the place to be for business. Foreword Dear readers, The forewords to our annual reports have been quite similar for a few years now – and we are very happy about that. This is because the Berlin economy continues to expand without interruption. In 2015 it not only saw economic growth rise and unemployment Berlin: High in Demand. fall, but also achieved another very important claim to fame: Berlin is the Number 1 startup city in Europe. In no other city have investors shown as much confidence and provided as much capital to young entrepreneurs. In the past year, Berlin passed London to reach the top spot, with investments totaling a solid EUR 1.4 billion in the first half of 2015 – a record! Our numbers as a business development agency are also breaking records: In our strongest year since the beginning of Berlin Partner, we can now report that we have supported companies in 289 projects, created 6,650 jobs and invested roughly EUR 723 million in Berlin. What is driving this economic boom? It is a mixture of established businesses, science and the startup scene. People's openness and creativity has created the lively startup scene in Berlin – a metropolis that never gets old, constantly reinvents itself and gives everyone space to test out ideas. Science, established businesses and young creative entrepreneurs are constantly finding new ways to collaborate on the development of products and technologies for the future. This effective mixture is like a magnet for in- ternational companies. In 2015 well-known brands and global corporations also chose Berlin for the development of ground-breaking innovations. This is how we are expan- ding Berlin into a testing laboratory for the future issues of a growing global metropolis step by step. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the Berlin government for the good collaboration in 2015, in particular the Senate Chancellery and the Senate Department for Economics, Technology and Research, and also to our service partners, the district offices and our private shareholders and Berlin partners that are so committed to our city. We look forward to 2016 and are optimistic that we will be able to announce more collective success in next year's report. Kind regards, Your Your Dr. Stefan Franzke Andrea Joras Management Spokesperson Managing Director 2 3

The best of two worlds A lot of innovation in Berlin occurs at various interfaces – between clusters and sectors BarCamp Health-IT or between the established economy and science and the creative entrepreneurial scene. Berlin Partner's task is to network these worlds – and there were over 100 formats for BarCamp Health-IT took place at the conhIT, Europe's leading trade fair for health IT, and this in 2015. focused on "KIS, Big Data, mHealth, Apps & Co". The cross-cluster event was organized together with the Cluster ICT, Media and Creative Industries and the Health Capital clus- ter. Each participant presented their project in a short pitch at the interactive workshop. In the subsequent sessions, there was space for detailed presentations, discussions and exchange. Finally, of the 90 participants, 13 offered content sessions. Smart matching for a smart city During Metropolitan Solutions in May, international companies, research facilities and startups with a smart city and urban-tech backgrounds were brought together. Among others, a startup delegation was invited from New York and Tel Aviv in order to introduce the Berlin smart city eco-system. Berlin's mayor Michael Müller visited the startup area of the joint booth at the trade fair. This subject will be addressed in greater depth this year – for example, with a Smart City Hackathon organized by Berlin Partner and ending at the 2016 Metropolitan Solutions. eMO hosts investor dinner Electromobility is as much a part of Berlin as the diverse startup world.
