. Two years ago, Victoria embarked on a personal development journey that’s included attending seminars and joining various community groups. She is drawn towards meaningful causes such as education, volunteering, mindfulness and mental health. The journey continues, but she is thrilled to learn and ultimately hopes to make a positive difference through Revive the Dream! Alexa Sorden is a native New Yorker raised in Washington Heights. Since, February 2000, Alexa Sorden has served as an educator in New York City Department of Education. Throughout her tenure, she has served as a classroom teacher, Literacy Coach, Director of Achievement and for the past six years, she has served as principal. In 2013, Alexa founded Concourse Village Elementary School located in the South Bronx. The school serves 364 scholars in grades 3K-5th Grade. Alexa has a strong passion and commitment to education, in particular, her goal is to bring quality and rigorous curriculum to all children regardless of their zip code. Alexa is the 2017 Ryan Award winner a prestigious award. The Ryan Award is the first national award honoring transformational school principals in the United States. Awardees are principals of urban schools who have demonstrated accelerated results in underserved schools over a minimum of four years and serve a sizeable percentage of urban, low-income, and minority students. Alexa is a graduate of Teachers College, Columbia University and is a doctoral student at St. John’s University’s pursuing a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership. Suzanne Tran is a native New Yorker currently in Property Management after making a pivot from the events industry. She started her undergrad at Wesleyan University and holds a BA from NYC College of Technology in Hospitality Management. Having been in customer service -oriented roles, she is looking to redefine service for herself by being in service to those in underrepresented communities. Working with youth, addressing the achievement gap has been a strong interest of hers, informed by her own experiences in the NYC public school system and graduating from an education nonprofit, the TEAK Fellowship, during her formative years. In the past, she has been involved in advocacy work around empowering communities-of-color, as well as have led groups, and facilitated workshops. She is excited to become better versed in and determine where she can be an advocate in education reform, as well as engage with others invested in learning about and addressing these inequities. In her spare time, she enjoys doing yoga, reading, volunteering, and traveling.
Program Director Biographies: Nikki Carroll is currently a lead credit analyst at Moody’s Investors Service on the local government team. In this capacity, she does quantitative and qualitative analysis to assess to credit risk of cities, counties, school districts and utilities across the country. Prior to that, at Newark Public Schools, she worked on the strategic allocation of the $800 million budget using a weighted student funding model, overhauling the central office budgeting process, and forecasting and evaluating the financial impact of district wide initiatives. Nikki holds an M.B.A from NYU’s Stern School of Business and holds a B.S in Finance from Morgan State University. She is very interested in education measures that close the achievement gap and level education inequality. Henry Wellington: Henry founded Upbeat - an organization that specializes in data analytics to enhance school leaders' approach to teacher retention. Before starting Upbeat, he supported the implementation of blended learning and evaluation of education technology products for Citizen Schools. Previously, Henry worked with education technology companies to boost their sales and marketing efforts while at Whiteboard Advisors. Henry's classroom experience includes teaching middle school Special Education first in Washington Heights at a district school, MS 322, and then at a charter school, Harlem Village Academies. Henry started his career working on the Obama Campaign outside of Fayetteville, North Carolina in 2008. Laura Patterson is currently an Education Research and Insights Specialist at Teachers Pay Teachers, an edtech company based in New York. Prior to joining TpT, she served at the NYC Department of Education as a Special Projects Manager for iZone and the Analyst for the Office of Strategic Planning. She began her career at Scholastic, where she performed a variety of functions. In addition to broad experience with education organizations on staff, Laura has co-organized Startup Weekend EDU and volunteered and consulted with several local ed-based nonprofits. Laura received her BA in Sociology at Tufts University and her MPA in Nonprofit Management from New York University. Sarah Rosskamm is the President and Founder of Hendy Avenue Consulting, an organization dedicated to supporting states, districts/CMOs and schools in their design and implementation of comprehensive teacher and leader effectiveness strategies. Previously, Sarah was the Senior Director of Talent Development for Achievement First. Sarah joined Achievement First in 2008 as a Broad Resident in Urban Education. Her prior experience includes founding Executive Director of the University of Pittsburgh’s Learning Policy Center and Coro Fellow in Public Affairs. Her classroom experience includes teaching fifth grade during the founding year of the KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy and teaching first grade as a Teach For America Corps Member. Sarah holds a MPM from Carnegie Mellon University and a BA in Human Services from George Washington University. sarahrosskamm@hendyavenue.com Mike Rosskamm (RTD founder) is a Regional Superintendent for Achievement First. Previously, he was the principal at Achievement First Bushwick Middle School, a public charter school in Brooklyn serving 350 students in 5th – 8th grade. He was a Broad Resident in the 2011 – 2013 cohort. Previously, he was a project leader at The Boston Consulting Group’s Chicago office and focused on general strategy projects in addition to public education work. Mike joined BCG after graduating from Kellogg in 2008 as the top student in Management and Strategy. Prior to
Kellogg, he taught high school math to low-income students in the New York City public school system.
