Weekly Update - January 28, 2022 Dear Community Partner, As the chief public health strategist for the Greater Nashua Public Health Region (GNPHR), the Nashua Division of Public Health and Community Services (DPHCS) prepares weekly updates to inform our community on matters related to the health and safety of our community. The Greater Nashua Public Health Region (GNHPR) includes the towns and cities of Amherst, Brookline, Hollis, Hudson, Litchfield, Lyndeborough, Mason, Merrimack, Milford, Mont Vernon, Nashua, Pelham, and Wilton. COVID-19 Data Update Community level transmission is determined by two metrics established in conjunction with the State of New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). When the number of new cases per 100k over 14 days is less than 50 OR the percent positivity rate is below 5%, a community is designated as "GREEN" or minimal. When cases exceed 50 per 100k OR the percent positivity rate is between 5% to 10%, a community is designated as "YELLOW" or moderate. When a community exceeds the highest threshold (>100 cases per 100k OR >10% positivity rate), a community is designated as "RED" or substantial. Currently, the city of Nashua is experiencing SUBSTANTIAL community level transmission. Definitions Active Case A case that is currently sick or in isolation due to COVID-19. New Infections per 100k Number of new cases within 14 days standardized by population size to compare across groups. This shows how quickly disease is occurring in the community or the incidence of disease. 7-Day Total Test Positivity Rate Number of PCR and Antigen tests that are positive compared to the number of PCR and Antigen tests that are negative over the past 7 days. A rising positivity rate indicates a rising number of infections in the community. Fully Vaccinated Percent of residents fully vaccinated. Full vaccination occurs 2 weeks after the second dose in a 2- dose series or 2 weeks after a single- dose vaccine. Up-to-date on COVID-19 Vaccination Individuals who have received a booster vaccination 5 months after completing their primary series of
Pfizer or Moderna or 2 months after the single dose of Janssen (J&J). Stalking Awareness Month January 2022 marks the eighteenth annual National Stalking Awareness Month (NSAM), an annual call to action to recognize and
respond to the serious crime of stalking. Though millions of men and women are stalked every year in the United States, the crime of stalking is often misunderstood, minimized and/or ignored. Stalking is a pattern of behavior directed at a specific person that causes fear for their safety and often causes severe emotional distress. Stalkers use a variety of tactics, including (but not limited to): Unwanted contact including phone calls, texts, and contact via social media Unwanted gifts Showing up/approaching an individual or their family/friends Monitoring or following Property damage Threats Stalking is a terrifying and psychologically harmful crime and is a predictor of serious violence. The majority of stalking victims are stalked by someone they know. Many victims are stalked by a current or former intimate partner (such as a husband or boyfriend) or by a friend. We all have a role to play in identifying stalking and supporting victims and survivors. Learn more about stalking and how you can help stop it at https://www.stalkingawareness.org. Snow Shovel Safety Winter storms happen often in New England. Though we may be used to having to go out and shovel, make sure to follow these safety tips the next time it snows so you can stay safe and avoid injury or a possible heart attack. Snow Shovel Safety Tips Do not shovel after eating or while smoking Take it slow and stretch out before you begin Shovel only fresh, powdery snow; it's lighter Push the snow rather than lifting it If you do lift it, use a small shovel or only partially fill the shovel Lift with your legs, not your back Do not work to the point of exhaustion Know the signs of a heart attack, and stop immediately and call 911 if you're experiencing any of them; every minute counts (Source: National Safety Council) EQUITY CORNER: Aging in Place: Black Perspectives Event Aging in place refers to the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level, and this session centers the perspectives of senior people of African descent in their own words. In a roundtable session, individuals from several areas including Black history, arts, educational, and activist organizations will share stories of how they’ve made a place called home in New England and how they've navigated living in the region including the hopes, challenges and dreams they have for themselves and future generations. Their stories help interweave longer histories of regional, labor, and seasonal migration, the work of maintaining family connections and political presence as citizens, and what it takes to define themselves and the “Black community.”
The Aging in Place: Black Perspectives virtual event will take place on February 8th, 3:30-5:00PM. Our very own DPHCS Director Bobbie Bagley will be the event moderator. Deepak Chopra Mind Body Zone: Living Outside the Box This week I really enjoyed listening to Deepak Chopra’s, Mind Body Zone – Living Outside The Box, which is a series of conversations with individuals sharing their stories of inspiration, profound findings about themselves and how they relate to the connection of the mind and body zone. Each conversation is then followed by an interactive time of meditation and peaceful reflection on the conversation that takes the listener to a deeper place of consciousness in their own understanding of being. There are 25 conversations on self- acceptance, vulnerability, overcoming trauma, and being connected to self, community, and the planet. As Jessamyn Stanley shares, allowing our spirits to expand and being brought to a space of compassion and love over fear is important. This was so welcoming to my spirit especially in this time when there has been so much conflict and incivility in our nation. I related to Gabor Mate sharing on the reality that there will be pain and suffering in this life, but that we can move past the pain and learn. I connected with Layla Saad, who talks about the importance of healing from the inside and I totally agree that awareness is healing and we are certainly at a place where healing is needed. This was such a timely listen for me, especially in light of Holocaust Remembrance Day and the activities that were highlighted this month on the Civil Rights movement and Martin Luther King, Jr. Living Outside the Box was a beautiful gift of self-care indulgence for me. Enjoy! Or as Deepak says “Namaste”. Check out the podcast and let us know what you think!
