Welcome to the 2015 Ede Clendinnen Shield and National Championships - 29 August - 5 September 2015
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF BADMINTON AUSTRALIA

Foreword

Badminton Australia has, over the past years, raised the profile of the sport by conducting
world class events at home. Australians have been fortunate to have had the opportunity
to watch the best in the world at the annual Superseries in Sydney and will be again able
to do so when we host the Sudirman Cup on the Gold Coast in 2017---the first time this
Event has been in the Southern Hemisphere. Our goal at Badminton Australia is, by
viewing the sport and the skill of the players, enthuse more people to become involved,
either as a participant or volunteer and inspire those already competing to strive for the
top. It is therefore extremely disappointing to see that our highest internal level of
competition for State teams has, this year, received diminished support from players and
States and caused the event's future to be in jeopardy. The lack of attendance at this
year's Clendinnen Shield and Australian Closed Championships is very sad and worrying
for all, particularly following the attention given to the event last year with the “Save the
Shield” social media campaign which occurred when a suggested change of format was
mooted. It is also very difficult for hosts to meet the expectations of sponsors and
competitors with a smaller attendance. Indeed the onus is on us all to make a conscious
decision to do better in 2016 when Victoria hosts the Event in the new timeslot of
February. A similar attendance to this year will raise real questions around the viability of
the Event so it is essential that all Members work extremely hard to select a team. I am
confident all will do so.

Having said that I congratulate those who have committed to the event and I am confident
you will have an enjoyable and productive visit to Hobart. The Southern Tasmanian
Badminton Association has a long and successful history of conducting events for
Badminton Australia. I am sure this will be no exception as the hardworking Committee
has made every effort to guarantee a top class event despite the lack of entries.
Volunteers are the backbone of any organisation, and the dedicated group who work
tirelessly to provide opportunities for competition are to be congratulated. We appreciate
the time and effort you give willingly to this event and acknowledge your efforts.

On behalf of the Badminton Australia Board, Matthew Gillie, Andrew Greenway, Kam Joe,
Kim Low, Loke Poh Wong and CEO Paul Brettell, I wish to thank all visitors, players,
officials, sponsors and fans for supporting this Event and wish all participants much
success. I am confident you will have a memorable experience during your visit to
Hobart..

Thank You,

Geraldine Brown
President. Badminton Australia

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE TASMANIAN
  BADMINTON ASSOCIATION INC

                 Tasmanian Badminton Association Inc
                                                  AFFILIATED WITH BADMINTON AUSTRALIA
                                                                  ABN 17 336 304 395

On behalf of the TBA I would like to welcome all players, officials and supporters of the five
teams representing four states to the 2015 Li-Ning Ede-Clendinnen Shield and Closed
Individual Championships being played in Hobart.

These annual carnivals are a major part of the badminton calendar in Australia where
some lifelong friendships are made and rivalries continued. This will be the last carnival to
be held at this time of the year with the 2016 carnival to be held at the end of February in
Melbourne.

For those who have ambition to go further in the game - this is your chance to impress
selectors with the 2016 Olympics and the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast
as your aim.

I trust that you enjoy the competition and our hospitality in the coming week and are able
to take home fond memories of this carnival.

I am sure that Robert and his committee will do all they can to make sure that you have a
good week.

I must acknowledge the sponsorship received from Li-Ning, Events Tasmania, the Division
of Sport and Recreation and Bass and Equitable Personal Banking.

Welcome to the 2015 Ede Clendinnen Shield and National Championships - 29 August - 5 September 2015
MESSAGE FROM THE LORD MAYOR OF HOBART,
    COUNCILLOR SUE HICKEY

I would like to extend a warm welcome to the players competing in the 2015 Australian Senior
Badminton Championships and the Ede Clendinnen Australian Teams Championships to be held
at the Harry Thomson Centre from 29 August to 5 September 2015. A national competition of
this calibre is well placed in Hobart as Badminton is an ancient game reported to have
originated more than 2000 years ago and Hobart has a proud and distinguished history of
being the 2nd oldest city in Australia. What can I say ... we are a perfect match with a great
appreciation for history and culture! I certainly hope that you find time to incorporate some
sightseeing into your program of activities. There is so much to see and do in Hobart and it
surrounds. Discovering the many activities and beautiful lifestyle of Tasmania is a journey that
everyone must experience at some stage in their lives.

I am sure many of your players would appreciate Tasmania's thriving agriculture, aquaculture
and artisan industries where we grow and develop the finest produce in an environment that
has clear and pristine waters and the cleanest air. A visit to Hobart would not be complete
without sampling the many delicacies that are on offer at our very popular Salamanca
Markets, restaurants, patisseries and produce available fresh from the farmer's gate.

Hobart has a great number of heritage buildings dating back to 1808-1810 and is linked to a
fabulous maritime history and is Australia's gateway to the Antarctic. Our exciting history
extends to the Maritime Museum, the old Campbell Street Gaol and Female Factory sites
with their fascinating history, the fabulous Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens and of course
the superb views from the top of Mount Wellington and so much more. In recent years the
City has blossomed into a culture Capital. Our vibrancy continues with the world renown
Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), the very special Tasmanian Museum and Art
Gallery, the walking trails and bike tracks, the many antique shops and art & craft galleries
across the City and the beautiful old Theatre Royal.

So please indulge yourselves and take a memorable journey of Hobart and the State of
Tasmania. I promise you, you will not be disappointed.

Alderman Sue Hickey LORD MAYOR
OF HOBART

EDE CLENDINNEN SHIELD - HISTORY

The Ede Clendinnen teams event is Australia’s senior event. It is usually hosted in late
August / early September each year, has a maximum of eight State/Territory Teams. This
interstate teams competition is followed by an individual tournament.

It has a significant history. Reginald Ede Clendinnen, with the support of Victorians Harold
Wray and Alf Lennard, decided to start an official interstate series in 1935, the year the
Australian Badminton Association was formed (previously there had been a series of
interstate competitions from 1929 – 1934). Clendinnen donated the shield for the teams
competition, with the three states of Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia contesting the
event. The competition has continued till today with only a short break from 1940 – 1946.

When the original shield was completely filled with the winners names, the Hon. Roy Ward
donated a second shield perpetuating the name “Clendinnen”. The original shield hangs
in the headquarters of the Badminton Association of Western Australia.

Clendinnen was a significant person in Australian Badminton. He was born in New
Zealand, was Badminton Tasmania President in 1930 and 1931 and in 1933 he became a
life member of the Tasmanian Badminton Association. Clendinnen was also the founding
President of the Australian Badminton Association in 1935.

Cliff Cutt Memorial Trophy
At the end of each Clendinnen Carnival, the Cliff Cutt Memorial trophy is presented. This
trophy is awarded to the player of a State/Territory team who exhibits the highest
standards sportsmanship, personality, court demeanor, playing ability and appearance
throughout the tournament.

MAJOR SPONSORS

Roaring 40s Kayaking

Mark and Jenny Grundy own and operate award-winning Roaring 40°s Kayaking in
Tasmania and are excited to again be part of Australian Badminton by sponsoring the
2015 Australian Ladies Doubles title.
Prior to their kayaking careers they were state and national badminton players, with 19
Ede Clendinnen Shield representations and 9 Australian Junior Carnivals between them.
Mark represented both Tasmania and South Australia while Jenny first represented
Queensland prior to moving to South Australia and representing Australia at the Uber Cup.
Jenny has a strong association with the Australian Ladies Doubles event, having been
runner up in this event 3 times and having won two Australian Under 21 Ladies Doubles
titles.
After finishing playing badminton their interests moved to outdoor adventures. Kayaking
was one of their favourites and has led them to running their own successful kayaking
business. Mark is a qualified sea kayak and white water kayak instructor (years of
coaching badminton certainly helped) and spends most of his summers guiding kayaking
tours in Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area (and his winters having fun white
water kayaking in Tasmania’s snow melt rivers!.

Roaring 40°s Kayaking won the 2014 Tasmanian Adventure Tourism Business and offers
premium sea-kayaking eco-tours into spectacular Bathurst Harbour and Port Davey in
Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area, as well as shorter tours in the stunning
waterways surrounding Hobart.
One of their most popular short tours is the 2.5 hour Hobart City Kayak giving a different
perspective on Hobart’s vibrant waterfront. Weave among the yachts, tall ships, fishing
boats and cruise ships of this beautiful harbour, and enjoying a floating snack of fish and
chips delivered directly to your kayak.
The Hobart City Kayak tour operates all year, so if you are visiting Hobart for the Ede
Clendinnen Shield, it is a great way to learn about Hobart’s history while enjoying a gentle
paddle.

B&E – a major sponsor of the Senior National Championships
B&E began as a publicly-funded Building Society in Launceston (Tas) in 1870. It
amalgamated with the Bass Building Society in 1988, changing its name finally to B&E in
                                             17
2001. It remains one of Tasmania’s last locally-owned financial institutions and has
broadened its operations to now include personal loans, overdrafts, commercial loans and
regular banking transactions.
