Prayers for the Morning

Prelude - Widmung (Dedication) Schumann arr. Listz

The Minister shall read aloud these Sentences of the Scriptures that follow.
Rejoice and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great
in heaven. Luke 6.23.

O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: let the whole earth stand
in awe of him. Psalm 96. 9.

Opening Hymn #439 (Common Praise-Canada)
Blest are the pure in heart,
for they shall see our God;
the secret of the Lord is theirs,
their soul is Christ's abode.

The Lord, who left the heavens
our life and peace to bring,
to dwell in lowliness with us,
our pattern and our King,

still to the lowly soul
his presence doth impart,
and for a dwelling and a throne
chooseth the pure in heart.

Lord, we thy presence seek;
may ours this blessing be:
give us a pure and lowly heart,
a temple fit for thee.

The Minister, turning to the people, shall say the Exhortation in the form following.
DEARLY beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty
God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we
have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his
holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things
that are necessary for our life and our salvation.
And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him,
let us be silent, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins,
that we may obtain forgiveness of the same by his infinite goodness and
mercy.
A general Confession to be said of the whole Congregation with the Minister.
God our Father, long-suffering, full of grace and truth, you create us
from nothing and give us life. You give your faithful people new life in
the water of baptism. You do not turn your face from us, nor cast us
aside. We confess that we have sinned against you and our neighbour.
We have wounded your love and marred your image in us. Restore us
for the sake of your Son, and bring us to heavenly joy, in Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution, or Remission of sins, to be pronounced by the Priest alone.
THE LORD enrich you with his grace, and nourish you with his blessing;
the Lord defend you in trouble and keep you from all evil; the Lord
accept your prayers, and absolve you from your offences, for the sake of
Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Amen

Minister. O LORD, open thou our lips;
People. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise.

Minister. O God, make speed to save us;
People. O Lord, make haste to help us.

Minister. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy
          Ghost;
People. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world
          without end. Amen.

Minister. Praise ye the Lord;
People. The Lord’s Name be praised.
Canticle
                    The Song of Judith
                       Judith 16:1,13-15
                        said together.

                Strike up the instruments,
             a song to my God with timbrels,
             chant to the Lord with cymbals;
                  Sing to him a new song,
                exalt and acclaim his name.

           A new hymn I will sing to my God.
           O Lord, great are you and glorious,
          wonderful in power and unsurpassable.

            Let your every creature serve you;
           for you spoke, and they were made,
     You sent forth your spirit, and they were created;
               no one can resist your word.

  The mountains to their bases, and the seas, are shaken;
      the rocks, like wax, melt before your glance.
              But to those who fear you,
                  you are very merciful.

                GLORY be to the Father,
                      and to the Son,
                 and to the Holy Spirit;
                As it was in the beginning,
                Is now, and ever shall be,
                    world without end.
                           Amen.

                          Psalm 1
                        said together.

Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
or take the path that sinners tread,
                                     or sit in the seat of scoffers;

                            but their delight is in the law of the LORD,
                            and on his law they meditate day and night.

                           They are like trees planted by streams of water,
                                which yield their fruit in its season,
                                   and their leaves do not wither.
                                  In all that they do, they prosper.

                                       The wicked are not so,
                            but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

                       Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
                         nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;

                       for the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,
                               but the way of the wicked will perish.

                                     GLORY be to the Father,
                                           and to the Son,
                                      and to the Holy Spirit;
                                     As it was in the beginning,
                                     Is now, and ever shall be,
                                         world without end.
                                                Amen.

          Hymn #600 ( The Book of Common Praise (Revised 1938) )
          This is my Father’s world,
          and to my listening ears
all nature sings, and round me rings
the music of the spheres.
This is my Father’s world,
I rest me in the thought
of rocks and trees, of skies and seas,
His hand the wonders wrought.

This is my Father’s world;
the birds their carols raise;
the morning light, the lily white,
declare their Maker’s praise.
This is my Father’s world,
He shines in all that’s fair;
in the rustling grass I hear him pass,
He speaks to me everywhere.

This is my Father’s world,
O let me ne’er forget
that though the wrong seems oft so strong,
God is the Ruler yet.
This is my Father’s world,
the battle is not done,
Jesus, who died, shall be satisfied,
and earth and heaven be one.

The Creed.
All. I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty,
          Maker of heaven and earth:
          And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
          Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
          Born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
          Was crucified, dead, and buried:
          He descended into hell;
          The third day he rose again from the dead;
          He ascended into heaven,
          And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
          From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
          The holy Catholic Church;
          The Communion of Saints;
          The Forgiveness of sins;
          The Resurrection of the body,
          And the Life everlasting.
          Amen.

Minister. The Lord be with you;
People.   And with thy spirit.

Minister. Let us pray. Lord, have mercy upon us.
People. Christ, have mercy upon us.

Minister. Lord, have mercy upon us.
All. OUR Father who art in heaven,
          Hallowed be thy Name,
          Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done,
          on earth as it is in heaven.
          Give us this day our daily bread;
          And forgive us our trespasses,
          As we forgive them that trespass against us;
          And lead us not into temptation,
          But deliver us from evil.
          For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory,
          For ever and ever. Amen.

Priest.   From age to age my mouth will proclaim your faithfulness;
          your love, O Lord, for ever will I sing.
People.   From age to age my mouth will proclaim your faithfulness;
          your love, O Lord, for ever will I sing.

Priest.   I am persuaded that your love is established for ever;
          you have set your faithfulness firmly in the heavens.
People. Your love, O Lord, for ever will I sing.

Priest. The heavens bear witness to your wonders, O Lord,
          and to your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones.
People. Your love, O Lord, for ever will I sing.
Priest.    Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe;
           for the sake of your name, lead me and guide me.
People. Your love, O Lord, for ever will I sing.

Priest. Who is like you, Lord God of hosts?
           O mighty Lord, your faithfulness is all around you.
People. Your love, O Lord, for ever will I sing.

Priest. Righteousness and justice are the foundations
           of your throne; love and truth go before your face.
People. Your love, O Lord, for ever will I sing.

The Collect of the Day.
ALMIGHTY and EVERLIVING God, whose Son Jesus Christ healed the
sick and restored them to wholeness of life, look with compassion on the
anguish of the world, and by your power make whole all peoples and
nations; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Second Collect, for Peace.
O GOD, who is the author of peace and lover of concord, in knowledge
of whom stands our eternal life, whose service is perfect freedom: Defend
us your humble servants in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely
trusting in your defence, may not fear the power of any adversaries;
through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Third Collect, for Grace.
O LORD our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who has
safely brought us to the beginning of this day: Defend us in the same with
your mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run
into any kind of danger; but that all our doings may be ordered by your
governance, to do always that is righteous in your sight; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Summary of the Law.
Our Lord Jesus Christ said: hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord;
and you shall love the Lord thy God with all your heart, and with all your
soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first
and great commandment. And the second is like it: you shall love your
neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and
the prophets.
People: Lord, have mercy upon us, and write both these your laws in
           our hearts, we beseech you.

Reflection

Intercessions

A General Thanksgiving, to be said by the Minister and people together.
Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all you have done for us.
We thank you for the splendour of the whole creation, for the beauty of
this world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love.
We thank you for the blessing of family and friends, and for the loving
care which surrounds us on every side.
We thank you for setting us tasks which demand our best efforts, and
for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy and delight us.
We thank you also for those disappointments and failures that lead us
to acknowledge our dependence on you alone.
Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the truth of his
word and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which
he overcame temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame
death; for his rising to life again, in which we are raised to the life of
your kingdom. Grant us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know
Christ and make him known; and through him, at all times and in all
places, may give thanks to you in all things. Amen.
A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom.
ALMIGHTY God, who has given us grace at this time with one accord to
make our common supplications to you; and promises that when two or
three are gathered together in your Name you will grant their requests:
Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of your servants, as may be
most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of your
truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

                                Poem
                             Twice Blessed
                               David Whyte

So that I stopped
there
and looked
into the waters
seeing not only
my reflected face
but the great sky
that framed
my lonely figure
and after a moment
I lifted my hands
and then my eyes
and I allowed myself
to be astonished
by the great
everywhere
calling to me
like an old
and unspoken
invitation,
made new
by the sun
and the spring,
and the cloud
and the light,
like something
both
calling to me
and radiating
from where I stood,
as if I could
understand
everything
I had been given
and everything ever
taken from me,
as if I could be
everything I have ever
learned
and everything
I could ever know,
as if I knew
both the way I had come
and, secretly,
the way
underneath
I was still
promised to go,
brought together,
like this, with the
unyielding ground
and the symmetry
of the moving sky,
caught in still waters.

Someone I have been,
and someone
I am just,
about to become,
something I am
and will be forever,
the sheer generosity
of being loved
through loving:
the miracle reflection
of a twice blessed life.

Concluding Hymn #373 (Common Praise-Canada)
This is the day the Lord hath made,
its hours to God are known;
let heaven rejoice, let earth be glad,
and praise surround the throne.

Today Christ rose and left the dead,
and Satan's empire fell;
today the saints his triumph spread,
and all his wonders tell.

Hosanna to the anointed King,
to David's holy Son!
Help us, O Lord; descend and bring
salvation from thy throne.

Hosanna in the highest strains
the church on earth can raise;
the highest heavens in which he reigns
shall give him nobler praise.
