Morristown-Beard School From the Headmaster’s Desk Powerfully prepared for learning and for life R eference Guide Dear Parents, Summer is on the horizon, but it is not too early to prepare for the start of another great school year. We are so pleased to welcome new families to our warm and supportive community, and we look forward to the excitement of having everyone back on campus in the fall. At MBS, we pride ourselves on having an open community and find that new families quickly feel at home and at ease. In that spirit, we have provided a guide to help ensure a smooth and comfortable transition to a new school year. While this publication was designed with our new families in mind, it also serves as a great refresher for our current families. I invite you to take some time to review its contents. Should you have any questions, please reach out to Boni Luna, Head of Middle School, or Darren Burns, Head of Upper School, for more information. I hope you enjoy the rest of this school year. Morristown-Beard School Supporting MBS Powerfully prepared for learning and for life R eference Guide Transforming Our Future—The Campaign for Morristown-Beard School In April 2016, MBS proudly unveiled an ambitious five-year, $20 Transforming Our Future million comprehensive campaign named Transforming Our Future. This comprehensive campaign raised funds for the state-of-the-art Math & Science Facility as well as renovations to the Simon Athletic Center, Rooke Pool, and other capital projects. The campaign is currently raising funds MI L L I ON for the Center for Innovation & Design as well as support for scholarship and endowment, two priorities that are integral to the School’s long-term success. Finally, MBS will continue its community-wide efforts to sustain The Campaign for Morristown-Beard School and build the Morristown-Beard Fund—the School’s annual fund. $20 Million by 2020 $5 Million $ 400,000 New gifts 14.6 $Million Morristown-Beard to Scholarships Capital Fund and Endowment Projects The Morristown-Beard Fund The MB Fund exists for one reason only: to improve the MBS student experience. Every dollar donated supports the expansion of academic and curricular initiatives, arts and athletics programs, and student leadership and service opportunities. While special fundraising for capital projects, endowment, and scholarship bring significant long-term benefits to our School, the MB Fund’s consistent support of today’s student experience is vital to our students’ intellectual and emotional growth and our School’s financial health. The MB Fund helps close the gap between the cost of educating an MBS student and his/her tuition. We respectfully ask every MBS family to support the MB Fund—every year. Scholarship Another important priority for MBS remains scholarship support for students with demonstrated financial need. While annual investment income from the endowment does help limit tuition increases, the overall affordability of an independent school education continues to be a challenging question facing schools throughout the nation. Additional related issues such as diversity and inclusion within the composition of the student body amplify the growing need for scholarship support. 18 Morristown-Beard School • www.mbs.net
Morristown-Beard School Supporting MBS Powerfully prepared for learning and for life R eference Guide Endowment The continual growth of an independent school’s endowment is vital to the long-term financial health of the institution. A robust, well-managed endowment enables independent schools like Morristown- Beard School to strengthen its future aspirations by providing increased support to both unrestricted and restricted needs. Additionally, endowment income will continue to play a key role in helping MBS maintain tuition increases at a lower level than many regional and national peer schools through its support of general operating expenses. Capital Projects An unprecedented decade of philanthropic support for physical improvements to our campus has enabled MBS to provide a rich learning environment that is academically rigorous for our students. Over the past 15 years, MBS has dedicated over $52 million to 16 major building and renovation projects that have been transformative to our 22-acre campus, enhancing its beauty and functionality. From the construction of a 630-seat Performing Arts Center and Middle School to the completion of our 25,000 square foot Math & Science Facility, MBS continues to honor our unwavering commitment to our students and faculty: to provide them with the very best environment and tools for learning, growth and unparalleled success. 19 Morristown-Beard School • www.mbs.net

Morristown-Beard School Athletics Information Powerfully prepared for learning and for life R eference Guide MBS is home to a rich and proud athletics program. Counting teams at the varsity, junior varsity, freshmen, and Middle School levels, Morristown-Beard fields over 50 squads in 20 sports. Our athletics program is both competitive and inclusive; MBS teams consistently challenge for conference and state titles each year while maintaining a no-cut (for athletic ability or sport familiarity) policy.* In addition, our athletics program helps multiple student-athletes continue their academic and athletic careers at NCAA colleges and universities on an annual basis. We encourage every student to try out for athletic teams, whether he or she is an accomplished athlete or new to the sport. Athletics are truly an integral part of the MBS experience. For a complete list of our sports offerings, as well as schedules, coaches, and more, please visit www.mbs.net. Then… Join a team! Attend a game! We promise you’ll be glad you did! Please remember to check the Athletics Calendar frequently for schedule changes. If you have questions about athletics, please contact Joanne Dzama, Director of Upper School Athletics, at jdzama@mbs.net, or Mike Sturgeon, Director of Middle School Athletics, at msturgeon@mbs.net. *Please note that some sports have roster limitations due to state regulations, venue, or transportation con- cerns. 26 Morristown-Beard School • www.mbs.net
Upper School Athletics Morristown-Beard School Welcome Letter Powerfully prepared for learning and for life R eference Guide Dear Parents, I hope this letter finds you excited about your upcoming experience at Morristown-Beard School and the role that athletics will play in your child’s high school years. I certainly look forward to working with you as Upper School Athletic Director. The fall season will be upon us before we know it. Accordingly, I would like to take this opportunity to give you some information that you can reference in the upcoming months. Our Fall season will begin for most sports on Monday, August 13, 2018. These preseason practices will be scheduled individually by each team and will be detailed in letters from the coaches (available in the Parent Portal on May 15, 2018). Our annual Crimson Week will be held August 20-24, 2018. During this week, the MBS Athletic Department sponsors lunch (Monday through Thursday) for all student- athletes. Crimson Week is truly an opportunity to celebrate all fall student-athletes. It’s a great way for all teams to socialize and kick off the Fall season! As each Fall team has their own unique schedules, it is vital for you to read the coaches letters, which will be available in the Parent Portal of the MBS website (www.mbs.net) on May 15, 2018. These letters will provide you with detailed information regarding practice times and equipment needs that are specific to each sport. Although attendance at preseason practices is not mandatory, it is strongly suggested that each student-athlete take part in all preseason practices in order to best prepare for the season. This also is a time for our coaches to evaluate the skill level of all players. Please note that all 9th graders and new students also are expected to attend these practices. I look forward to meeting you all during this upcoming year. If you have any questions regarding the Fall preseason practices, please feel free to call me at (973) 539-3032, ext. 589, or email me at jdzama@mbs.net. Have a great summer, and Go Crimson! Middle School Athletics Morristown-Beard School Welcome Letter Powerfully prepared for learning and for life R eference Guide Dear Parents, Welcome to Morristown-Beard School and Middle School Athletics. I am looking forward to working with you and your children during your time here in our Middle School. As Fall is right around the corner, I would like to take this opportunity to give you some information about the athletic program in the upcoming months. The Middle School Fall sports season will begin shortly after the beginning of school. Please note that there are no summer athletic commitments for Middle School student-athletes. We will have Fall sports sign-ups during the first week of school and will be offering: Field Hockey (Girls), Soccer (Boys and Girls), Tennis (Girls), Flag Football (Co-ed), Cross Country (Co-ed), and Fitness (Co-ed). We have a no-cut policy, so all student-athletes may play the sport of their choice. The Middle School has a policy in which each student is required to participate in a sport or the fitness program every season. The fitness program is an alternative to those who may not be interested in team sports. The dress code for fitness is shorts or sweatpants, t-shirts or sweatshirts, and athletic sneakers. Team uniforms for Fall sports will be distributed in September. The Fall schedule for each sport can be found at http://www.nwjerseyac.com. These schedules may change slightly over the summer, but they will become final on July 1st. I look forward to meeting you and your children during this upcoming year. If you have any questions regarding Fall practices, please feel free to call me at (973) 539-3032, ext. 531, or email me at msturgeon@mbs.net. Have a great summer and Go Crimson! Morristown-Beard School Summer Reading Letter Powerfully prepared for learning and for life R eference Guide Greetings! As Head Librarian I’d like to welcome you to the MBS community. You will soon discover that the library is one of the hubs of activity on campus, yet it is also a space without walls. You can work on your group project, pick out a novel for the reading period, and play a game of chess at one of our tables or use one of our college-level databases or popular e-books from the comfort of your own home. The Anderson Library serves many purposes and we look forward to having you! As you prepare for the new school year, I’d like to introduce you to our Summer Reading Program. Studies have shown that when students are allowed to choose their own books, they are much more satisfied with the reading experience. To that end our program emphasizes choice. Students may select from a wide variety of options in the attached list. In September we will meet in small book discussion groups led by a sponsoring faculty or staff member as well as a junior or senior discussion leader. All students are required to read at least two books over the summer; please spend time with your child reviewing these books and email their top three choices to esalge@mbs.net or pdonahue@mbs.net no later than June 15. For more information on the books including summaries and short videos, check out http://mbs.libguides.com/2018summer. Please send in the choices early as summer reading groups are formed on a first come, first serve basis and we aim to keep the groups relatively small. Once we receive your requests, the student will be notified as to which discussion groups he or she will join. If you have any questions please feel free to email us. We look forward to seeing you in our community this Fall. All the best, Erinn Salge Head Librarian Peter Donahue Summer Reading Coordinator 29 Morristown-Beard School • www.mbs.net
Morristown-Beard School MBS Technology Powerfully prepared for learning and for life R eference Guide Dear Parents, Technology and education have gone hand in hand over the past few decades. We at Morristown-Beard School want to prepare our students to utilize all that technology has to offer and help ready them for life outside of MBS. As part of our approach, we have an iPad 1-to-1 program where each student is required to have an iPad. Having an iPad in the hands of each student helps to enrich and enhance the learning experience at MBS. To help you prepare for the upcoming school year, I have included some useful information about our iPad 1-to-1 program. Also included are the requirements and recommendations for purchasing the iPad, as well as information about using the iPad on the MBS campus. In order for students to be able to use their iPad on our network, they must register their device with the School. Steps for the iPad registration can be found on the Technology Information tab within the Parent Portal on the School’s website (www.mbs.net). The Internet is a very powerful tool if used correctly. Our Technology Acceptable Use Policy is in place to make sure that students are using technology appropriately and safely. To ensure that they know how to navigate their online world, I will be speaking with all freshmen over the course of the year about digital citizenship. This program will help guide the students to ethical and safe participation in the online world. On the following pages, please find our Technology Acceptable Use Policy as well as our Social Media Policy. Both documents can also be found on the School’s website, under Academics at MBS and Educational Technology. If you have any questions regarding technology, please email me at ctrought@mbs.net. Morristown-Beard School MBS Technology (cont.) Powerfully prepared for learning and for life R eference Guide MBS Technology Frequently Asked Questions Q: Who is required to have an iPad for Fall 2018? A: You have the option to purchase your iPad through Apple or any other vendor you choose. Q: Am I entitled to any special discounts when purchasing the iPad? A: The Apple Store provides an education discount if you present an MBS ID or acceptance letter at time of purchase. Q: What’s the difference between Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular?
