Winthrop Beach Rules Tennis & Basketball Court Use Lifeguards will be on Duty Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm LIGHTS Sat and Sunday Noon to 5pm • Lights can be turned on at 6:00pm • Press the button on the far side of the courts. • They will stay on for 1 hour then you will need to WINTHROP BEACH IS A hit button again. • Lights must go off at 10:00pm TOBACCO FREE ZONE No smoking (including E-Cigarettes) on Town Beach 1. Monday to Friday 7:30am to 5:30pm (May drop off and pick up anytime in those hours.) FEE: $33.00 per day ($5.00 discount per day for additional child) $150.00 for full 5-day week ($135.00 for each additional child) Looking for something to do with your school-age children during the summer? Send them to Winthrop’s Summer Kids Day Camp! This is an All-Day program that gives them access to all the recreation run programs as well as many more planned by the Kids Club staff. Dates & Times- This is an 8-week program that will start the week of June 17th. Monday through Friday the hours are from 7:30 - 5:30. A Typical Day at Kids Club-In the morning we have breakfast provided for FREE by the school! Then we head on down to the rec area for Games, Lessons and Arts & Crafts. The afternoon is programmed by the Kids Club staff where we spend time at the Winthrop Public Beach, for swimming. We also have organized activities, reading, playground and free time. Lunch is also provided for FREE! Make sure you pack your child with sunscreen because we take full advantage of a sunny day! LOCATION: Summer Kids Club will be based out of the Winthrop Grade School gym using the side entrance by the small, visitor parking lot. This location will provide ample opportunities in the event of inclement weather and it is also near the other summer recreation activities. ACTIVITIES: Morning programming will be integrated into the existing Summer Recreation Program which includes: Arts and Crafts, Tennis, and other Sports. Afternoon Activities will be schedule by the staff and overseen by the onsite Director. Programming will include reading time, group activities, and playground play. SWIM LESSONS: If you would like your child to take swim lessons you must commit to being at Kids Club for the 3-week swim lesson session and your child will walked by a staff member to beach each day for lessons. You will need to pay the $10.00 swim lesson fee. DO NOT SIGN UP ON SWIM LESSON PROGRAM, use only the Swim Lesson section on Kids Club Form COOKING PROGRAMS & YOGA PROGRAM: If your child would like to be a part of these special programs you must sign up on Kids Club registration, these programs have limited # of spots available. There will also be an additional cost for participation in these programs. OUTINGS: This year we will do a couple of outings as a Kids Club, we will go bowling at 1-7-10 in Augusta and in August we will attend a Sea Dogs game. These will be activities for ALL Kids Club folks that day. There will be an additional cost for each activity. DAY FEE: This year we will offer a per day fee, so you can come for one or two days per week. Fees will be paid on Friday or your last day of participation for the week. Those not paying after 2 weeks will be accessed a late fee of $10.00 per week. Demonstrate Alternative Breathing Float/glide unsupported and recover for 5 seconds on front and back Swim underwater 3 body lengths Rhythmic breathing with or without support and bob 10 times Demonstrate a stride jump entry Step off side into chest deep water and recover to vertical position. Demonstrate Long Shallow Dive Flutter kick on back with or without support Breast stroke for 10 yds Show finning on your back Side Stroke for 10 yds & Elementary Backstroke for 25 yds Show crawl position Front Crawl for 50 yds Flutter kick on front with or without support Butterfly dolphin kick 10 yds with or without a kickboard. Every day we have Arts and Crafts, rain or shine you can come to the Recreation Building and be a part of a hands-on project. It could be painting, clay, beads, tie-dye and much more. Program is for any Boys and Girls 4 and older. We would like to limit classes 20 or fewer, so you can sign up for classes at either 9:00am or 10:00am This year we would like to offer a class for anyone with Special needs. We will run the program 2 or 3 days a week, but we must have at least 1 person who is committed to participating so our staff will be prepared. That class will be at 11:00am Cost for Arts and Crafts is $1.00 per day Or $20.00 for the full summer
A great chance to learn to play tennis or improve your skills. A fun time in a group lesson with others in your age group. Held on the Tennis Courts in Winthrop, our instructors offer an introductory tennis lesson. We will have lessons for Children ages 5 to 14, and for the first time a session for High School and Middle School age players to come and play each day. We have some racquets available. This is a chance to learn about a great life sport We will have 2 classes each day: 9:00am Ages 10 to 14 10:00am Ages 5 to 9 Our plan is to have 3-Two Week Sessions Session A—June 15th to June 26th Session B---June 29th to July 10th Session C—July 13 to July 24th
JULY 6th to 9th FEE: $25.00 9:00am for Grades 2-3-4 10:00am for Grades 5-6-7-8 Take a journey around the world by creating some healthy recipes, having fun, learning to cook, and eating the snack each day. Debbie Barnett from the University of Maine Cooperative Extension will be your guide. Learn to make healthy food choices when cooking and eating. Both levels are totally hands-on and yes, we do eat what we cook!!!! In past years we have made Massaged Kale Salad from the fields of Maine, Herb Garden Pizza from the Italian Countryside, Black Bean Brownies from the Top of the Matterhorn (Switzerland - chocolate), and Fresh Veggie Spring Rolls from Mainland China. Sample foods that are good for you, good tasting, and easy to make. We will also learn food safety, nutrition, preparation and cooking tips. This will be a hands-on learning AND you get to eat what we make. It will be held at the Recreation Building, Limit of 10 per class, first come basis. Please let us know of ANY food allergies.
Session 1: June 29th to July 2nd 9:00am to 9:45am Cost $25.00 per participants Ever wanted to try Yoga, here is a great chance to learn how to stay centered and work on relaxation and improving your overall health. This program is for children age 8 to 18. Winter Adams of owner of Mantra Maine will lead this new and fun program offering. Winter would like to have classes of no larger than 25 students, and we must have a minimum of 5 people. When you complete your application, you are asked to give a 2-3 sentence explanation of why you are interested in taking a yoga program. We will have 2 Scholarships donated by fellow yogis
Monday-Wednesday-Thursday Session 1: June 22nd to June 25th Session 2: July 27th to July 30th Cost $50.00 per session 9:00-10:30 Drawing Class We will cover the basics of drawing, shading, shape, value, contour, reference images, realism, abstraction representational imagery and use of a variety of materials. There will be a brief and gentle critique at the end of each class, and we will learn to be constructive, respectful and helpful to viewers of art. 11:00-12:30 Painting Class We will use a variety of mediums and paint surfaces, explore many different techniques, and learn about different painting styles. I like to include stories about art and artist in lessons as well. We will learn about painting en plein aire, and study a variety of painting subjects. We will have gentle critique at the end of each class. 1:00-2:00 Art Experiments This class will be dedicated to conducting interesting art experiments, and practicing making art in unconventional ways. This is also a time when children can design a project of their choice. I will guide them in accomplishing the vision they have for their project. We will explore the art of keeping sketchbooks Minimum of 5 per class limited to 15
Age Groups: 8 &Under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 Practices: Mon. & Wed. 9:00 - 10:30am Meets: Thursdays 10:00am Fee: $45.00 (Includes USATF Registration & Meet Fees) Register by June 10th to ensure a team shirt by the first meet!! (Shirt cost $15.00) Coach Van Tassel will once again lead the Winthrop Rec Ramblers Track and Field Club this summer. The team participates in the USA Track and Field Association's youth program. The team is for any Girl or Boy age 7 to 14 who would like to be a part of a Track Team. The team will practice twice a week, Monday and Wednesday from 9 to 10:30 am. Practices will provide participants an opportunity to improve their skills in all events. (Running, Jumping, and Throwing) Meets are once a week on Thursdays at 10:00 am and last between 2 to 3 hours. Each athlete gets to choose 3 or 4 events to compete in each week. The season culminates with a qualification meet in which the top 4 athletes in each event qualify to participate in the state meet (August 8th, Location - TBD). We look forward to meeting the team this summer and having a ton of fun participating in this great sport. 1st time Participants will need a copy of their Birth Certificate to register. More detailed information will be emailed out to all registered participants (will include meet & practice schedule, USATF Registration Info, and much more). The outdoor pickleball courts will be open Monday to Friday 9:00am to noon. Simply come into the Rec Building and get nets, paddles and balls. Also Monday nights from 5:00-7:00pm The courts in the old skate park are reserved for Adult Pickleball. The court on the back-basketball court is only available when there is no one using that area for Tennis or Basketball.
Come learn about lakes this summer aboard the OTTER II, the Friends 22’ pontoon boat “floating classroom”, where children experience interactive, hands-on, FUN activities that focus on watershed protection and water quality. Five levels of these popular programs are offered for youth in grades 2-12 and adults of all ages!! Tadpole Patrol is for children entering grades 2-3-4. Participants are introduced to lake ecology through exploration, observing of wildlife, and learning the basics of water testing with professional equipment. Each child will earn a Tadpole Patrol badge, t-shirt and prize grab bag, and each session can accommodate up to (10) children. TP II-LSI! (Lake Science Investigators) is for kids entering grades 4-5-6. Building on the fundamentals covered in Tadpole Patrol, participants are placed in the role of “science investigator” as they observe the lake ecosystem, conduct water quality tests and record their data in their own keepsake journal. Binoculars will help identify species living above the water, while an underwater camera will be used to ‘spy’ on aquatic life living beneath the surface. Participants will also begin to learn about identifying native and non-native plant species. Each participant will receive a waterproof knapsack and LSI Journal, and each session can accommodate up to (8) kids. TP 3 – Jr. Lake Monitors is for youth entering grades 6 and up. Designed for youth who have previously experienced Tadpole Patrol I and II (although not required), TP3 participants are educated in proper water quality data measurement techniques and conduct precise measurements themselves, then analyze and compare their results against data recorded by the Cobbossee Watershed District over the past 30+ years. Results will be posted on the Friends website for others to observe, with an option for each Jr. Monitor to have their data be personally recognized. Participants will receive a certificate of achievement, and each session can accommodate up to (8) young adults. Family Tadpole Patrol! Here is a Tadpole Patrol experience for the whole family! During an hour and half long excursion, “kids of all ages” will be engaged in observing wildlife above and below the water, learn and share information about the human and natural history of the lake, and use some of our water monitoring equipment. What a fun experience for you and your child/grandchildren/friend to have together! Each session can accommodate up to (10) people. Spotter’s Amphibious Adventure! What better way to explore the watershed than to explore both land and water! Cruise aboard the OTTER II to a private island in the middle of the lake. Once on the island we will explore, learn about the importance of riparian areas for wildlife, the benefits of preserving wild spaces, and the basics of the “Leave No Trace” method of enjoying nature. Offered on Cobbossee and Annabessacook Lake and open to children ages 8 and up. This will be an outstanding opportunity to have players learn new skills, improve their game, and just have some fun playing baseball. Players are asked to bring their own glove, and if they have a bat. Please put your name on everything you bring. Dress for a day of baseball
July 6th to 10th (Mon to Fri) 9:00am to 2:30pm (Friday 9:00-12:00) FEE: $125.00 Camp will be held at the Winthrop High School Gym This camp is for Boys Grades 2 to entering 9th grade. Winthrop HS Boys Basketball coach Todd MacArthur and members of the 2 time Gold Ball winning State Championship team will run a week-long camp. It will be a great opportunity for all players to come and improve their skills. Players will get more time working on skills, and do game improving drills and playing games. Players will learn better offensive skills including ball handling and shooting, they will also learn Rambler Defense. A week of fun every basketball player no matter if experienced or first year player. We hope to include games with other Rec Depts, and a Friday cookout.

July 6th to 10th 8:00am to 11:30am FEE: $45.00 Camp will be held at the Winthrop High School Field Hockey Field. This camp is for Girls Grades 1 to 9. Winthrop HS Jess Merrill and members of the Class C State Runner Ups High School team will lead a week of skill instruction and fun games. If you are new to Field Hockey or an experienced player this will be a great week. Players will need mouth guards, and shin guards. Players should also bring water or drink for each day. Minimum of 15 participants to hold the camp so please sign up early.
July 22nd and 23rd 5:00-6:30pm FEE: $20.00 Camp will be for those eligible for Flag Football boys and girls. Camp will be help on Clough Field It is an introduction to the game of Flag football and may want to play in the fall. Travis Peaselee and other coaches will lead this clinic. Coaches have asked that players come to the Youth Football camp on Thursday July 24th at around 6:00pm to watch the 7 on 7 flag football scrimmage they will hold at the end of their camp.
July 21, 22, 23, 24, 5:30-7:15 FEE - $45 Rain date July 26th This is a 4-day football clinic that any Boy or Girl entering grades 3 - 6 learn the fundamentals of the game of football. Jon Vachon and other Youth Football Coaches will conduct the camp This is a non-contact camp where players can learn fundamentals of football and have fun! Players will be divided into groups by grade level and instructed accordingly by our staff or both defense and offense. On the last day of camp, we will hold a 7 on 7 flag football round robin.
HIGH SCHOOL & MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL CAMP July 27th -30th FEE: $50.00 Grades 7-8 5:00-6:30 Grades 9-12 6:30-8:00pm Coach Dave St. Hilaire and members of the High School and Middle School coaching staff will conduct this year’s football clinic. This camp will cover all defensive and offensive positions followed by team concepts that end in a scrimmage. Each player will have the opportunity to improve their skills needed to have a successful football season. Camp will be held on the football practice area.

During this weeklong program, players will spend the early part of their mornings working on various skills and mechanics followed by playing the Cobbossee Colony Golf Course in the afternoon. This program is open to all skill levels! Mike Griswold, Winthrop Grade School PE Teacher will lead this introduction to golf clinic. Items to Bring Each Day: *Golf Clubs, a packed lunch, morning and afternoon snacks, sunscreen, and an umbrella in case of rain). *Players are asked to bring their own set of golf clubs; however, clubs will be available for use should a child not have their own set.

July 20th -23rd 5:30-7:30pm $50.00 Coach John Baehr, the boys high school Soccer coach and the members of the boys and girls high school soccer teams will lead this camp for grades 4,5,6,7 and 8, boys and girls. This is a great week of soccer to improve skills and learn about playing as a team. Using skills and drills to fine tune each camper’s ability and having fun doing it, this camp will have multiple divisions to suite each age group and skill set. In the camps second year we are hoping to get more excitement for soccer and have a great opportunity to prepare for the fall season. 5:30pm to 7:30pm at the High School Soccer Field.

This camp brings outstanding international coaches to our community for a week of skill games to improve any player at any level. A fun exciting week your child will talk about all year. This year the camp is broke into 2 groups for age appropriate play. Camp will be held on the High School football field near the tennis courts.
