Project: Nicholas Kirkwood industry collaboration (Year 2) Brief: Create a range of 6 designs for Nicholas Kirkwood for 2025 Outcome: Digital delivery (Covid 19) Designwork Initial sketches, 3D experimentation, development and final design. Curves and Lines Taking architect Oscar Niemeyer as initial inspiration for the range with sculptural lines and curves lead to incorporating ‘Brass and String’ pieces by Barbara Hepworth for this design. Taking sketchbook development further from styles inspired by Niemeyer’s pilotis at Alvorada and Barbara Hepworth’s sculptures. Baroque Derby inspired by 18th Century decorated commode Trying different soles to add height with a platform - still comfortable, everyday shoe. below, this design taken from sketchbook to develop and simplify Quarter and counter lines are taken from the decorative applique metalwork on the commode Design work examples - sketchbook, development and other final designs Examples with closed toe - keeping the baroque cut out counter but closing front quarter - simplified for more commercial designs. Colourways explore pastel metallic through to more commerical use with graphite black. The shoe offers a comfortable everyday shoe option for women whilst making a statement about power and femininity. Raised elements created through moulding and padding in line with the thermo-fusion padding trend. development Multi-sectional design based on Filippo Negroli’s 15th century breastplate taken from sketchbook for deveopment Sole profiles relate to armour ‘lames’ and crocodile teeth. Inspiration: Breastplate by Filippo Negroli 15th century Colour blocking trend works well with the sections and overlays. Trying out different configurations of the holding straps/fronds. Design opportunities in the sole to link to armour ‘lames’ design and reptilian Knitted sock added to ankle/foot entry for added warmth in winter effect relating to the crocodile The transformative qualities of armour giving strength and power coupled with agility and articulation are lent to sports footwear.
