education descriptions Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging. If you or someone you know is affected by Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, it’s time to learn the facts. This program provides information on detection, causes and risk factors, stages of the disease, treatment, and much more. Audience: All Dementia Conversations: Driving, Doctor Visits, Legal & Financial Planning Conversations with family members who are showing signs of dementia can be challenging and uncomfortable. The fear or lack of awareness that may accompany these conversations can result in delays that have serious consequences for the entire family. This workshop will offer tips on how to have honest and caring conversations with family members about going to the doctor, when to stop driving, and making legal and financial plans. Audience: Caregivers Effective Communication Strategies Communication is more than just talking and listening – it’s also about sending and receiving messages through attitude, tone of voice, facial expressions and body language. As people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias progress in their journey and the ability to use words is lost, families need new ways to connect. Join us to explore how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s, learn to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia, and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease. Audience: Caregivers Understanding and Responding to Dementia-Related Behavior Behavior is a powerful form of communication and is one of the primary ways for people with dementia to communicate their needs and feelings as the ability to use language is lost. However, some behaviors can present real challenges for caregivers to manage. Join us to learn to decode behavioral messages, identify common behavior triggers, and acquire strategies to help intervene with some of the most common behavioral challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. Audience: Caregivers 6 24/7 Helpline 800-272-3900
Health Conference Highlights the Underrepresentation of Hispanics/ Latinos in Dementia Research Recently, the Alzheimer’s Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Region Chapter held its Seventh Annual Hispanic/ Latino Conference in Spanish. More than 80 participants from the Greater Rochester area attended the event at Monroe Community Hospital. Older Hispanics/Latinos are about one and one-half times more likely than older whites to have Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Medicare payments for Hispanics/Latinos with Alzheimer’s and other dementias are 7 percent higher than those for their white counterparts. Health conditions such as diabetes are suspected risk factors for Alzheimer’s and other dementias among all groups. However, diabetes is more prevalent in the Hispanic community (2017 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures, Alzheimer’s Association). Hector M. González, Ph.D., the keynote speaker at the conference and Associate Professor of Neurosciences at the University of California, San Diego, shared the latest research findings on Alzheimer’s and other dementias in the Hispanic/Latino communities. Dr. González is the Principal Investigator of the Study of Latinos—Investigation of Neurocognitive Aging (SOL-INCA). “Hispanics are underrepresented in Alzheimer’s research. We need to encourage our community members to take part in clinical trials,” said Dr. González. His keynote presentation also emphasized the importance of healthy lifestyles for maintaining brain health. The Alzheimer’s Association offers a range of programs and services in Spanish. If you are a member of the Hispanic/Latino community and have questions or need help, please call 1-800-272-3900 to learn more about our programs available in Spanish for families affected by Alzheimer’s or another dementia. alz.org/rochesterny 7
8 24/7 Helpline 800-272-3900

City of Rochester Recognizes Dr. Lemuel and Gloria Rogers African-American Health Symposium Earlier this year, the Alzheimer’s Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Region Chapter held its Seventh Annual African- American Health Symposium. Named after former members of the Mount Olivet Baptist Church Dr. Lemuel and Gloria Rogers, the symposium brought together more than 120 participants from the Greater Rochester area. Sandra Simon, Affirmative Action and Diversity/Inclusion Officer at the City of Rochester, presented a Proclamation by Mayor Lovely Warren recognizing the Dr. Lemuel and Gloria Rogers African-American Health Symposium’s contribution to the community. Dr. Rogers was one of the first African-American doctors to build and own a medical building in Rochester. Over the course of his 30 years of practice, he delivered more than 5,000 babies in Rochester’s Highland and Saint Mary’s hospitals. The organizers of the 2018 symposium also honored the life of late Judge Roy King, the first African-American to work at the City of Rochester’s Law Department. Judge King was a member of the Alzheimer’s Association's African-American Council. Mount Olivet Baptist Church has been a partner of the Alzheimer’s Association since the founding of its Alzheimer’s Ministry in 2004. In addition to hosting the health symposium annually, members and volunteers of the Alzheimer’s Ministry provide community education and outreach to other faith communities. While older blacks/African Americans are two times more likely than older whites to have Alzheimer’s and other dementias, they are less likely than whites to have a diagnosis of the condition (2017 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures, Alzheimer’s Association). Health conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes are suspected risk factors for Alzheimer’s and other dementias among all groups. But, high blood pressure and diabetes are more prevalent among African Americans. monroe county Support Group Offers Strength to Husband Caring for Wife with Younger-Onset Alzheimer’s Brian Norton’s wife Amy was diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s in early 2013, at the age of 43. For the next five years, Brian provided care for his wife. Every day, he would go to work, come back to have lunch with Amy, and then go back to work. “I would make lunch and we would eat together. But, I could see that Amy felt lonely and needed more help,” Brian said. Eventually, he hired professional caregivers to stay with Amy during the day. “Paying for caregivers became expensive very quickly. It is financially stressful to live with Alzheimer’s,” Brian added. Amy’s abilities in daily living were diminishing every day. “We had to tell her how to eat and then we had to feed her. On the weekends and at night, it was just me and the kids. On Sundays, my mom or sister would drop in so I could go grocery shopping,” Brian said. Shortly after Amy’s diagnosis, Brian joined a younger-onset caregiver support group. “For five years, I attended the support group once a month. Being able to speak with other caregivers and advocate for people who live with Alzheimer’s gave me the strength I needed at home,” Brian said. Amy passed away on March 20, 2018, If you are caring for your at the age of 48. “After she passed, I loved one, consider joining realized I had been under more stress a support group.
