Thank you from all of us at Chalkwell for the patience and support you have shown us. Your loyalty has not gone unnoticed and we are extremely grateful to you for that. We have tried to make our new DayBreak programme as varied as we can but as always there are some old favourites returning. Southend on Sea will once again feature as will the ever-popular trip to the Isle of Wight and Rye for some Market Day bargains. Or, if you fancy some sun, take a look at one of the seaside specials we have planned, there’s lots to choose from in 2021. After listening to your feedback, you’ll see some days out that you’ve requested. The Bombay Sapphire gin distillery, trips to Lavenham and Knebworth House, the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway and the Imperial War Museum at Duxford. Once again, we are also championing the delights of our own county with trips to the Maidstone Distillery, the Cinque Ports with Chris Goode and our very own county show at Detling Showground. The building still retains many of its original historic features. It is situated on the banks of the River Medway in the centre of Maidstone. The River Medway with riverside walks bounds the Archbishops Palace to the rear. Some people choose to arrive at the venue by boat or river bus. To the front of the palace, the walled Apothecary’s Garden offers a secluded and peaceful area for photographs. The garden uses a cornucopia of herbs to form an unusual and interesting background. 10

Although Moules-frites are popular in many countries, it is thought that the dish originated in Belgium. It is likely that it was originally created by combining a popular and cheap food eaten around the coast and fried potatoes which were commonly eaten around the country in winter when no fish or other food was available. The Moules are often served ‘Marinière’ (White Wine, Shallots, Parsley & Butter) but there are many varients that can all be recommended such as Natural (Celery, Leeks & Butter); à la bière (Bruges Beer); à la crème (Cream, White Wine & Butter).... all not to be missed! 14

Guildford Castle & Gardens Saturday 6th March 2021 ADULT 35 Visit Guildford Castle and head to the top of the Great Tower for a 360-degree panoramic view of Guildford and the beautiful surrounding countryside. The SENIOR 34 Tower contains a model of the original castle circa 1300, and interpretation CHILD 33 panels tracing its history to the present day. The grounds at Guildford Castle ROUTE 4S were opened as public gardens in 1888 to mark Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee of the previous year. The gardens are extremely popular, displaying an amazing array of colourful bedding, centred on the 11th Century Castle Keep. Other attractions include a life-size statue of Alice Through the Looking Glass, a bowling green, music concerts in the bandstand and the town’s war memorial. Strawberry Hill House & Gardens Wednesday 10th March 2021 ADULT 53 On this DayBreak, you will take a guided tour around the 18th century gothic creation of writer, collector and wit Horace Walpole and this is no ordinary SENIOR 52 stately home. Once inside, you will find the rooms magically lit by unique CHILD 50 renaissance glass with a gloomy castle-like hall and gothic staircase leading ROUTE 2S dramatically to colourful spaces including a magnificent gallery and other 16 staterooms. The afternoon drive CHILD 50 will take you along the foot of the South Downs to Fareham before heading north up the idyllic Meon Valley and on to a tea halt in the interesting town of Petersfield. ROUTE 1S The iconic Titanic A Titanic Day Out Monday 15th March 2021 Start your day with a light lunch (included) at the Sea City Museum, before ADULT 35 meeting your guide for a fascinating tour. Learn more about Rye’s literary roots on a visit to Rye House now owned by the National Trust. The house was home to American author Henry James who wrote three of his novels whilst living in Rye. Mapp and Lucia author E.F. Benson also lived here and based the imaginary town of Tilling on Rye. Lamb House was used as the film location of ‘Mallards’ the home of Miss Mapp. Radclyff Hall and Conrad Aitken were both residents in Rye as was John Ryan who created the ‘Captain Pugwash’ stories. Spike Milligan of the fabled ‘Goon’ radio show was also another famous resident of the town. 20

They are very easily identifiable from a characteristic ‘pie crust’ edge and claws and legs which are black tipped. They get their wonderful, unique taste from the good conditions in the areas. The seabed in Cromer is in relatively shallow water therefore, they filter in clean water. These conditions help the taste of crabs. The water is filled with nutrients so the crabs are particularly flavoursome, fragrant, and tender. This environment helps to support a high proportion of clean-living smaller crustaceans, molluscs, and bivalves, which the crabs feed on. 34

Henry VIII decided that the Tower should be protected by part of the royal bodyguard. These ‘Yeoman Warders’ were eventually granted the right to wear the splendid red uniform, which today is known as the state dress uniform and is worn on state occasions such as the monarch’s birthday. The more durable everyday dark blue ‘undress’ uniform was introduced in the 19th century. Today’s Yeoman Warders need to have at least 22 years’ military service. Apart from that, they need to have reached the rank of warrant officer and to have been awarded the long service and good conduct medal. 40
