Program Notes
Andre Grétry (1741-1813)
Plus de depit, Plus de tristesse from Les deux Avares (1770)
Duration: 3 minutes, 20 seconds
André Ernest Modeste Grétry was born February 1741 in present day
Belgium but took French nationality and passed away in September of
1813. He composed around 50 operas in his lifetime and Les deux avares
is an opéra bouffon written when he was 27 years old. This opera is about
two greedy men named Martin and Gripon who come up with a scheme to
find treasure in a pyramid in Smyrna. Henriette is the niece of Gripon and
Jérôme is Martin’s clerk. In this aria, Henriette is singing about how all of
her riches are with her love, Jérôme, and not silver and gold like Martin and
Gripon.

Franz Liszt (1811-1886)
Oh! Quand je dors (1842)
Duration: 5 minutes
Franz Liszt was a Hungarian composer and pianist who was born in
October 1811 and passed July 1886 in the Kingdom of Bavaria in the
German Empire. At the time this piece was composed, Liszt was doing a
lot of traveling and performing as a pianist. This piece is also one of seven
songs Liszt set to Hugo’s poetry. Oh! Quand je dors is about dreaming of
that person you love and having them arrive to you in the dream, setting
your soul on fire.

Claude Debussey (1862-1918)
Voici que le printemps (1884)
Duration: 7 minutes
Claude Debussy was one of the most influential composers of the late
19th and early 20th centuries. Born to a middle-class family in 1862, he
was admitted to the Conservatoire de Paris at the age of 10. Voici que le
Printemps is a poem of romance by Paul Bourget; Debussy frequently set
music to Bourget’s poetry. Voici is about loving nature and uses flowery
descriptors to show the beauty and liveliness of the Spring.

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
Vier Lieder, Op. 96 (1884)
Duration: 10 minutes, 30 seconds
Johannes Brahms was a German composer born in 1833 who spent most
of his professional life in Vienna where he would pass in 1897. Brahms was
known to call his song cycles “bouquets” because of the text, tonality, and
other reasons that came to make them one beautiful “bouquet” of songs.
This song cycle is a journey of a beginning love, from the feeling of not

knowing what to say to the person, hearing love songs as you fall asleep,
then feeling contented whenever you’re together.

Gaetono Donizetti (1797-1848)
O luce di quest’anima from Linda di Chamounix (1842)
Duration: 5 minutes, 30 seconds
Gaetano Donizetti was a leading composer of the bel canto opera style
period. At the time of the composition of Linda di Chamounix, Donizetti’s
family was trying to persuade him to take up a teaching job in Bologna
rather than go to Vienna so that he wouldn’t constantly be traveling while
his health declined, but he refused. This aria occurs in Act 1 when Linda
and Carlo planned to meet but she had just missed him; she then
continues to sing about how her and Carlo will be united forever.

Florence Price (1887-1953)
An April Day (1949)
Duration: 1 minute, 30 seconds
Florence Price was an African American composer in the 20th century and
she is noted as the first African American woman to be recognized as a
symphonic composer. She composed over 300 works and An April Day is
just one of over 100 vocal works. This piece is yet again a love song to the
beauty of nature.

William Grant Still (1895-1978)
The Breath of a Rose (1928)
Duration: 2 minutes, 45 seconds
William Grant Still was an African American composer of almost 200 works.
He was considered to have been a part of the Harlem Renaissance, which
is further proved by his multiple collaborations with Langston Hughes. The
Breath of a Rose is a metaphor for fleeting love. Every line of the piece is
a different example of how fleeting love is and the music represents the
heartbreak of each lyric.

Amy Marcy Cheney Beach (1867-1944)
3 songs, Op. 78 (1917)
Duration: 4 minutes
Amy Marcy Cheney Beach was an American composer of the 20th century
and her “Gaelic” Symphony was the first symphony composed and
published by an American woman. She wrote about 150 songs and
Meadowlarks was one of the pieces that featured poetry by a woman.
An interesting motif in this piece is the exact reproductions of California lark
songs in the accompaniment throughout.

Frederick Loewe (1918-1986)
The Simple Joys of Maidenhood from Camelot (1960)
Duration: 3 minutes, 15 seconds
Camelot the musical is based on the legend of King Arthur and was
adapted by Alan Jay Lerner from T.H. White’s “The Once and Future King,”
with music by Frederick Loewe. Julie Andrews originated the role of
Guenevere who is desiring “The Simple Joys of Maidenhood.” She doesn’t
like the idea of becoming Queen and wants to live an ordinary life or at least
her idea of ordinary.

Michael Kooman and Christopher Dimond (b.1984)
Out of My Head (2011)
Duration: 4 minutes
Kooman and Dimond are Emmy nominated songwriters with multiple stage
musicals and are also known for their cabaret material which is where this
piece comes from. “Escapism and emotional repression are not exactly
unfamiliar themes for us,” is what Kooman and Dimond have to say about
“Out of My Head” and there is no better way of explaining the piece.

Jeanine Tesori (b. 1961)
The Girl in 14G (2001)
Duration: 4 minutes, 30 seconds
Jeanine Tesori composed this piece with lyrics by Dick Scanlan and it is
based on Kristin Chenoweth’s real experiences of first moving to New York
City with her noisy neighbors. This piece explores three different styles
of singing and uses music from Tristan und Isolde, Swan Lake, and the
“Queen of the Night” aria from The Magic Flute.
