Sudoku Answers on page 11 Sudoku requires no calculation or arithmetic skills. It is essentially a game of placing numbers in squares, using very simple rules of logic and deduction. The objective of the game is to fill all the blank squares in a game with the correct numbers. There are three very simple constraints to follow. In a 9 by 9 square Sudoku game: • Every row of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order • Every column of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order • Every 3 by 3 subsection of the 9 by 9 square must include all digits 1 through 9 Every Sudoku games begins with a number of squares already filled in, and the difficulty of each game is largely a function of how many squares are filled in. The more squares that are known, the easier it is to figure out which numbers go in the open squares. As you fill in squares correctly, options for the remaining squares are narrowed and it becomes easier to fill them in. Bricktown Corner Cafe - December 2021 3

How can the Black and Jewish communities build stronger ties? That was the question at hand during a recent showing of “Shared Legacies” on Monday, November 1st at the Grunin Center for the Arts at Ocean County College – as part of the Ocean Jewish Film Festival sponsored by the Jewish Federation. The documentary highlighted the African American - Jewish civil rights alliance that existed for decades, based on the two communities’ shared experiences with persecution, slavery, and ongoing bigotry. The film featured interviews with leading Black and Jewish leaders in the civil rights movement, describing how close the bonds of friendship and partnership were between leaders in the two communities. This screening was followed by a panel discussion featuring civil rights activist Don Olivaria, Bahiyyah Abdullah the President of the Toms River area chapter of NAACP, and Rabbi Stephen Gold of Beth Am Shalom in Lakewood. They each spoke on how both communities can focus more on what unites rather than what divides, which seems to be a growing theme in our politics and society these days. Rabbi Gold spoke about the historic ties that united the Black and Jewish communities, both in terms of shared values and on the receiving end of bias and bigotry. He bemoaned how today some seek to paint Jews and Israel as oppressors today when that has not been the case historically. Bahiyyah talked about the need to get to know each other better and to educate ourselves – about the issues and the other. Don spoke about how he went to march with Dr. Martin Luther King in Selma…to meet girls. He also had a profound experience which shaped his view of civil rights and led to decades of activism promoting equality and respect in society. Bahiyyah stressed that it’s important to understand each other’s pain. The need for empathy between people and communities is critical, since: “If it can happen to you, it can happen to me.” Several of the questions to panelists centered on efforts to suppress voting rights today – and how bigotry still manifests itself, even in Ocean County. The recent incident of a KKK-resembling ghost being displayed at a house with Confederate flags in Jackson came up, as did rumors of a KKK meeting locally. Keith Krivitzky, who moderated the panel for the Jewish Federation, pointed out that despite its small size, NJ has one of the highest number of hate groups anywhere in the country, and emphasized that one takeaway from this discussion is the importance of being an upstander, and not just standing by when you see hate. He also indicated that, “The Jewish Federation is committed to working with partners to help counter hate in our community, which is why we will be honoring local Heroes Against Hate at our upcoming Community of Caring event in December and partnering with the Center for Human Rights, Holocaust, and Genocide Education (Chhange) to bring educational resources combatting hate to our local schools.” Close to 100 community members attended the program, including representatives from the NJ State Attorney General’s Office, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, the local Human Relations Committee, the Toms River Police Department – and others. Support for the program was provided by the Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission and the Jewish Federation, thanks to several sponsors. Holiday Images It’s time to prepare for the holidays - Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Years. The main subjects are family and friends. I run this article every December because I think this is a good time for a review. This time of year we often see relatives and loved ones that we haven’t seen for a while. We want to capture the festive atmosphere and good time that everyone is enjoying. What can we do to make these images look relaxed and more professional? For candid shots make certain you’re prepared -- have thirds (also from a previous photo tip). Rather than your camera ready and watch the subject for the placing your subjects in front of the Christmas tree, expression you want. These often make fun shots and can be used on your holiday cards next year. Don’t forget the rule of 16 Bricktown Corner Cafe - December 2021
