174TH COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY 9 The Mace Bearer of the Mace & Shield The Mace, was designed by Professor Alexis Joyner, former Chair of the ECSU Art Department, and unveiled at the installation of Chancellor Mickey L. Burnim on October 18, 1996. The Mace is 70 inches tall and consists of three dynamic centers of significant components. The focal point is a replica of a Viking’s head, cast in bronze, with brass rays extending from the center depicting knowledge, enlightenment, wisdom and democracy; a bronze seal of the University adorns the reverse side. Chosen for its durability and dark, rich color, the Mace’s wooden staff is crafted from black walnut, topped with a hand-turned polished brass finial, and is footed with a base replicating the ancient, time-defying pyramids. The Shield, currently being designed by Professor Joyner, will be revealed in spring 2022. Bearer of the Mace: The student who entered ECSU as a first-time freshman and has the highest cumulative GPA in the graduating class for the prospective commencement exercise. How were we to know we would encounter and endure such ebbs and flows of the river current as we learned more about ourselves and the world by the river’s bend. We not only persevered through a global pandemic, but we also learned the tools to aid us in persevering through life. We may have pivoted, but we did not pause and kept our goal of completing this chapter at the forefront. However, we could not have made this journey without the opportunities, challenges and examples of fearless leadership demonstrated by the staff, faculty and family that is...ECSU. We were taught and required to learn how to be resilient, and ACE everything we have yet to experience. Thank you to Chancellor Karrie Dixon, administrators, faculty, and staff for your incomparable support. We came to discover but we most assuredly are leaving as conquerors. 22 ELIZABETH CITY STATE UNIVERSITY Musical Selection Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing Lift every voice and sing We have come, treading our path through the Till earth and heaven ring, blood of the slaughtered, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Out from the gloomy past, Let our rejoicing rise Till now we stand at last High as the listening skies, Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past God of our silent tears, has taught us, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might Led us into the Sing a song full of the hope that the present has light, brought us, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Facing the rising sun of our new day begun Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, Let us march on till victory is won.* where we met Thee, Stony the road we trod, Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the Bitter the chastening rod, world, we forget Thee; Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, Yet with a steady beat, May we forever stand. Have not our weary feet True to our God, Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? True to our native land. We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, National Anthem The Star Spangled Banner O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light, streaming? What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gleaming, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? *Please be seated.
